Worker's Compensation for my Girlfriend ?

Hey guys, I was just on the phone with my insurance agent and she asked me if anyone was going to be working with me....I told her my gf....She said "How much are you going to pay her ?" Well, we didn't think anything of it....We have been dating for about 6 years....We live together....At this point our money and finances have blended together....We were just going to work, and make money...Really didn't think anything else of it... The insurance lady said we could get in trouble if I don't pay her, and pay worker's compensation... I am registered as an LLC....... What do I have to do here ? thanks, Schmelly

As I see it, you have three options: 1) buy workers comp for her 2) give her an ownership share (double check NH law, that might not help you much) 3) marry that girl

I agree with stubby. If you are not going to pay her you have to make her a member of the LLC but I don't think marrying her will get you out of paying her unless she is part owner.

Check your state, but in Florida workers comp is required ONLY when you have over a certain number of non-owners working for you. I think the number is 3 here.

Schmelly What do I have to do here ? thanks, Schmelly I'm a huge fan of paying attorneys and CPA's to get the right answers to questions for which the wrong answers are expensive, especially when it comes to tax compliance.

I think when I have my own place, I would pay any and all who work and any related taxes/fees. I would also pay myself an hourly wage or salary. I would want to know if the business was succeeding or not, and billing all services appropriately would help me determine that.
