The scale of this thing is amazing. Each of its four clock faces is over 166 feet in diameter. Here it is in situ: (Wonder what they are building on the other side of the "Grand Mosque"?)

For people like myself, who had no idea of the name of this building or where it is, it is the Abraj Al-Bait Towers, also known as the Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower, is a building complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It took some digging to find it, since if you Google "World's largest new building", the new Dubai tower comes up, which is actually the World's tallest new building.

chewingthefat Where is it? Sorry. I thought most would recognize the "Grand Mosque" in Mecca which is itself an immense structure that is now absolutely dwarfed by this megalith. - Compare its clock faces at 20,000 sq. ft. to Big Ben's 415 sq. ft.
- The height of the tower is 200 feet higher than the Freedon Tower's projected 1,776 feet.
- The square footage is double that of the twin towers (combined) of the late WTC.
The prime contractor for this complex was the Saudi Bin Laden Group.

mayor al Where's the TRUMP logo ? Even Trump doesn't think THAT big! BTW: can you imagine a structure that HUGE being allowed to be built next to e.g., St. Peter's or the U.S. Capitol? Talk about cultural differences!

If, like me, you are fascinated by skyscrapers you will love this site: http://www.emporis.com/buildings For the true geek, it gives pictures, stats, info, etc. on every building in the world higher than 165'. Ever wonder, e.g., if "The Bat" in Nashville is taller than the Othon Palace Hotel on Copacabana Beach, R.J.? Your answer is easily found on Emporis. What cost more to build, the new Wynn hotel in Vegas or the new Children's Hospital in Houston?

People suggesting tit-for-tat retribution are showing themselves to be no better than the terrorists who destroyed the World Trade Center. Cheers, john
