Was the gombay in Nags Head? The Fery ride to Ocrakoke is always very windy,Ive have had waves spraying over my truck at times. And Howards Pub is always the first stop on my way up there.

Yes, it's kind of tucked back off the beach road. We missed it at first last year, but that was due to the incredibly bad weather more than anything else.
As for the ferry ride, that was cool. We took it on a windy, but warm and sunny morning. I thought it was a remarkably smooth passage despite the wind. Even my dad didn't mind it, and he's been know to get seasick on a houseboat that was still in it's slip.

I agree, ferry ride was smooth, despite the wind.
Wish more places were like Howard's Pub up north.
Best burger I have had in a while.
Even bought the t-shirt.

you guys should check out the shirts at Basnight's Lone Cedar. He has several but we really like the traditional one which has his restuarant logo on the back...... worth the price when you see it. We don't like the "Crab" t-shirts at all.

I think that living in the center of the state of North Carolina and eating barbecue for 50+ years has made be tired of barbecue. Any time a school has a fund raiser , they sell barbecue. I've tried it from all parts of the state and if I have a choice of meats, I'll choose something else besides barbecue.

Well, I still want to know:

Where on OBX is Lone Cedar?

I don't recall that one from my trip (during which we visited everything from Duck/Corolla to Ocracoke) a couple years back. Wish I had known about the place in Frisco, we were based in Avon and Frisco is not too far off.

Sorry about that..... when you come into the edge on Manteo on the new bridge, you will continue on towards Nags Head. When you go over the high bridge at the causeway, it will be about a half a mile or so on your right side. you can't miss it as it has been renovated and painted a light beige as well. Great food but get there early as it fills up quickly.

We just got back from a trip throuh eastern North Carolina in April. The absolute worst barbecue we have ever had was at Shaw's Barbecue House in Williamston. The pulled pork was salty in the extreme! I couldn't eat it. My husband thought there must have been a salt accident in the kitchen. The cornbread sticks were also dreadful--hard and stale. Does anyone know if this is the way it always is served? I have no idea how the place got into Roadfood based on our experience.

Some bad NC bbq I've had...and many people swear by it...Smithfield's. Have eaten at two different ones and both times very unhappy. Jackson's Big Oak BBQ in Wilmington is my favorite around here. None beat the ones we have in the backyard though, even though we're talking about roadfood here, there's nothing like the satisfaction of digging into a hog you and your friends cooked all night long...:)

I was in Mooresville this weekend and we had some Q at Lancaster's and it was just . . . meh. The place seems to be more ambience than food--very NASCAR-heavy. The fried chicken was nasty. I enjoyed the mayo slaw and hush puppies more than anything else. Service was very good.

Just curious, does "NASCAR heavy" attribute to the food being less desirable? If that's the case I know to stay away from any restaurants in Daytona this weekend.

NASCAR heavy usually means that there is pictures of NASCAR drivers hanging on the walls and pendants and other NASCAR items are all over the place-but the food is usually good- sometimes a race is playing on large screens, or over the intercom system.

Actual *car hoods*. That's NASCAR-heavy. This place may have even been decent for typical sports bar food, but I was hankering for BBQ, and it just wasn't that good.

Thinking about going down to the coast once the weather breaks to check out the Quarterdeck again as well the good Senator's Lone Cedar Cafe.
