Payday is one of the best confections going. Bar none (that was one, too, wasn't it?).

What's this stuff about Bill Murray. . . .!?

Payday is one of the best confections going. Bar none (that was one, too, wasn't it?). The convenience stores have/had the big 79 cent version.

What's this stuff about Bill Murray. . . .!? Underrated. For a reason.

Focus group: try that Payday is a salty alternative to those nasty chocolate things. I don't think "fatty" acids is going to sell to all the Atkins folks and such.

The Sundancer was buying the payday back in the early 50's at a little country store that I passed every day on my bicycle while carrying papers. I had a couple of hundred customers that stretched out over seven miles. I did this every day for several years. I think I made about $3-$4's weekly.

I would buy a payday with a small coke in a bottle. I loved that salty peanut with caramel taste.

I really love Paydays. I could become seriously addicted if I kept them around the house, so I don't (and I really have to work hard to stay out of the peanut butter!) I'm surprised in a way that Paydays are still available--they have been around a long time (anyone remember when they were made by Hollywood Candy?), and don't seem to fit the current trends that Hershey and Mars are pushing these days (which seems to be either some sort of chocolate/wafer bar like KitKat, Snickers which are being marketed in sports-related publications for their value as an energy bar, or good ol' M&Ms. I guess the absence of chocolate makes them an anachronism. I'm glad they're still around.

If you like Paydays, here's a recipe you might like!

Salted Peanut Bars (They taste like a Pay Day candy bar and are quick and easy to make.)

1½ cups all purpose flour
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ + ¼ cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 egg yolks
3 cups miniature marshmallows
2/3 cup corn syrup
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 (10-oz.) pkg. Reese’s peanut butter chips
1 (16-oz.) can salted, dry roasted peanuts

Heat oven to 350°.
In large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda, ½ cup softened butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and egg yolks until crumbly.
Press firmly in bottom of ungreased 9X13X2-inch baking pan. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with marshmallows.
Return to oven and bake an additional 1 or 2 minutes until marshmallows just begin to puff. Cool while preparing topping.

In a large saucepan, combine corn syrup, ¼ cup butter, vanilla and peanut butter chips. Over low heat melt just until chips are melted and mixture is smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in peanuts. Immediately spoon warm topping evenly over marshmallows; dipping your fingers in water to prevent stickiness, spread to cover. Refrigerate until firm; 1 hour and cut into bars dipping the knife into hot water occasionally.

I lived in Texas at the time. I guess I had to be in my early teens. That was about 15yrs ago. I still look for them at the stores here in California but haven't had any luck:(

OK, Scooby, I need to know more. What year did you see it? When was the last time you saw it? What state were you in when you bought it?

I can't believe I missed out.

Payday bars are good for people on the Atkins diet. You can pick out and eat the peanuts, then throw away the nougat filling. A single bar lasts several minutes, if you take your time, and you'll only ingest a couple grams of carb. If you buy a bag or can of peanuts instead of just a Payday bar, you will probably blow your carb count.

A fresh Payday bar is Heaven in a wrapper, but I always pick up the bar and test it for freshness by bending it. If there is some "give" it is probably fresh. There is nothing worse than a stale Payday.

If you are ever in the Minnesota area and want a Payday good luck! As you will have a hard time finding one. Pearsons salted nut roll is the regional payday here. And they occasionally do make a chocolate covered one.

Payday bars are great for people who can't have chocolate. My sister had a heart condition and could not eat chocolate because of the caffiene. She had to eat Payday bars or Zero bars. She recently had corrective heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic and is now allowed to eat chocolate much to her delight.

I used to really enjoy the Payday Bars. I tried one recently (Last Trick or Treat Night Giveaways) I was very disappointed. The package of 6 bars we had to give out were very stale and dried out. Plus after the Gall Bladder thing a couple of years back, Peanuts are hard on me!!
I do have fond memories of eating all the nuts off the center...then enjoying the center filling alone !!

I never had a Payday Bar. I don't like nuts in candy. I like nuts, and I like candy. I just don't like them together.

I love Paydays I just don't eat them as much, but I recall many times picking the peanuts off of them and eating them and then saving the caramel nougat center and eating it all by itself. I've tried the Honey Roasted version and I don't think it is as good

While certainly not a full-fledged classic like Baby Ruth or O'Henry, Payday is a fine major league candy bar that has its niche.

However, note that more than one person commented on the freshness problem. Could be there's a shelf-life situation that isn't being addressed as well as we'd like.

I always liked Paydays but yes if you got a stale one "blech". It was the combination of the nuts and the sweetness / saltiness that I enjoyed. But, if I had to pick I'd rather have peanut brittle or a Heath bar over Payday any day (though I've not had any of those for years).

My mom got me into eating these years back. It was the salty/sweet combo that hooked me. It's my favorite to this day. But if I need a chocolate fix, I go for Take 5. Other than that, Payday is perfect.

Hello All,
I have always loved PayDays. My grandfather had a true country, general store from the late 1920's-1974.
As a child all I cared about what his jukebox, pin-ball machine, pop(or soda-pop) cooler (which glass bottles
were cooled by water), and his candy shelves.
PayDay was one of my favorite bars.
I still like them, but I miss the salt. I remember when there were grains of salt on the peanuts.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

Am I the only one who remembers BigPay, the brother of PayDay? I haven't seen it in so long that I don't even remember why I liked it.
I just remember buying a Payday once a week when I went shopping with my mother, then noticing BigPay alongside it. My loyalty was immediately changed.

I can't find any mention of it anywhere, but I know I didn't imagine it.

Anyone remember BigPay???

I'm surprised Pay Days are so hard to find, I live in Michigan and you can find them in abundance. Just last week I see they came back out with the chocolate covered Pay Day. I haven't tried it and I just think I would like the original better. I used to love picking all the peanuts off and then eating the center by itself.
