Yankee Fans and Haters

A guy died today who was a story all by himself. Ryne Duran --- he of the 100 MPH fastball and big thick glasses. Ryne was a great big guy who had a real big fastball. He would enter the game in the late innings and stride to the mound like Superman. Superman with very bad eyesight. As the first batter to face him waited in the on deck circle Ryne would take his stretch and throw a 100-mph fast ball high and inside and over the catchers outstretched mitt. The batter could imagine that that ball went right where his head would be if he were in the box. He would automatically bless himself, try to stop shaking and slowly walk to the batter's box. Ryne was a very effective pitcher for a number of years.

A great example of an athlete who overcame his personal demons to become a far greater success off the field than on. I'm not 100% sure as this was before my time here, but I believe in the 1980s he had a connection to the Stoughton community, possibly the hospital, as an alcohol counselor/educator. The local paper will probably have something about him next week. A number of years ago we refinanced our house and the loan officer was a woman around 30 who had the last name Duren. I asked her about it once and she told me that her husband was related to Ryne Duren, although I can't remember exactly how. Brad

He was a Yankee. Naturally I had to hate him. But he was something else alright.

When I saw the title to this thread, I thought I'd get to say what I think of the Yankees, but I digress.

I am hanging in Penn Station waiting for my train out of this nest of baseball losers. As I grabbed a slice of so-so station pizza, saw a kid wearing a Yankees "World Champions" jacket. The temptation arrose to mock him: Not this year, SUCKAHHHH! But I didn't bother--not worth the effort.

It may very well be another 56 years before you can rub a Giants win in anyone's face!

Casey Stengal speaking of Duran's fast ball---i If you get hit with his fast ball you will be talked of in the past tense. Mike in poor little Rhode Island---I am a Yankee hater also, so I give you permission to vent all you want. Could you be, by chance, a Rex Sox fan? No I didn't think so.

Rhode Island may be poor---but I was just reading that 3 of the states who got new governors are flat broke---California, New York and Illinois. The new regime promises to straighten out the mess lest behind. It seems to me I've heard that song before.

He's doing away with E-verify here. So now we have a liberal genaral assembly, senate and gov. Gotta go pack

Rhode Island can secede---sue Mass and Conn for more territory that once was part of the sacred hunting grounds of the Native Americans who came here from Asia. Open up a few casino's to bring in the big bucks. Turn Newport's mansions into low-income apartment buildings. Drill for oil in Narragansett Harbor. ------------------And still be the smallest of the 48. What's that there are 50 now.

I remember when I was a little kid and had the very same card when he was with the Angels. An older kid told me that he was blind. I put it up with my other special cards thinking that it had some special value.

Lee-----did I read the pappers correctly today? Did the Yankees sign an old decrepit guy named Jones to play centerfield. If he bats 240 it will be great. Michael Hoffman can cover as much ground. Gap triples will be the downfall of the 2011 season. Singles into triples---oy vey.

Carl Pavano turned down a 10 million dollar Yankee offer to play for the Minnesota Twins at $8 million this year. Wonders never cease.

Carl Pavano know money isn't everything but it beats the hell out of whatever is in second place. Michael Hoffman---I'll bet that with your new KEDS you could outrun any cop in CT.

For the past couple of years the only times Jones has been above 240 is when he's stepped on the scale, although he did get in pretty good condition last year. He got off to a good start with the White Sox and for awhile it looked like he might've resurrected his career, but from about June on he really struggled. Davydd, I'm sure Pavano remembers his previous time with the Yankees all too well and an extra $2mil per year wasn't nearly enough to risk a rerun. Brad

And while I can't say about all the cops in Connecticut, there was a time when I could outrun most of the ones in New Haven, and did with quite a few of them, especially the ones in the Westville precinct.

There's not enough money in the universe to get me to play for the Yankees -- even if I'd ever been able to hit a curve.
