Your favorite food shows (not necessarily the best)
Mon, 08/9/10 3:38 PM
( permalink)
What are your favorite food shows on television (any network)? I am referring to the ones you like watching, not necessarily the ones with the best quality: My favorites: GOOD EATS. Sometimes, all the show does is convince me that I DON'T want to make the featured product, but it's always fun to watch, and I'm a sucker for food science. DINERS, DIVES, and DRIVE-INS. Guy Fieri has a talent to make you almost be able to taste the food you are watching. KITCHEN NIGHTMARES: I'm a sucker for a happy ending. Bart

The old ones from above and Floyd on Fish. Also Bourdain's No Reservations - especially the ones he does in the US - more especially the one he did with Harvey Pekar in Cleveland.

I'm not a Guy Fieri fan but the Diners Drive Ins & Dives show is, as he says - money. I could watch these people cook all day & all night. FN could probably send Guy on his way to another show and just let us watch all these regional people cook up their good stuff - this is what Anerican's eating out is all about.

the ancient mariner Oh and that Wilson guy with the overalls----- and the new England accent. Loved him ! Are we talking about Justin Wilson?? He has a decidedly Cajun accent!! What a great story teller he was!! It seemed to me that the show was more about the stories than the food although, he had some pretty good recipes. Martin Yan was always one of my favorites on P.B.S. as well as Jacques Pepin. More recent shows include: Good Eats, B.B.Q.U; also on P.B.S. and Giada de Laurentis (for the obvious reasons.) Guy Fieri (not his real name by the way) just annoys me with his huge bites and bling. JMHO David O.

Nigella - someone please tell me what channel she is on, or was? Two early Sat. mornings about 6:30 am I watched her show, what I thought was the Food Network, now her show is off the air? Diner's, Drive Ins, etc, - I agree with bailey on this, keep Guy behind the camera, and just let the owners/employees do the talking. No Reservations - I prefer his visits to American cities, too. Food Finds - I'm not intererested in buying the products endorsed, but it's interesting to see how and where certain crops are grown around the country, and entrepreneurs with their food producs.

BelleReeve, It looks as though Nigella has been moved to a mid-afternoon spot on The Cooking Channel ( a sister to FoodTV ). Otherwise, I enjoy the repeats of: Two Fat Ladies Feasting on Asphalt Top Chef Masters Or the currently broadcasting: Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives - Not for the host, but the locations! harleytexas Galloping Gourmet The last time I watched the Galloping Gourmet is when he accidentally poured flaming brandy on the stage manager. That's when I decided that drunks weren't funny. And sober, he was kind of boring. Bart

Tastytoo Steve Raichlen Primal Grill! Always makes me hungry! OK, you got my interest. I never heard of it, but not only do I like Steve Raichlen's cookbooks, I have corresponded with him a few years ago (on his website) and he was always very open and enthusiastic about answering questions (IIRC I asked him about the best generally available smoking wood for jerk, using a Weber Grill to simulate a tandoor, and brisket techniques, among other things). I found the show's website, checked my local public TV schedules, and now know when it's on. Thanks! Bart

They didn't come any better and more entertaining, than the Justin Wilson show. I taped all his segments on VHS to view later time in life. Trouble is I no longer have a VHS machine. No More, No More, ain't going to watch, No More. Current shows, I most only watch the Cook Offs and Diners,Drive-ins and Dives.

Ming Tsai's "East meets West" was my wake up call to Asian Fusion, and that it wasn't at all about just adding soy sauce and ginger. "Good Eats" - Food science rocks. "Iron Chef" both the old Japanese show and current American one. I get a lot of inspiration out of it, and it's facinating watching cooking at that high a level.

Doug S - I don't know the expense involved, but are there some camera shops around that would convert the VHS to DVD? My poor dad has the same problem with home movies he had converted to VHS years ago. HelloDriver - welcome to Roadfood and thanks for the info on Nigella. I only saw two of her shows but liked them.

AHI MPLS America's Test Kitchen - I'm a sucker for a man wearing a bow tie. And ATK's spinoff "Cook's Country" is equally entertaining. Especially when Axel the neighbor asks the team for help with something his wife made. Brad

I've mentioned it in other threads, but one type of show I find completely unwatchable: cake shows. It's not food or cooking; it's sculpture with unstable materials.

I love "No Reservations" and " Man Vs Food" though i could do without the eating challenges of the latter. I also like Dhani Jones' show though it is not really about food.

I just watched a vintage PBS cooking show yesterday with Jacques Pepin and Julia Child together making beef stews. Totally fascinating. They don't get any better.

BBQ U hasn't been produced for a few years; IIRC he took a year off between its end and the start of his current show Primal Grill (now in season 3). Create TV is currently showing previously aired episodes of both. Brad

I like Triple D, MVF, No Reservations, Iron Chef - depending on the ingredient though. The Japan version was great, IMO. I remember watching Gallopping Gourmet as a child and being fascinated. Two Fat Ladies was one of my all time favorites. More lard anyone? While her recipes are good, Barefoot Contessa I find to be unwatchable due to her voice and personality. I used to really like Paula Deen's show (not the party fiasco) but now anytime I see her on she's making some dessert and I'm not a sweets person.
