bread pudding made with doughnuts Thu, 06/30/05 12:49 PM (permalink)
Bread pudding made with doughnuts was mentioned in a book that I read last week, but no recipe was given. I can probably experiment and come up with something good since I enjoy baking.....does anyone have any ideas or has anyone actually eaten this before? Thanks in advance, Laurie

Paula Deen featured such a recipe on her show on Food Network. I haven't tried it yet, but it sure looks good. The link is as follows:

    Good luck

thanks, I just found the same recipe when I was looking online.....I can always leave out the raisins ( I have an aversion to them), and I don't really know about using fruit cocktail, maybe I will use peaches, cherries or pineapple and coconut...thanks for the response...

Because Krispy Kreme donuts weren't sweet enough on their own?

In Idylwild, CA there is a bakery that makes a bread pudding from all of their leftover pastries. You never know what's going to be in your next bite.

          Talk about gooooooooooood!

Did anyone catch Jay Leno about a week ago , he had a Chef on (lives in Atlanta) who serves Hamburgers on grillled Krispy creme doughnuts as the buns.

I don't know about that one...

Well, I'm a Southern lady through and through, but I'm danged if I'm putting hamburgers on Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

I am a Georgia peach, and don't know about eating a hamburger sandwiched between a doughnut either, sorry I missed that on t.v. I will have to ask my family members about that, since they all live in the Atlanta area. If the doughnut was not glazed it might be okay...

Growing up, we ate bread pudding everytime mom had stale bread, doughnuts, cake, etc. Like Mar said, she used whatever was on hand.
bread pudding is an exceptional joy make with big chunks of raison bread and stollens.
I would suggest that you make sure the doughnuts are slighty stale, for best results. The harder suface of the stale pastry wil absorb more of your egg batter.
The traditional flavors for the batter are vanilla, nutmeg, cinnammon but not too much, and sugar.
Enjoy! This dessert lends itself to lots of happy experiementing.

i was going to comment on this, having eaten the best bread pudding in the world, but the idea of the krispy kreme, to say nothing of the fruit cocktail, makes me slightly ill.

my favorite bread puddings ---other then homemade--are all from Nawlins!! where there is always an abundance of that wonderful french baggette bread that gets fresh baked every four hours or so and tends to get stale fairly quickly --one that comes to mind --cant remember where it was--that was a bread pudding souffle---they made bread pudding in the standard manner then broke up the cooked pudding into very fine peices and folded it into well beaten sweetened egg whites--actually marangue batter---then rebaked it and served it warm with a sauce---its been since 1971 or 2 when i first had that and i can still taste it now!! I have made this at home with the addition of fresh peach peices and its wonderful!

The best bread pudding we ever had was on the American Queen riverboat. They made absolutely wonderfull fresh cinnamon rolls for breakfast every morning and one of the dessert offerings every night was bread pudding made from the leftover cinnamon rolls. They were almost worth the cost of the cruise by themselves.

I'm with you, Tiki. There is no other bread pudding, as far as I'm concerned. I think it's the humidity...or the hard sauce!

Although this is not a recipe for bread pudding, rather than start a new thread, I thought I would stick this Krispy Kreme recipe here.

The latest Krispy Kreme Newsletter quotes Patrick Ellis of Jacksonville, FL:

“I took some friends and family camping last weekend and we came up with an incredible treat using Krispy Kreme Original Glazed doughnuts. Take a marshmallow and stuff it into the middle of an Original Glazed doughnut. Skewer it and toast it over an open fire until the sugar bubbles and the marshmallow toasts. Pull it from the fire, let the sugar harden, the marshmallow cool and prepare for the most incredible thing you have ever experienced...........Adding chocolate will have to happen, no doubt! KK S-mores!..........It was a hit with the kids and the parents loved it too!“

Was this from Linda Howard's book To Die For? I was curious about it too! Great book by the way.

I just saw Goddess Paula make the bread pudding with Krispy Kreme doughtnuts. Now, generally I despise bread pudding but she seemed totally in love with it. Please Roadfooders, tell me if it is really that good.

                                              Fablerox,
I saw Paula stirring those Krispy Kreme chunks today also.I think I would substitute berries (blue and black) for the fruit cocktail.
She sure seemed to like that dish. The scene in the bakery where she loaded 20 Krispy Kremes into a box was a dandy also. She is indeed a woman after my own heart.

Krispy Kremes would never last long enough around here to get stale enough for bread pudding! The sandwich shop my wife runs, slices off the ends and top of the torpedo rolls when making the sandwichs, some of these are baked and sold as toasties along with a tub of cheddar cheese spread. Some she bringshome and I make bread pudding, both homemade style and quickie type with instant vanilla pudding, dried cherries or the like make a nice change from raisens when making the homemade type

I made that Krispy Kream donut recipe.....blechhhh! Very expensive to make, and soooooo sweet, it was almost like a huge donut candy bar then with the added fruit cocktail, blechhh it scared my kids when they felt those chunks that looked greenish. There are so many good recipes out there, but this one was not good to me. I actually read a book where this detective craved it so I found the recipe doing a google search and was so excited, then blechhh. I was sick for the whole day from all of the sugar.

Love the raisin thing, "twisted" hehhheee. I never thought of them that way but it is a great way to describe them. I remember as a kid, my mom would make "ants" on a log...raisins on top of peanut butter in a celery stick...I picked the "Ants" off:)
