Yahoo's 100 Movies to See Before You Die

Checked out this list and was shocked to discover I'd seen 95 out of the 100 films missing mostly some Asian films of the last decade. i hope some good samaritan will post a link. The only notable lack in the 100 films is its failure to include Buster Keaton's "The General", Chaplin's "The Gold Rush", Hitchcock's "North By Northwest", Huston"s "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" and Sirk's "Written on the Wind" i love lists like this

Well I got to "D" and quit when I realized I had missed 1/2 and therefore only seen 1/2. That Crouching Dragon movie was BORING---so I'm out of here. Gotta go see what's on the Pre-1945 Channel.

I watched 86. Of the ones I hadn't seen, well, they may stay that way because I saw nothing I thought would be a must see.

Wow...I only got about halfway through the list before deciding that their taste in movies and mine are from such vastly different places that there was no point in continuing. Shoot...there were probably a dozen I've never even heard of, as well as several that the previews didn't even look interesting to me.

I used to write about movies a lot so a lot of the movies on the list i saw in college. Plus Portland has some video stores that specialize in old or foreign movies that has made it relatively easy to catch obscure movies. Curiously in the Yahoo 100 best movies since 1990 I've seen only 40 of the 100.

Just for the fun of it I jotted down a few of my favorites and then went back to the list--------------I'm not a movie expert, but I know a good movie when I see one---- Here is a list that I made in 1 minute---and see how many missed the cut-- The Train------to me the best WW2 movie----not on list Charade-------Cary Grant with Audrey Hepburn-----no Notorious-----Cary with Ingrid, a Hitchcock winner----no Patton---------are they crazy, Academy Award winner------no A Bridge Too Far-----great WW2 film--------no Midway-------they don't like WW2-----------no Red River She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Quiet Man----last three just jumped into my mind and I'll bet they are not there either---------no John Wayne it seems. Gotta go back and look for the Miracle Worker that has to be there. I guess I won't look any further --- Yahoo gets a no star rating for this list as far as i am concerned.

84. The only 2 from the 16 I haven't seen that might surprise people are The Graduate and The Usual Suspects. Of the 14 remaining, there are the kung fu movies, which do nothing for me, and some foreign films that passed me by when I was younger and now I don't care about.

Mosca, We probably saw the same since I had two more at 86 and did see the Graduate and The Usual Suspects. Can you remember where you first saw a movie? The Graduate was in downtown Cincinnati as was Blow Up. I saw Bonnie and Clyde at the Lafayette Drive-in in Indianapolis. Jaws in Saginaw, MI. Casablanca as the last movie ever shown at the St. Louis Park, MN theater ca. 1977 as well as Star Wars in that same theater. Raging Bull on a cable TV channel the first time I ever watched cable TV at my parents' home in Lighthouse Point, FL. I finally saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail earlier this year as a DVD rental. I actually saw To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time just recently on Turner Classic Movies. TCM was the source of my viewing for many of those movies. I may be able to recollect more but that is off the top of my head.

I saw a lot of the foreign ones in college The Bicycle Thief, Breathless, Blow Up, Rashomon, the Bergman stuff. As a matter of fact, I saw lots of these in college, either in film classes (I minored in film studies), or on film nights at the Student Union. I remember my grandmother taking all 6 of us kids, plus my parents, to see Lawrence of Arabia, in the theater, in freakin' Super Panavision 70, in 1962. There was an intermission, and you could get programs back then, big things with thick glossy pages, like a new car brochure. Even at 8 years old, I knew I was watching something amazing. I remember the one scene, with them walking back over the desert, and the vision of the sand filled my eyes from end to end. David freakin' Lean. I saw Apocalypse Now at The Stanley in Pittsburgh. I saw The Exorcist at The Woodlands Drive-In, in Jefferson PA. I probably saw some of the others there, too. I did see quite a few on HBO.

It might surprise people that I have not yet seen "THe Matrix" or "Die Hard". i've put library holds on the Asian ones I have not seen and will report back. Much of my list was at purdue and and a very good film studies course at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Professor Ken Nollley, i am forever grateful. Ancient mariner, I was surprised by the absence of Hawks' "Rio Bravo". I think they had 3 Hitchcock movies on the list and were reluctant to include "North By Northwest" and "Notorious" for that reason. Thanks for the wonderful feedback to all.

the ancient mariner Felis the Cat----I'm with you, or your with me I figure we saved a lot of money missing a lot of duds that someone else liked. Exactly. Well, I finally reached the end of the internet, so I started counting. I've seen 41 of them. About 1/3 of those I was less than impressed by, and only five have I watched more than once on purpose (Blazing Saddles, Casablanca, Snow White, Spinal Tap and the Wizard of Oz). I've also never heard of 28 of them. Of the remaining 31, 25 are so uninteresting to me that I probably would turn the TV off and read a book instead should they happen to be running.

How come Caddy Shack didn't make the list? Who is in charge here ? I would like to lodge a complaint. Vince M------reaching 82 won't help a bit---I did and kept going without ever having seen 50% or almost 1/2 of the movies. Having young people make lists is a waste of time they just haven't lived long enough to appreciate the old stuff that was so good. Funny thing---I see a movie listed that I loved as a young man and get myself ready for a big night----take my nap, get out my hearing aid and my good glasses----adjust the sound level ----blow up the cushions of my favorite chair ----and after about 15 minutes shut the damn thing off and wonder why I ever thought it was great. Time wounds all heels.

Saw the Chinese film "Raise the Red Lantern" from 1992 which is on the list. A strikingly beautiful visual film, it is the story of a young woman whose family poverty compels her to become the 4th concubine of a chinese war lord. The four women compete for the favor of the man and the woman who wins his nightly favor has lanterns lit in her section of the house and gets to choose the next day's dinner menu. The film details the petty intrigues, the male domination of life, and life in the house. The actress who played the 4th concubine and the actress who played the third concubine are both beautiful and the film itself is stunning. The lanterns are a powerful visual symbol. almost a character in the movie. Glad I saw it and it was better than "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

I'm pretty amazed at the diversity on that list. But they could make room by dropping a few of them. Blue Velvet? Ugg, entirely forgetable waste of film.

Blue Velvet is one of the worst.------The people who put this list together should be investigated. A congressional investigation at the very least. Those bozos in Washington would love it----

Saw a couple of the more obscure films on the list. "Princess Mononke" was an example of Japanese anime that was actually pretty good. A film about a struggle between humans, forest spirits, and demons, the animation was first rate. my son liked it a bit more than i did but it wasn't a waste of time and it broadened my horizons. Sam had seen some of the directors work on the Cartoon Channel and i will watch some of his other DVD's. "The World of Apu" was the last of a trilogy by Indian director Satyajit Ray, the first indian director to find commercial and artistic success in the west. it is the story of the life of an impoverished Brahmin living his life in Calcutta. Ray is a great visual stylist and the film is beautiful. it is glacial in its pace and while i loved it, trudy did not. it interested me enough to see the first two films in the trilogy which I also liked.

I just saw the Chinese film "In the Mood For Love" and was blown away. Director Wong Kar-Lei directed an atmospheric film about a a man and woman drawn together when they discover their spouses are having an affair( the couples live next door to each other in a Hong Kong rooming house in 1962). The couple meet in a noodle house at first, are drawn together as they try to understand why the affair occurred but are determined not to have a sexual affair. The film is atmospheric, the score eclectic(everything from Chinese opera to Nat King Cole singing in Spanish) and I was captivated. I plan to check out more of this director's work.
