Being a New Englander, I prefer the sweet style, B&M or Bush's are the staple brands in CT. I like driving past the big factory up in Maine, cool landmark. :)

I make my own.  Based on "Bushie's beans".

For the ones that actually say "Pork and Beans" on the can I prefer Campbells. I was curious though as to what the original dish was.

I remember when Campbell's came with a chunk of salt pork (pork fat) in each can.  I have no idea how they add the pork these days.

In England, the Brit's love their beans on toasted bread for breakfast.

All beans are good. The favorite brand is in the taste buds at the time.
I always liked bacon and pineapple added to mine.

An ad from 1958. Did people ever think so highly of canned beans that they'd serve them like this, or is it a fantasy of the manufacturer?

nope, it's real. my grandmother used to serve us baked hotdogs with pork and beans all the time because it was cheap. she was an army nurse in korea, so that's probably why she did it........ she also served us cold, fresh-from-the-can spam sandwiches that were totally disgusting. spam in the 70's had more fat and a lot more 'snot' in the can than modern spam...

what is brown bread?

and a real lol at the guy who said he hit the jackpot and got pieces of pork in a can!

I make my own beanie wienies.  One thing is do is slice the dogs and brown the sides before adding the beans.  Gives you a nice texture contrast with the tender beans.

Brown bread comes in a can. B & M makes a nice version. I open both ends of the can, push it out, wrap in foil and heat it in the oven. It kind of tastes like a bran muffin with raisins. It goes well with franks & beans and ham.
