comfort food

This is not road-food, this is home-food. It is Sat Night and the beautiful Mary Ann is away for the weekend. The problem is---what to eat to console myself. What comfort food, that won't take forever to prepare, will make me forget it is Sat Night and I am all alone--------------any suggestions?

Ok Jennifer #4 I give up----what are Sees ????? I decided to go back to my Dodger days-----Brooklyn Dodgers-----that is. When I was single and alone and poor. The only difference now is the Dodgers are in LA. Well I went to my favorite copy of Gourmet and put together a special dinner of franks and beans and kraut and 1/2 a nice fat half sour Kosher pickle ----washed down with a can of Schaeffer Beer. That beer used to be made in Brooklyn. It tasted better then because the water had more flavor in "Brook-a-lean". The Kiwanis canal added flavor that was not available anywhere else on earth. In a little while I should have a nice dish ah-fanilla ice cream.

It is not entirely a West Coast thing. My mom, who lives in Florida, loves See's which makes it easy for me on Mother's Day, her birthday and lots of other times. Have you ever tried their ridiculously expensive, but yummy, peanut brittle?

Do they have Sees stores in Florida or does she get it online? I was under the impression they didn't have it in the east...

I keep sending mom See's catalogs in hopes that one day she'll pick up the phone and order whatever she wants, but that hasn't happened yet. So far she just tells me what she wants--or says, "Gee I was thinking about that wonderful See's candy . . . ." and I usually then order it on-line, but sometimes I go down to one of the local stores have it sent. That, however, is risky because they give out free samples and I'm a chocoholic anyway, but I keep trying to recover.

See's tried to pull out of Houston a few years ago but the uproar was so great they cut a deal with Rice Epicurean Markets and now have 'boutiques' in all 5 Rice stores, which is probably more locations than they had stand-alone. Which reminds me, I haven't had any since last Christmas! Will have to try the brittle and the chocolate covered bar.

Chicken and dumplings or beans and cornbread always worked for me. These do take a little time to prepare, but well worth it! If your tired or in a rush just whip up some old fashioned Frito pie (extra cheese on top). These favorites don't hail from Brooklyn, but they'll still bring on that "warm and fuzzy" comfort of childhood...

I didn't see See when I was in Florida. I asked Mary if she saw See, Si said she---down by the sea I saw See. I see !!!!! Oh well anyhow thanks for all the good ideas, chicken and dumplings sounds like it would do the trick. Beans and cornbread was typical navy Saturday morning b'fast. Good stuff. Tonight I am gonna try that Eye-tral-yon Saus-each with peppers, on a roll. Does that go good with cheap canned beer????? Thanks to one and all. Bon appetit---u have to add the little gizmo over the "e" yourself, I don't know how to do that on this machine.

As I recall, when the minor-league Dodgers were in Brooklyn it was the Gowanus Canal. Your pal, the New York Giants fan.

Lets see now ---no more See, we are back to real food. BT, I've had saw-sech sam-itchs downtown and I had 'em in the Bronx too---and in Queens and even Staten Island, and a'course in Brook-a-lean where dey was probably the best. How about that !! Dey are great no matter where ya eat 'em especially washed down with a nice can of "Schaeffer, the one beer to have when your having more than one". Red Barber usta advertise Schaefer from the "cat berd seat" at Ebbets Field, Michael----remember him? I usta go to the games for a quarter. You cuda gone to the Polo Grounds for a quarter too, and get a saw-sech sam-itch on a roll---and watch Say Hey Willie play center. Although he wasn't as good as da Duke, but dey was both better than Mickey. I never did get my kicks on Route 11 though, only on Rte 66. I ended up with tru Brook-a-lean food ---------franks and beans and kraut. But then comes the best part---Mary got home just before dinner on Sunday and took me out for Corned Beef and Cabbage and some Sam Adams. What a treat. Caio, Bambinos.

Thanks Michael, of course you are right, the Kiwanis is a bunch of business men who meet once a week to discuss the problems of the world etc. over lunch. The Gowanus Canal just keeps rolling along, or was that the Mississippi. I always get those two mixed up. It is tough getting old.

OK BT I am finally getting around to saw-seach and Peppers and yunions on a roll. From the old joke from my youth --- Tonights The Night. I have been looking forward to it since I read your post. You had better be right, or else. There is a little place near me where they make their own Eye-trallion saw-seach on the premises. It is great, the peppers are from a neighbors garden (he doesn't know they are missing yet). The onions are from uppa state New York. I will get back to you with the results. Bon Appetit to me.
