Your favorite school lunch....

What was your favorite school lunch(K-12)? I'm talking about food that was actually prepared in your school cafeteria by lunch ladies.

It'll sound weird but mine was spaghetti and meat sauce. We were country people and never had that at home.

Our lunch ladies didn't actually prepare anything, they just received the deliveries and reheated the frozen or canned stuff.

They did, however, make killer peanut butter-graham cracker bars topped with chocolate, a recipe I use to this day.

We should say when we were in school. Stuff changes. I graduated in 97.

My "I think most was cooked by the ladies" favorites:
Rotini with meat sauce, garlic bread, salad but the salad was terrible, soooo soggy and bland. The monthly Thanksgiving turkey, stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes, cranberries were really good. Meatloaf was good, same with pierogies. I know they were frozen, but those Mexican pizzas were excellent.

Most of the fast food things like hoagies, pizza, burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese were just terrible. Anything with cheese was either very dry or clumpy. Even the PB&J was bad. How do you screw that up?

This is what my old school has everyday now: Pizza Hut, bacon cheeseburgers, various fried poppers, fountain pop, a "Mexibar" where you make your own tacos and such and a smoothie machine. Plus breakfast sammiches and doughnuts/coffee for the lazy "parents".

Kids shouldn't be eating that stuff everyday. I am officially old now.

Although I had no affinity for foreign languages, I had a great affinity for tech, and I spent my lunches in high school as a "monitor" in the foreign languages department, mostly keeping their falling apart equipment in repair (rexograph, mimeograph, and the reel-to-reel tape players in the language lab). One of the benefits is that I had access to the teachers' cafeteria, which had superior food at low prices. My favorite from them was the chicken parmigiana, a real thin sliced chicken cutlet, sauteed and then topped with mozzarella and a not bad tomato sauce.

Turkey Tetrazini followed by a Ranger Cookie.

I was the school pudding pusher in the sixth grade.

I also enjoyed the cheese enchiladas that were served to the teachers.  It's where I ate them first.

Being a pusher had its benefits.

My favorite was in junior high school in the late 60s.  #1 favorite was beef(?) in gravy over mashed potatoes, and 2nd favorite was square cheese pizza.

My senior high had 2 hamburger joints across the street, I don't remember ever eating in the cafeteria there.

In high school it was the nickle scoop of mashed potatoes with brown gravy!

In elementary school the hot dogs and the hamburgers had the same delicious condiment on them.  It was some concoction of mustard, relish (maybe dill) and.... butter.  I saw them putting butter in it, but to this day I've never been able to recreate it.  I loved it.

Closest thing we ever had to school lunches was those infrared oven heated sandwiches that they started in the late 60's when I was in Jr. High. Before that it was brown bag or sometimes they would have a special Friday thing that volunteer school moms would make either hot dogs or sloppy joes.  The SJ's were very good and to this day, I'm not sure what was in them but wish I could taste them again. It wasn't really a BBQ type sauce either. I've read that Chicken Gumbo soup was a common ingredient in school food service SJ's back then, but there was no rice in these, so I don't think that was it. Whatever they were, they were the best. I tasted that same recipe of all places at a poolside concession during the early 70's and it was near identical. All my years, I've never found a recipe similar.

After that those infrared sandwiches were gross. Whatever didn't sell was reheated the next day and tasted horrible. First ones were Stewart, the latter around the time I graduated were Landshire. They had a hot Hoagie that wasn't too bad if you got fresh, neither was the foot long hot dog that was covered in reconstituted chopped onions and some kind of bean paste. We had no choice but to drink little cartons of milk. Volatile combination...and we didn't have air condition back then.

I don't remember my school lunch being freshly cooked. I suppose at that age, we couldn't care. So bring on the dinosaur shaped chicken and alphabet tomato soups

Bowl of hamburger based chili with a LOT of beans in it, not spicy, and a peanut butter sandwich made for US Govt Issue peanut butter, had a grainy texture to it, almost like some the organic types today.  This was late 60's, still make something like it when I'm in the mood.

The ellios type pizza with shoestring fries. I really don't remember anything else and I doubt they actually "made" anything.

I rarely ever ate school food, when I was in elementary-middle school, my grandmother made me a lunch almost every day... Carl Buddig ham sandwich, chips, and a Dr. Pepper. In high school, the only things I can remember eating are french fries that were actually pretty good, and the square pizza. I disliked every second of school from day one until the day I left, so I spent a lot of time ignoring as much about it as possible.

I have great memories of mock chicken legs that the ladies actually hand made. I have been looking for them since grade school-to no avail. A close second was the square pizza that seems to have been served in every cafeteria around the country in the 60s. By the way, CSD, what a fun subject!!

Thanks, Ann. When I was in first grade at Bryant School on the west side of Chicago in 1953, there was no lunch room or cafeteria. We brown bagged it and sat on the floor of the basement of the school against a wall. The school provided us with bottled milk, .02 for white mile and .03 for chocolate.

I liked Fiesta Pizza. This pizza had greasy cheddar cheese with taco flavored beef. The slice was in the shape of an octagon.

While it was not my favorite, a lunch item I always remember was a slice of bologna with a scoop of mashed potatoes on top of it and a slice of American cheese melted over it.

The best lunch in our school was baked spaghetti. I'd get doubles and bury it in cheese..then fall asleep in history right after lunch..

None of the grammar schools I attended had lunches, and I saw the junior high cafeteria just one time and decided never to return. In high school I never even knew where the cafeteria was located.

In elementary school during the fall menu they had this chicken casserole dish.  chunks of chicken, creamy, wide egg noodles, and a crunchy crumb topping.

The side was usually canned corn, jello cubed with whipped cream mixed in, a roll and chocolate milk.

It was EVERY thursday from October to February, and it was the only day (beside pizza day) that i would not brown bag it!

The Hi Lo sandwich was my favorite...1 slice of bologna, 1 transparent slice of ham, a wilted piece of iceberg lettuce, thin slice of tomato, a ring or two of wilted stinky onion, and a slice of processed American cheese....... all on a Stroehmann's hamburger bun. No mustard, no mayonnaise no nothin'..... On the side was a handfull of cold frozen french fries, and a snickerdoodle for desert. Milk, white for a beverage.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......brings back allot of memories.

I started school in '58 and all the food in our small rural school was made on site. We had some great meals. I loved the mac and cheese, the spaghetti, the tuna casseroles.

When I was in 4th grade I went to a catholic school in a small village in Montana. The moms made lunch every day and occasionally we would get steak or pot roast etc when a rancher slaughtered a steer. Yumm

My favorite meal prepared by the lunch ladies was when I was teaching and it was served in the faculty dinningroom.  It was a baked cheese sandwich.  White bread soaked in egg and milk, cheese in the middle and cheese on top, then baked.  they served it with a bit of grape jelly.  Boy they were good!

In grade school, 1953-1959, my school did not have a cafeteria.  1st, 2nd,3rd, & 4th grades had their own rooms, 5th & 6th were in one room.  Every Friday the PTA moms(including my mom) would sell hot dogs.  They would setup a table with a hot dog machine, hot water on one side for the dogs, buns on the other side, glass sides.  The moms would bring homemade hotdog chili, coleslaw(West Virginia!!), onions, mustard(never catsup).  No special orders, all with chili, coleslaw, onions, mustard.  The smells were wonderful.  That hour before lunch was torture- our tummys would growl & none of us would pay attention.
    Best hot dogs ever!!

I liked the spaghetti, turkey, and hot dog days.  And, I liked it in 6th grade when you could have a chef salad.  If you wanted the chef salad, you had to sign up for it in the morning.  I hated the pizza and the sloppy joes.
