concession hot dogs in the south Fri, 03/7/08 9:13 PM (permalink)
I'll be doing a few(not Many) events where I want to sell hot dogs. I'm in Alabama and I've seen nothing but the mass produced grocery store type dogs for sale.

What are my options?
Sysco or similar?
Order in bulk?

I won't be selling them often but when I do I would like to put out a step up from the grocery store.

Thanks

If you have a Costco, Sams Club, BJ's are similar type of membership food clubs they generally carry Sabretts and/or National Hebrew hotdogs in larger portion sized packs. (36 count). You can also buy buns in 18 count packages + every thing else yoy will need.

Birmingham should have speciality food suppliers that might carried these brands and the Vienna brand hotdog. Only problem is that they might require you to have a tax resale number.

Sam's has their cheap dogs and the oscar meyer and ziglar brands. The closest thing I've found to a festival type of dog is a skinless Nathan's dog at Target. Are those Nathan's any good? I haven't tried them yet.

      Thanks

Hightider. If you go to Sam's website, you should be able to order the dog of your choice. If they stock it in one of their close by warehouses, they'll deliver to your local outlet for next day pickup.
Also, check your distributors to see if they stock 'Kent Quality Meats'. These dogs are not available at the retail level, just bulk wholesale. But they are tasty! http://www.kentqualityfoods.com/

Nathan's is a good hotdog. I sold them last year at a high school baseball concession stand. I grilled them for a short time then put them on a hotdog roller machine. They taste similar to the Sabretts and are a natural casing hotdog.I sold them for $2.00 each. I am thinking about using Nathan's at a two day spring festival I am doing next month.I am going to soft boil them, throw them on the grill to mark them and serve them out of a steamer on a hot bun.

JodyP. Are you using the skinless or natural casing (NC) dog? In my neck of the woods, Nathans NC are next to impossible to find. As more people are learning and being educated about the 'snap', it seems the more they want a NC style dog. Also, we don't boil them, we just gently heat them to temp!

UncleVic. I use the natural casing. I think the snap is what sells them. Even at a high school concession stand I was selling them @ $2.00 each with no complaints. I am going to start cooking that way too, I downloaded a link from the forums on how to properly cook them. 180 degrees max, then if you like throw them on a grill for a short time to give them the grill marks. I am going to use a large electric roaster with water in the bottom to keep them hot till served.

I like Nathan's and Hebrew National.
See if you can find Usinger's anywhere.

Of course, you could just send for a Lucky Dog cart from New Orleans....heh...

I'm not really a hot dog coniseur but, I tried the Nathan's skinless and they were okay. I'll check out ordering from Sam's.

                  Thanks Guys
