You know its a roadfood burger place when...

You know its a real roadfood burger place when there is a sign on the wall behind the counter saying "NO READING OF NEWSPAPERS AT COUNTER BETWEEN 12 AND 2". And its not a hand lettered paper sign but a professionally made metal sign, like a road sign.

Only a true roadfood place would have so many throngs of lunch time customers that they have to impose that type of discipline. Especially a place with only four items on the menu (and no printed or posted actual MENU, by the way)....

Would you ever see a sign like that at a Crapplebees or a Ruby Snoozedays? I think not.

The place I am referring to is the White Hut in West Springfield, MA...in biz since 1939 and the ONLY place even remotely of its kind in Massachusetts. I did a roadfood two-fer....went there for onion-smothered burgers, fries and a Stewarts root beer....then on to Donut Dip before getting back on the Mass Pike. Donut Dip...like stepping back into the 40's....amazing decor and donuts like they used to be made.

Sadly, here in central MA...we're dominated by the chains..Crapplebees, Ruby Snoozedays, Ahlove Garbage, Macmerunaway Grill....Picabadmeal Pub...99 Pub (99 reasons why I won't go there)
...Chilly's (my Chilly reception to the food)....Wronghorn Steakhouse,
....BarfOutback (after you eat there) Steakhouse, Draggin' Donuts, and Honey Dew Not Eat Them Donuts.....

Sadly, descriptions of RF places do me no good without pics. I need that visual stimulation.

I can truthfully say I've never seen a sign like that, and I was once an over the road trucker and have many RF type joints under my belt. Literally. And figuratively.

Aha. Why would anyone have time to read a newspaper there? I would be too busy eating.

Back when that sign went up I bet it was easier to find a good burger, and taking up a seat at the counter to eat and read the paper, during prime lunch time, would coast the owners money. Makes sense to me!

Have been trying to find split buns here in Huntsville, AL, to no avail. I have checked every grocery stores bakery and bread aisle. We have bratwurst every week, and I absoltey cannot stand regular hot dog buns. I did find a bratwurst type roll at Target, but it wasn't a split bun (top loading). There are lots of types of hogie rolls (split in half). I'll keep looking and hopefully will find them soon.

Or if there is a roughly equal mix of pick-ups,Jaguars, and SUV's, all with local tags. (Nothing about driving a nice car keeps you from loving good food.)

Basic split top hot dog/frankfurter rolls, like you get in New England.
Side split I can get, I miss the N.E. style.
I know that Freihoffer and JJ Neissen make them, as do many others--This really should be in the Hot Dog forum..Kinda got hijacked.
    Sorry....
    See photo above.

If you see cops, truckers or cabbies there, the place is likely to serve roadfood.

One of my favorite restaurant rating systems is from the book "Blue Highway", by William Least Heat Moon. He makes a cross country voyage of discovery in the mid 70s, sleeping in his van. He talks about his method of rating cafes and diners by the number of advertising calenders on the wall. Two or three calenders are OK, four or five is very good, and somewhere out there is the whispered about, but never seen seven calender Holy Grail of diners. This is a great read, written before the chain stores and restaurants took over small town America. The title Blue Highway represents the color of the two lane roads on the map, which he travels on almost exclusively.

I've found that if the aroma permeating the parking lot is wonderful so will the 'featured' food. I can smell a good hamburger cooking 'a mile away.'

When there are hand-written signs that have been added to, as they think of things to add to it.
A place I frequent for lunch (awesome tenderloins) has a sign stating:

"No Personal Check or Credit Cards"

    Below that in different ink:

    "No Large Bills"

    Followed later by:

"That Means Larger Than A Twenty"

The way a Roadfood Burger Joint smells outside as you inhale that wonderful greasy, "we got lots of great burgers cookin inside" air, usually is a dead giveaway on how good the Fare is.

Ha ha it's roadfood when the burger is served with fries / rings on wax paper and there's a sign there that says "pay before you eat!". And, you sit on stools at the counter and listen to much bantering and town gossip.
