Hey all, my first post here. I'm astonished that none of the Philadelphia-area people has yet mentioned Gianfranco Pizza Rustica on 3rd just off of Market. Fresh crushed tomatoes in the sauce, perfect thin crust, superbly baked cheese and pepperoni. At least, this was all so several years ago when I still lived in Philly. Tragically, no one ever mentioned Tacconelli's to me until after I moved away. It's at the top of my to-do list next time I visit.

In Austin, I've had great pizza at Brick Oven on 35th (NOT the other locations), Frank & Angie's and the Flying Tomato Pizza Kitchen. Saccone's has some good stuff too, although the crust could stand to be baked a little longer.

Boston - Pizzeria Regina's in the North End is still a damn good pie. Someone else mentioned the hole-in-the-wall place on Blackstone St and that is also very good, especially for a slice or two at lunch.

John's in NYC (Theatre district) was over-rated. We went there after seeing it on the Food Network.

My wife & I hit the Jersey shore a few times each year, and we always have a pie or 2 at Vic's Pizza in Bradley Beach, NJ. Thin-crusted heaven (as is Federici's in Freehold). Make sure you also get the Chopped Antipasto Salad at Vic's.

Beleive it or not Sbarro's isn't bad either for a franchise pizza chain. Started in Brooklyn and branched out nationwide. Pizza is pretty good depending on which one you go to since some capture the NY style pizza better than others. However, they are much better than Pizza Hut, Dominos and Papa Johns. I really like their Strombolis, Lasangna and Chicken Ziti. Decent Italian food bar.

The only John's to go to is the original in the Village. Not to everyone's taste, but it's definitely got its own style.

As Meat Loaf sang, two out of three ain't bad. Instead of Ohio, the third state in which Monical's operates is Wisconsin, although it's only one location in Arbor Vitae, way up north on US 51.

Check out http://www.monicals.com/ for details.

Does anyone remember a place called Aurilios (I'm sure I massacred the spelling of that!) It used to be in the Lehigh Valley, PA, at the Lehigh Valley Mall (I think there's a ChiChis in the same location now).. It used to be a HUGE treat for us kids when my parents took us there back in the 80's.. Thin, crispy pizza with pitchers of birch beer.. The best combo! Does anyone know what happened to it?

I have a great little pizza place on the NW side of Knoxville, called Papa Dom's. It's only carryout or delivery, but the guy makes them in the old fashioned ovens, he's Italian, and he's got a good variety of pizzas at a price below the 2 main national chains which are also nearby.
Another great pizza I liked came from Lebanon, OH. The place, which just recently went out of business, made a pierogi pizza. It was a pizza, with mashed potatoes, cheese, on the top. No tomato sauce, but a kind of buttery sauce that was incredibly good. The potatoes would brown up really nice. Too bad it's gone.

Try Fillipo's on Lincoln in Milwaukee. I live in California but every year my family insists on going there the first night we're back in town. Crust is perfect, anchovys are great and the pitchers reasonable. Sounds odd, but they have a good fish fry every Fryday. They're big in Wisconsin.

I am getting hungry for a Butches pizza now. Thick stringy cheese, good pizza sauce, fairly thin crust.Sausage and fresh mushrooms are all I need to be happy. Pepperoni is a nice bonus though.

Best Pizza in New Mexico is at a place in Corrales, NM called Village Pizza.

In Florida - CiGi's Pizza in Oviedo and Victorio's in Winter Springs. In Orlando go to Michael's Italian Restaurant on the East side. They also make a killer baked ziti, but I digress.

"Martino's", Kokomo, Indiana; North Washington Street. I love the Stromboli's and have been eating them since I was a little girl. When I go home I run there to get me one.

They are on Italian bread and baked in the oven (oh my I need one now)

"Giovani's" Main street Fairborn Ohio has great pizza.

Pizza King (indiana) and marion's (Dayton, Ohio) have the best thin crust where they cut them into triangles and you pop them in your mouth. I love the sausage ground up too.

Pizza king has great sub strombolis too. I like the submarine type better then the calizone type strombolis.

There used to be a great pizza place in Oxfords, OH called "Bruno's". Right on High Street, and you could walk in and they would always have at least a cheese pizza cut up and ready for take out, or buy a slice. Then it burned down a few years ago and I don't know if it ever reopened.

A few miles south on 436, on Pershing Avenue at Semoran Blvd. is Brooklyn Pizza. The best pies in Orlando, and terrific subs. Brooklyn
Pizza uses fresh red and green peppers and mushrooms, no cans, and they make sausage rolls that are almost as good as the pizza. They also make a combination sausage and meatball sub called the Carlo's Supreme (if memory serves), that has both mozzerella and ricotta cheese. Limited seating and no ambience, just good food. It's on the northwest corner next to a beauty parlor and a gas station.

Cheeseboard in Berkeley makes one hell of a pizza. Sure, it's California style with gourmet toppings, but it's excellent pizza. See here:

I'm also a huge fan of Scholls Public House in the Portland, OR, area. A Brooklyn bred friend thinks it's as good as the good stuff back home. Here are pics:

Great website. I was stunned to see Big Ed's Pizza rated on here. Sundancer will have to read & comment. I only wish there were more cities listed.

My girlfriend just about had a cat when I showed her the top 10 list. Her favorite T-Shirt is from Big Ed’s. She lived in Knoxville and graduated from Knoxville Catholic High.

My favorite place in Houston is Colina’s in the Heights. The crust is crisp and tasty, the ingredients plentiful, and there is little sauce, just the way I like it!

Colony Grill in Stamford Connecticut. Don't expect anything fancy from this 1960s style Irish Bar. And don't expect anything else but thin crust pizza that comes HOT- I especially like the sausage with hot oil but the kids go for plain cheese.

J&G Pizza in Brick, NJ!!! It's a hole in the wall that you wouldn't stop at unless you knew what they made inside. The subs aren't anything special (go to Vinnie's in Lansdale, PA for that!), but J&G's pizza is the best I've ever had, and having grown up in Jersey that's saying something. The Brother's in Red Bank, NJ used to have excellent pizza too, but I haven't been there in probably 15 years and I think they've changed ownership, so I can't guarantee anything there.

Two great local pizza places in the Roswell/Alpharetta (NE of Atlanta) area are Allesio's and Philly Pizza. Philly makes the best steak and cheese subs I've had in the South. When I ordered my first one I made sure to specify white American and the guy behind the counter looked at me like I had commited a faux pas and said "Of course". They have a great pizza sauce, too. The only quibble I have is their crust, it has a sort of matzoh taste to it. Allesio's crust isn't as crisp, you have to eat their pie on a plate or risk slippage, but it's good enough to eat the ends. They also have daily specials of things not on their regular menu, like seafood canneloni.

Family Pizza in the Triangle Va area was great 30 yrs ago, and good 5 yrs ago when I most recently went back. It is hard to live up to a memory. Speaking of memories, the Wishing Well in Springfield MA had perhaps the highest priced "help" in the area 30 years ago. It was very common to find the police chief or a judge working in the kitchen. It took me 6 months to catch on as to who they were. I was just a college kid who worked there part time, and knew them by their first names. They were helping a buddy for free. I may have been the only paid worker, but didn't realize it at the time. The pizzas were of very variable quality. Some were among the best I have ever had, but others were not so hot. The pizzas were not made by formula but rather by "feel". They were not made in a pan, and so had odd shapes. The bottoms were often scorched from cooking directly on the brick floor of the oven.

I usually gripe about the lack of good pizza places around my area, but having just returned from Christmas vacation in Texas I am did get my fill of NY style pizza. Joe's Pizza in Cleburne TX (I believe they have one in Benbrook as well) is one of my favorites. Owned and run by Italians - a rare thing outside of the NE.
