bill voss See, with my East And west America idea, we could have TWO East Coasts. Beauty. Great Idea! That would mean you could get really good hot dogs, hot lobster rolls, fantastic pastrami, corned beef and knishes, along with apizza and softshell crabs in California, Oregon and Washington. And you could get dungeness crab, and Tillamook cheese along the eastern seaboard.

In southern Indiana I have heard them pronounced "TayKos" , However the times and demographics are changing !! When "The Big One" finally eliminates California, Indiana may wind up with some coastline as the Gulf Shore moves North !!

The old rule of thumb is if your on the coast eat seafood, if your in the heartland eat beef. Why would anyone think you would find a whole city with good Tacos on the East Coast. Be happy to find a good Mexican restaurant...................The Best tacos I have found are in Mexico, but if you want the second best just go to any boarder town. The farther you get from the boarder the worse it gets..............

I don't know that Philly can compare to some other cities overall in the taco department, but we've gone from essentially "nowhere" to having a thriving Mexican community and food scene in, oddly enough, the Italian Market area. There are a number of little Mexican restaurants in that area and I've had outstanding tacos at a couple. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I heard a while back that this started at least partially as a result of 9/11. The restaurant scene in NYC took such a big hit in those days that a few Mexican restaurant owners packed up shop and moved to Philly.

No idea how other cities comapre, but as phlmaestro has said, Philadelphia's 9th and Washington area now offers close to a dozen authentic taco options. There is also an elote lady I try to see at least once a week.

NYC, especially Brooklyn and Queens. Some great Mexican-dominant neighborhoods with superb food.

<<NYC, especially Brooklyn and Queens>> Definately just within the past 10 years. Before that there wasn't too much Mexican food in the boroughs. The Sunset Park section of Brooklyn is Taco Central. Just last weekend we ate at Tacos Matamoras on 5th Avenue and 46th street, and there must be at least 5 other taco places within that 2 block stretch of 5th avenue.

Surprisingly Martinsburg, WVa has a really good taco place. $1.75 will get you your choice of; Carne Asada, lingua, pork or cabezza(head meat) I'm not sure of my spelling. With salsa fresca, finely chopped onion, cilantro and fresh lime. Served on 2 corn tortillias. I can't remember the name of the place but it is on N Queen St right across from the Weis grocery and Tractor Supply.

I also like Tacos tres Reyes in MD just outside of DC. Sorry, I forget which town it is in. Near Lanham & New Carrollton. Do a Google search on the name and it will come up.

Considering the huge influx of Hispanic population in the last 20 years I'd say that the Atlanta metro area is probably the east coast taco town. There are as many Mexican restaurants here as their are barbeque joints or Waffle Houses. The best thing is, they are mostly mom and pop joints.

Hear "Large Man!" Along Roswell Road in the North, Buford Highway inside the perimeter, and Jonesboro Road in the South you will find a lot of taco stands, to say nothing of large areas in Gwinnett County. I don't see taco trucks but there are many stands. In fact, you can find very authentic and sympatico Mexican restaurants all across North Georgia. In addition the chains that used to be seen only in California such as Pollo Loco are now in the Atlanta area.
