Don't agree about the picture on the menu thing disqualifying a restaurant from roadfood glory. There is a place in Sterling, a little storefront called Vietnamese Noodle that has pictures and even a leather check holder but is most assuredly a roadfood type place. Great pho and entrees and they will do requests if they can. A killer meal and leftovers for about 20 for 2.

There's a place on Charles Street in Baltimore called "Gampy's" or the Great American Melting Pot. (http://dinesite.com/info/rstrnt-132428/) Many years ago, it was the prime hang-out for folks when all the bars shut down (they were open very late). I recall that it once had the reputation of being the local gay hang-out, as well. All I remember was really good inexpensive food. But looking at their sample menu now, I'm not sure. It might be a bit more hifalutin than it used to be. Ah well. Times do change.

When there's a special, higher-priced table in the kitchen so you can watch the chefs at work (a la Charlie Trotter's in Chicago)

There is a bigger point here... The road food places often serve the same few dishes exactly the same year after year. I'm not saying they don't have specials or change the menu but the old standbys are just that. Now, CT's in Chicago is famous for almost or actually never serving the same thing twice to the same guest. Dinning for those with attention defict, big wallets and in a never ending quest for something unique and different. CT's would be a place i'd want to visit if I was on the road and had lots of money... Roadfood for Billionaires...

quote:Originally posted by hhawk Older people make the best workers imho.. I totally agree. It's a reason to get up every day and gives a person a strong feeling of self worth. It's healthier as one ages, to choose to work because they want to as opposed to working because they have to. For some, working is a means of staying physically active and having benefits. Many have a strong work ethic. With the rising cost of living and the current state of the economy, many baby boomers may never have the opportunity to retire, while other generations don't have the word "retirement" in their vocabulary.
