Your Favorite Monster T. V. Show. Tue, 01/27/09 1:51 AM (permalink)
Dearfolk,
Someone reminded me of the Groovy Ghoolies, so I decided to post this to see what sort of amazing-to-idiotically funny responses the thread would receive.
My favorite wouldn't be a situation comedy: it would be the original movie "Frankenstein" from something like 1931.
The Addams Family was funny sometimes, though... especially when Uncle Fester lit the lightbulb in his mouth.
And the story goes that Cousin Itt really was a petite woman with VERY long hair.
Feedback, anyone? (I have no earplugs, so keep those amps set low.)
Monstrously Hurriedly, Ort. Carlton in Ghastly-Trafficked Athens, Georgia.

We still watch Svengoolie on Saturday nights and plays 'em all over the course of a couple of years!  For TV, the Adams Family.  Cousin It always gave me the creeps!

I spent many Saturday afternoons with my friends watching the local horror movie shows - in Kansas in the early '60s we had the Morticia-esque Penny Dreadful (wonder how many female hosts were in the game?). Detroit in the late '60s had the beloved Sir Graves Ghastly - a decade later they ran The Ghoul from the mysterious land of Ohio (with many references to the fabled town of Parma)

In IN as a kid we could somewhat pick up the low watt signal from channel 4 in Indy and on Friday nights watch Sammy Terry (say it fast and out loud).

Like ChiTownDiner, I watch Svengoolie every Saturday night, even when he shows unwatchable crud like " The Car " and " People Under the Stairs ". As far as sitcoms are concerned, it's gotta be The Munsters; I love that show. In fact, I just bought the complete two-season DVD set the other day. Can't watch them yet though; first I have to finish watching the 200+ episodes of I Love Lucy on DVD that I got last week ( I'm already finished with the Andy Griffith Show. ) Gawd, do I love TV!.....

                      Wow, Ort,

I haven't thought of "The Groovy Goolies" for, just about, EVER!!!

Was "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" on "The Groovy Goolies"?  Didn't Sabrina start out on "The Archies"?  Were they spinoffs of one another?  Inquiring minds, ya know.

Apparently the Ghoul I knew was from the sunny shores of Cleveland. I never knew what the hell his 'Plunk your magic twanger, Froggy' segments were about until finding out Froggy was an evil being in 1950s kiddie shows who apparently survived into the 70s - and for all I know, is still around...somewhere.

Froggy was from Captian Andy's Gang with Andy Devine (Wild Bills sidekick later on) It had a number of shorts within the program much like Mickey Mouse Club did. Froggy was just a mild trouble maker, not evil, he would introduce some of the segments.

I still laugh while watching reruns of the Addams Family. There was just so much going on...Gomez pulling fully lit cigars out of his pocket, Uncle Fester's universal solution to any problem (Let's shoot him in the back) & last, but certainly not lest, Carolyn Jones slinking around in that outfit. Sort of like "Leave it to Beaver" or "The Donna Reed Show" gone over to the dark side.

I used to love Dark Shadows, ran home from school everyday to see it.
                                    Night Stalker with Darren McGavin.
Buffy - the first couple of seasons.
And I have to confess, I liked Charmed!

If anyone notices the dates of the responses, there seems to be a time warp in this thread. Spooky....!!
Just for a warm-up, I would -definitely- be watching this:

                                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMWkqRFbHTk

For me, watching Creature Features was the late night choice. This was one show where the hosts wore a suit and tie. They were able to get actual stars and directors, along with other luminaries to appear and have a normal discussion.

First was Bob Wilkins. He was sardonic and in some ways, helpful in creating the attitude that B-movies had some camp value. He would warn you that the film was so bad that he understood if you switched channels.  He died last year, but there are many fans that are putting together memorials for him for later this year.

When Bob left the show, he was replaced by his friend, John Stanley who was a film critic for the SF Chronicle.

Oh, I LOVED Dick Von Hoene as the Ghoul. Watched it on my mom's portable black-and-white TV in the kitchen (The only place we could reliably get Channel 19) every Saturday. I even remember going to the opening of a new Arby's in Anderson Twp. dressed as the Cool Ghoul and getting filmed with him.

Al, believe it or not, I just obtained, on DVD, an episode of the early 1950s puppet show Time for Beany, which predated the Beany and Cecil cartoon series by roughly ten years. I bought a 4-disc set called Hiya, Kids!! A '50s Saturday Morning, which contains episodes of twenty different children's TV series from the 1950s. Some great stuff like Kukla Fran and Ollie, Howdy Doody, Pinky Lee, Ding Dong School, Sky King and Rootie Kazootie. Since preservation of TV episodes was so haphazard in the '50s, it's quite possible that this is the only surviving episode of Time for Beany ( hope not. )
