better italian sausages

Howdy, I am looking for a tasty italian sausage that I can buy in bulk. I live in Florida and I have been buying my sausages from Sam's Club but have found them rather bland. They are Fontanini's and come with roated onions and peppers but, they cost me 1.77 per link. However, I have been selling them for 4.00 with a heeping of onions and peppers. I am infront of a Lowe's and want to keep my customers coming back. P.S. I offer both Sabretts and Hebrew Nat'l and find that more and more customers are requesting the Hebrew's- I too think they are better. Thanks Mike

Hell I buy my sausages from a Salumeria in the North End of Boston and salsiccia [sausage} is only about 3.oo a pound about 4 links to a pound. There is plenty of competiton in this area with many shops almost right next door to each other. There is a huge Italian community in Fla. there must be some place where you can get this a little cheaper and better quality do your homework. Chow Jim

LOL.... I have had niether , but it would be interesting to know the opinion of a person who has tried both Zweigles and Gianelli. I am partial to Leroux, but that doesn't keep me from looking for something better.

Sweigles is a hot dog company that also sells some sausage, Gianelli is a sausage company that sells, get this, sausage. One focus, and one better product.

Our local Publix has very tasty Italian sausage, at least the hot variaty, which is all I buy. Check on meat suppliers in the area, the one my wifes store uses, makes a unique blend of ground beef for LUBI'S. It's a lot of work but being able to offer a distinctive homemade sausage could be a big drawl...

One thing you have got to love is the fact the only on roadfood can a person take a simple subject and turn it in to a personal war meaning "I am right" and you are wrong" I am just having a bit of fun with you though but Zweigles Do Rule!

I'm just having a bit of fun right back. No hurt feelings on my end. (that's why the LOL and just kidding part) This Sweigles vs. Gianelli or Sweigles vs. Hofmann's is as old as the Rochester vs. Syracuse war. It's all in fun, I assure you. In fact, While I think Hofmann's coney is way better than sweigles, I like Sweigles red dog better than Hofmann's, so I know Sweigles is right up there. Of course, I like Meier and Ranz red dogs even better, but, that another story. And, I'm not swayed by Sweigles claim that they're a "sausage" company. Sweigles started out as a hot dog company. Their very first product was the white hot dog, it's what made them famous in Rochacha. They may try to pawn themselves off as a sausage company since hot dogs are encased and they dabble, even persistantly, in sausage making, but they'll always be a hot dog company in my mind. Gianelli is ONLY a sausage company. That was their first product, and that's all they've ever made (even though they're helping to sell "Dino BBQ sauce" on their website, but I can forgive that. I think we'd both agree that Dinosaur BBQ kicks a$$.) That said, it's not like I'd turn down a Sweigles hot dog OR sausage.

I'll second the Gianelli's recommendation. I also like Carmen Basilio's (presumably)out of Canastota. Its relatively lean and has a lot of black pepper. I recall the first time I ever had it, though...way back in the '70's...my dad bought it because he knew about Carmen's boxing career. We cooked it up and were left with a pan full of red fat...apparently they used a lot of fat, and colored it w/paprika to make it look more meat-like. Their sausage is way better now. Mostly, though, I prefer to make my own, I can control the fat, the spice, and the salt content.

So few people know of the Italian heritage from Canastota. It's something of a legend from the past. Utica, Whitesboro, Canastota, etc are nearly forgotten towns that held some of the greatest deli's, restaurants, diners of the past.

Right on with the fat and salt content control. I make a good Italian and cajun Boudan also. I had the pleasure of meeting and shaking Carmen Basilio's hand and used to live in Syracuse on Park St.(off Butternut) Some great deli's and the Roma bakery made bread & rolls to die for. Sorry to but in but you brought back some nice memories.

It closed a few years back..........They had the BEST german rye bread........ The meat market next door is still in operation tho. They still make and sell KILLER homemade German style sausages/kielbasa etc............... Now Webers rest. gets their bread from NY bakery. Not as good tho............. Sadly the only Danzers left is the one on Ainsley Dr. The Park St. one is/was a vietnam food place........ Gruens on Butternut St. closed a few years back. They had the BEST sauerbraten in town ! Webers resturant is still plugging along tho. and still run by the Weber family...........geo Since 1974. Went to Syracuse University actually college of forestry. Danzer's had a great rubin. I've been to Gruens. Only other bakery I remember was Butternut Bakery. Lots of good food memories from that area, Angotti's Italian cafe near Burnett Ave. and The Skillet. There was a Firehouse restaurant downtown but Dinosaur BBq was not there yet. I worked at the Evergreen Mart doing landscaping and always enjoyed going in Doug's (the working man's tavern) for a cold one and good sausage and horseradish.[|)]

Yea, Doug's had a large three sided bar, cold local brews on tap (Matt's)and served horsemeat sandwiches on Thursdays. The horseradish was in small crocks on the bar and was very potent. Good sense, made the beer flow!(and your eyes) My kielbasa I just made yesterday is in the smoker now and sometimes later this afternoon will be on a bun with some horseradish and mustard.
