there's a little hamburg/hotdog stand in stratford, ct. they started serving real bbq about 2 years ago and have perfected it. they don't traditionally serve it with e slaw on top, but you can always ask for it... check it out!!! it's pretty darn good for a northern joint!

    Trust me.
Go to Uncle Willies on RT 1 on the West Haven/Orange line.
Believe they are also in Waterbuy. GREAT BBQ.

Wood's Pit Route 209 in Bantam is the best BBQ in CT. comparitively speaking, it makes Uncle Willy's cue taste like low-grade dog food.

Uncle Willies is really good Q. Cookshack isnt bad for mass produced stuff. There is also a small stand in a guys driveway in Meriden that is alright, his sauce is really good.

Red Spice & Blues Real Pit BBQ in Durham CT is a great place
to experience real barbeque. All meats are smoked for at
least 12 to 14 hours, servings are huge and prices are great.
They also serve fried seafood for the non-Barbeque fans.

Whereas I found Wood's to be completely underwhelming....not bad, but certainly not good....and have never been disappointed at Uncle Willie's....

                Dearfolk,
I've eaten at both Uncle Willie's in Waterbury and at Wood's in Bantam and - although both have their merits - I'd choose Uncle Willie's anytime. I tried a bit each of several things there, and never was disappointed.
There is another BBQ in Waterbury on Thomaston Avenue just off the main east-west thoroughfare (probably West Main Street... duuuh) and not far from the interchange with the expresswayed Connecticut highway through. Those folks are from Florida, so their food has a bit of a different character than does Uncle Willie's. I wish I could conjure up the name of the place, but it's been over 3 years ago since I was there.

                  Dearfolk,
I reply to my own post!
The place is R. B. & Big Daddy's Rib Shack at 201 Thomaston Avenue in Waterbury. By going to the map for Uncle Willie's, you can obtain other restaurant information; this will give you a map to R. B. and Big Daddy's.
                  Bon Appetit!

Red Spice & Blues BBQ is located at 16 Main St Durham Village Durham CT. If coming from the area of the Durham Fairgrounds head towards RT 79 77 junction. Look for Dairy Serve on your left. The Durham Village is just across the street. Red Spice is located on the second level of the plaza , drive down the driveway and to the right. The restaurant is the last storefront on the left, I am sure you will see it. They are closed Mondays, open Tues thru Thurs 11:30 to 7, Fri and Sat 11;30 to 8 and Sun 11:30 to 6 or so. They have been written up in the New Haven Register by Todd Lyons and just had a short article in the Luxury Living Section of this weeks New Haven Register. Hope you enjoy it Jan

Y'all stop this insanity. Did the carpet baggers learn something down here during "reconstruction" and try to duplicate it there? BBQ is as much about latitude as it is attitude. We don't do grinders or speedies down here.

Oh i'm from the hartford area and yesterday i ate at Little marks BIG barbaque in vernon ct, and was not impresed. the ribs are nothing spacial and the wipped potatos were runny. You also get a very small pice of corn bread.Just a heads up.

I am a native texan and BBQ lover, and I went to Uncle Willie's in Orange CT for the first time-- solid. Both it at Bobby Qs in Westport are doing quality BBQ in my opinion.

Not as good as the real thing down south, but both very good and both much better than what was around these parts 10 years ago...

                              Mr. Pig,
As much as I happen to L-O-V-E barbecue, I also get a hankerin' for a good sub upon occasion. Having been introduced to them by a trip to Connecticut, they are most enjoyable for a change of pace. I also love Cincinnati chili, Iowa-style loosemeat sandwiches, and real pork tenderloins, especially cooked and served Iowa-style. And don't forget the pea salad!
I know many restaurant employees who do trades with other establishments because they get so tired of eating the same food every day. I have to vary my routine foodwise or I get tired of eating.
There's room for most all of it here, although I surely do wish your place was closer to Athens, Georgia, so I could venture by and do some serious pigging out. I'm waist deep in pig withdrawal.
Y'all making me hungry, all y'all.

To all of you in Connecticut: Russells Ribs in Groton is the best. Not crazy but I think the ribs are the best in the state. Little Taste of Texas in Windsor or East Windsor is pretty good too.

A belated reply to my barbeque loving friends in Athens, GA, and a sad note to all fellow 'que lovers in CT:
Our best bbq joint in the state, Will Blandon's RB and Big Daddy's Rib Shack in Waterbury, is no more. Will "Big Daddy" and Rose "RB" and family have taken their barbeque magic, and, after fifteen years or so, left our fair state for , I believe, a return to their Florida roots. Connecticut is poorer for it. I missed the chance to say it, but goodbye, Will, Rose, Missy and Errol! There ain't no barbeque in Connecticut half as good, nor place half as friendly, as yours!
To que lovers out there-- keep your eyes peeled -- I'd love to know where the Rib Shack reopens (if it does). You may be in for a treat.

In the meantime, does anyone out there have a suggestion for a real barbeque joint to help me soothe the pains (stomach and otherwise) of this culinary loss?

To que lovers out there-- keep your eyes peeled -- I'd love to know where the Rib Shack reopens (if it does). You may be in for a treat.
In the meantime, does anyone out there have a suggestion for a real barbeque joint to help me soothe the pains (stomach and otherwise) of this culinary loss?

If it's any help to you or to anyone else, Big Daddy was from Arcadia, Florida - the seat of DeSoto County, awaaay down U. S. 17 in Florida's range cattle country. I'd imagine that they might have sojourned back there, tired of shovelling snow. Arcadia has about 6,500 people, so finding their place there can't be too difficult.

This is what I posted in the other thread about Jeff's Cuisine in South Norwalk:
Chef Jeff catered a party at mty house this past March and EVERYBODY was blown away by the food -catfish, pulled pork, memphis ribs, jambalaya, mac & cheese, cole slaw, bbq chicken, and the best corn bread you will ever eat.

If you're thinking of going, see if his crabcakes are on the Special menu -WOW.

"To all of you in Connecticut: Russells Ribs in Groton is the best. Not crazy but I think the ribs are the best in the state. "

Ive been to Russells and thought it was a fair at best tasting Q. There is no way the meat is slow cooked. Had to fight with the ribs to get what little meat was on the bones off. The greens were horrible too. Not worth the time it took me to get there.

this thread is more evidence to the fact that for all flavors of food, there are those who love it, and those that do not. there is a pallet for every food.
