Worst recipes ever created? Wed, 03/31/04 11:24 PM (permalink)
I'm not talking about a particular food that one might not like. I'm talking about bad recipes created, most likely in a contest sponsored by a company that requires the use of a product in said recipe.

Ex: Cooking is not a strong point on my mom's side of the family. One afternoon we were having a get-together at our house. God bless my aunt, who proudly unveiled the new dip she'd read about--

-A block of cream cheese topped by canned salsa!

OK- whoever had submitted that recipe to the magazine must've been pulling someone's leg. But the fact that the recipe was disseminated and that OTHER PEOPLE actually went out and 'made' it is incredible!

Anyone else have unbelievable recipe stories?

    Kittypaw,
Amazing you'd create this thread right now. Today's newspaper (Atlanta, I think, but maybe Athens) ran a story on a recipe in Southern Living Magazine. In that recipe, it directs the cook to put shortening in water and boil the mixture. Instant kitchen fire, Bubba! It was a mistake, but thusfar three people have, however puzzledly, followed the directions and been forced to a) use their handy fire extinguisher (twice) or b) call the fire department (once). Fortunately no major damage resulted, but anyone who uses shortening with water ought to know not to boil it, wouldn't you think? Gracious. Even I know that much.

    P. S. My favorite idiotic recipe is to take canned cling peach halves, bread them, deep fry them until they're crispy-crunchy, put them on a towel to cool, then put a dollop of cold beef gravy in the middle. Yummyphonic! - I think I created that when I was 10 or 11.

Those green meatballs/ vienna sausages you see on buffets. I believe the sauce is made with mustard and grape jelly.

I don't know what's scarier, the ingredients or the fact that I know people who love the stuff.

Oh yeah, I forgot one - Any recipe that calls for multi-colored miniature marshmallows.

The only way to eat marshmallows, in my opinion, is to roast them over an open campfire with a stick.

White Castle sponsers a contest each year to find the best recipe that utilizes ten sliders. The winner gets a free crave case (30 white castles) every week for a year. Things like stuffings and various casseroles usually win. They pass out the top ten each year in a free booklet. I am guessing that somewhere in this contest is the worst recipe ever created.

Yeah, I remember seeing one of those contest winners on there website. It was a lime jello mold with whole sliders suspended within the jello.

Jello and hamburgers in one dish? Eeewww!!!!
Is there cheese on said hamburgers? Bun and condiments,
              or just the meat itself?

              Oh gosh, I'm feeling ill...

A popular tuna casserole that contains potato chips; I don't think there are any noodles in it. My mother-in-law uses that recipe; my husband grew up on it. Maybe some of you are familiar with it.

Speaking of tuna, one of the worse recipes that I know is one that I refer to as 3 CANS ON A BISCUIT. It consists of a can of sweet peas and a can of tuna stirred into a can of cream of mushroom soup and served over biscuits............now to me, that is ugly.

The late Larry Goldberg, founder of Goldberg's Pizza in New York, said he once made a peanut butter and jelly pizza. I don't know if I believe that, but it has to be one of the worst-sounding recipe ideas ever.

Baskin Robbins used to make licorice ice cream! This stuff looked like roofing tar; never knew anyone to try it. Anise is a great spice for some things, but not ice cream, imho.

CORN ICE CREAM. Found in a little dairy in IOWA in 1978.

PB&J pizza is served at Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel... on the children's table and it is very very good.

block of cream cheese pour bottled cocktail sauce over and drain canned shrimp and pour over with a squeeze of lemon. Very good with crackers. Easy and quick.

They had that when I worked there! And man, it was GROSS. But we had one little guy, about five years old that would come in and ask for a kid's size scoop of it, because that's all he could afford. So I'd give as much as would fit in the cup, just to get rid of it.

You were a deep-frying prodigy! The beef gravy--how did you ever think of that?

I wish I had grown up frying chicken and other things. I am scared of the hot oil. (We did Shake and Bake, which I like a lot.)

They had that when I worked there! And man, it was GROSS. But we had one little guy, about five years old that would come in and ask for a kid's size scoop of it, because that's all he could afford. So I'd give as much as would fit in the cup, just to get rid of it.

Aw--what a good heart you have!

I heard rumors from someone who worked at Baskin Robbins that all the scraps from the bottom of the almost-empty ice-cream buckets were combined into one, producing the delicious "Treasure Island" flavor.

Actually, that doesn't sound half bad!!!

I was at a fancy restaurant the other night and had tomato sorbet and it was delish. Corn ice cream isn't too far of a jump from that...

At the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta I ran into a similar concoction. It was called "tiger stripe" ice cream. It was black licorice and orange flavored. I passed that one up!

East of Chicago Pizza is a chain here in Ohio and a few other states and they have a PB&J pizza. I have not had it but if it's anything like the rest of their pizza it has to be terrible.
