Im thinking about serving exotic meats like kangaroo dogs or aligator dogs.  have any of you tried this? they are super expensive but I feel people would pay.  thanks for your input

Biker Jim has been succesful with this business model. Look him up, he went from one cart to two and a resturant in a short time.

      Hey mark,
        I tried it this year.
After it was shipped it was about $2 a link. The links were only 3 oz. They weren't really that big so I didn't feel like I could charge that much so I was selling them for $5.
If I'm spending $5 I want to be filled up and they weren't big enough to fill you up. Don't get me wrong they were delicious! I had to serve them on a hot dog roll because of the size also. Another thing is there raw, so cooking them and holding them became a problem.
biker jim is getting his precooked, there 4 oz and he's picking them up local.

If you can get the pricing and cooking right its gold. For me, I think the shipping cost kills me.
The things are so good tho, they sell themselves

biker jims looks awesome! I found these dogs online they are kinda of expensive.  I think it would be real cool to have something so unique.
I totaly understand you Jay, the place I found them they said they were pre cooked. If they are not, I wont buy them, the last thing I need is someone getting sick of a crazy kangaroo dog at my cart

A couple of years ago I started selling alligator on a stick at events. I breaded them, deep fried, sold for $5.00. At that time I was paying $6.00 a pound for alligator, using about 1/4 pound of meat on each stick. I just checked yesterday and the cheapest I can find alligator now is around $13.95 a pound.I don`t do hot dogs anymore, but will say the alligator went real well at motorcycle events. I always get tickled at my patrons, seems everyone who purchased the alligator at one time or another wreastled these animals in their younger days. lol

What they probably did was go to FL where tourists could "wrestle" an alligator. It used to be a popular tourist thing back when (died out by the end of the 60's). Most folks would back out after seeing the teeth but a few idiots did it. They would plop the gators out on a concrete slab and the gators would basically go to sleep while some silly Yankee tourist tried to move it.

Back in the 70's a circus of some sort came to Franklin NC. They had "real Seminole indians" wrestling a few little gators on the concrete apron surrounding the county's toddler wading pool. My dad  stood there and laughed at them. Told them his two girls played with gators bigger than what they were wrestling (and we did). Said if they really wanted to wrestle the gator's they would toss them in the big swimming pool.He even offered to wrestle the gators for them... only if we could keep the gator (new toy!!!). They turned him down. Dad used to hunt gators back when they were big. 20 to 25 footers were "normal". Largest was a 35 ft gator him and his friend Mutt caught. My uncle would wrestle gators in 5 ft of water for "fun". Gators are more dangerous in the water.

Exotic dogs are pretty fun and will go a long way to set you apart.  But if you look, I bet you could find some really interesting stuff in your neighborhood.  Try for some ethnic stuff, Linguisa's, interesting Italian or German brats.  Fennel brats, steak brats, local beer brats, you know stuff.  I know having a rattlesnake or reindeer brat will peak peoples interest, but an Italiano Blanco, or a Guinness Brat dressed with a paprika remoulade and some deep fried onions is ridiculously delicious. I guess what I'm saying is, if you can't find the weird stuff...find the good stuff.  It could be right there.
Thanks for the kind words RTJ.  It's been 6 1/2 years...somedays it seems like no time at all, other days it feels like I've been at this forever.  Still, the best thing I could have done!

Thanks for the advice biker jim! guinness brat sounds awesome.  I live in a town of 5000, we have one resturant, one bar and 2 sandwich shops. so there is not much ethnic stuff around...I wish.  But Im sure if I look in the surrounding area I might find something, but we dont have much.
