chili cook off

I need suggestions on how to best run a chili cook off. Do I need to have an entry fee? What would be a reasonable prize? What kind of rules would I need? This will be something new for me, although I have seen others. Any suggestion would be greatly enjoyed. Thank you one and all. Bruce A

    Hey Bruce, check out the sites for CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) or ICS (International Chili Society). If you go by the CASI wbsite (www.chili.org), there is a whole lot of info that would help under the Resource link. ICS has a tab on the left side that reads "so you want to start a cookoff" (or something similar).

    Our town has a small cook off - here is a link to their web site with rules. This year they are adding a $25.00 entry fee that is returned when you show up, they had some no shows last year.

    Chiliman's suggested links are an excellent place to begin. Plenty of info, extensive rules, world qualifying competetions etc. Don't let these highly competetive events scare you off. Benefit from their detailed information and put together a cookoff which fits your community's needs and desires. Compare these sources w/ theedge's link. Look around, you'll what fits.

    I have found in my competition carreer that, like rouxdog said, putting it together for your own communities needs, leads to some great competitions. ICS comps tend to get very competitive because of all the money involved. CASI tends more toward the charity and comaradery(sp) aspect. But some locals can mesh the two aspects well, which is why I enjoy them also. If you are doing this for charity, then a small entry fee is resonable, if it's just for fun, then you could probably forgo.

    If I was going to start a chili cookoff in my neck of the woods, i'd run it by my rules which are, NO RULES ! Best tasting Chili wins !

    Bill, I'd sure have to disagree on that opinion. We had a great chili cook-off in Clovis, CA. for a number of years. They were many more around the valley.

    More questions and some good knowledge. I own a restaurant and we have a little celebration in late June in town. I get to use a portion of city property for a food court/beer garden this year and I am trying to do something that will benefit my business in the future. My thought was to draw some of the alumni from town to my place while they are home to visit. And since we are a family restaurant, something that familes could do during the day. Drinking at night comes naturally here and both blocks will be full of revelers on friday and saturday nights. We are planning on BBQ pork ribs, potato salad, and corn on the cob during the day, and a chili cookoff seemed like an extra something. Maybe just some country or blue grass during the day would be better since people use this time like a family reunion.

    bruce, I need to sleep on this before I respond. I get a different motivation for your interest to put on a chili cookoff than I did from your original post.

    Thanks for the input, but due to the timeing it now looks like the cook off idea is not going to work. I may still be able to do it in the future however, and any and all suggestion will be appreciated.

    Back home, a local bar always had a chili contest on Superbowl.
    They usually had about 30-40 entries.... Just a couple judges randomly picked from the crowd, and chili pots went by numbers.. so it was basically blind tasting and no one knew who's was who's....
    Then they also had a "crowd favorite" prize. They gave cash awards of $100, $50, and $25 to the top 3.
