John, I welcome you to leave the cozy confines of New Palz New York and take a trip to Milwaukee. I'd be honored to take you on a tour of Milwaukee's brewery's where I'm sure I could find you a brew that would make you forget Gilded Otter!

I'm not surprised not everyone cares for Sprecher, as there still is a market for those "root beer" flavored hard candies.

As a long-time Diet Soda drinker,I would go with (in order)

1. Stewarts
2. Boylans
3. Sprechers

Generally speaking, nothing beats an iced-mug A&W on a hot summer day.

I never was lucky enough to where there was a Stewarts or Hires drive in, but we had a small (3 or 4 outlets) what I believe was local chain called B & K in Summit County, Ohio. I loved their root beer and chili dogs, especially when we would gather there after a neighborhood Little League game. One of my mom's friends still buys a couple gallons of their chili each year before they close for the winter. She freezes it in portions to enjoy at home until the spring thaw.

My favorite root beer isn't actually root beer ... it's white (clear) birch beer from Lycoming County, PA. Loads of wintergreen notes. When I visit my aunt in Williamsport I can occasionally find 2L bottles of Frozen Run but usually have to content myself with 12 packs of Weiss Market's store brand.

From the store, it's Stewarts. The diet Stewarts is better than anything I've tasted in a bottle.

When I was a kid, I used to drink Richardson's Root Beer at a local drug store soda fountain. Always served in a frosty mug. The best I remember. Has anyone heard of this brand? Still around?

Anyone ever hear of Ricky's?

I used to get in on tap and the Los Angeles County Fair. Got it every year until maybe 10 years ago. They haven't been there since.

It was smooth, it was tasty, it was the best I've ever had and I've been searching for that same taste ever since.

I used to like Dad's a lot, but haven't seen it in a while. I like stewarts, but am also very fond of birch beer.

How about my grandfather's favorite while I was growing up in the early 50's: Sasaparilla. Now that's great...but very hard to find today. What's the difference from regular root beer?
