Your Favorite Cold Cuts - Boar's Head?

There are innumerable varieties and brands of cold cuts, but I think nothing compares to Boar's head. If I may swipe something Redtressed posted in another thread: "Woe to those who don't have Boars Head availiable to them. One of the few, and I mean FEW brands recommended by the American Heart Association and the American Diabetic Association, yet so tasty and just better than what you can get at most supermarket delis. It's only availiable two places here, both sandwich joints. I convinced one to start selling by the pound and carrying the extensive line, they did under reservation, and now have the best deli business in the area. Kudos for Boars Head from me."

Still, with all the varieties they offer, I love the combo of the basic Deluxe Ham and Double Gloucester Cheese. What's your favorite brand and cut?

Got to agree with Grampy on this one. Boars head takes first place in cold cuts, with Thumans coming in second. I like Thumans boiled had and bologna as well as their hot dogs. Boars head does all of it good, including hot dogs. The take out places for subs and sandwiches that use Boars head all do well. When you have a really good product, it sells itself.

Boars Head Black Forest Turkey is divine - I have to watch myself with it!

There are so many different types and varieties, I find myself standing in front of the deli counter like a kid at a candy store.

I would never have tried their Lebanon bologna if I had not read about it here, and it is now a favorite.

The main difference between the Boars Head brand vs. some of the others like the store brand, or Sara Lee seems to be the salt or "processed" flavors the other brands have.

If you have not tried the Black Forest Turkey (sliced thin!), try it!

The Cajun Turkey is also quite good.

And, yes, sliced thin! The deli paople think I'm a mad man when bark that I want it all sliced thin. I can never understand when people ask for it on two or three.

Boar's Head is good but my favorite cold cuts are Alderfer's, a local company. The butcher counter of our village grocery store carries a variety of them sliced to order. They are just wonderful and actually have flavor. Here's a little info about them:

A Boar's Head delivery truck flipped over on I-64 this morning during the morning rush into Louisville. (icy spot on the highway) no one hurt...but the responding EMT Ambulance seem to ride as if it had a full load aboard when it left the scene. The truck body split at the seams and cases of cold cuts were everywhere...Traffic was held up for quite awhile while "Volunteers" helped clean up the roadway.
I would say that is a pretty good recommendation for the Boar's Head brand..it was 22 and colder than a butcher's block !!

Around me (North Central Jersey) 3 stand out; Boars's Head, Thumann's, and Dietz and Watson. All 3 great. I prefer Thumann's for hot dogs and roast beef, Dietz and Watson has excellent turkey and coldcuts, and everything from Boar's Head is excellent.

Yes! Thinner is better. I think Boar's meats are good, but their cheese is even better.

Yes, Dietz and Watson are very popular in the Mid Atlantic area.

I've always found it interesting that many hoagie shops in Philly identify whose salami or mortadella thay are using, and some will use meats from 3 or 4 purveyors on the same sandwich.

Has anyone tried the blazin' buffalo-style chicken breast from Boar's Head? I got some the other day. Unfortunately I only got a half a pound. It is definitely a keeper in the rotation.

The hot capocollo, though a tad fatty for some, is nice to blend with other cuts. I always send my wife to get the Boar's Head cold cuts, becuase if I do, I tend to buy far too much.

I like the Boars head brand too but I also like Grandmas Turkey Breast. Closest to home baked I've had. A little grocery that is near me takes the regular cooked ham they get & coat it with brown sugar & stick in cloves & bake it. Makes the best baked ham sandwiches short of bone in ham.

Yup Boar's Head goes to the head of the class. But... the deli meats at Central Market are fantastic. They have a rosemary ham that is to die for (imported), their turkey tastes like grandma's, and their roast beef tastes like a good steak.

I am fed up with the Hillshire Farms and other mass-produced kielbasa, and my daughter, who lives in Scottsdale, told me that she really likes the Boar's Head brand. I called the Boar's Head distributer in my area to ask where I could find some and he told me that two of the many Kroger stores in this area carried it. I went to one of those stores today and was told they don't carry the kielbasa. Oh, well.
