corned beef and cabbage/price...onions? Fri, 03/13/09 10:54 AM (permalink)

Now that the big day is coming it will soon be time to have the debate...do you add onions to the corned beef, cabbage , potato & carrots? also what is the price in your neck of the woods- here it is 2.47  per pound which is higher than I remember

Our Cabbage heads at several local markets are $.29 a lb.  I cooked one up with some bullion cubes, cut-up onion and a ring of Kielbasa ($2.50/LB). No, it's not Irish, but it sure was good!
Lots of Corned Beef Chunks here at $1.99-$2.25 a lb.

2.47 sounds about right, add onions to everything, IMHO.

I like to buy Freirich Corned Beef, the rectangular cut, I'm getting it this weekend at $2.99lb.  I put it in a big pan with water, cover it and BAKE it.  It needs water, lots of it, but I like to bake it low, 325F for 4-5 hours.

Lots of pickling spice and GARLIC.

I boil up red potatoes, garlic, onions and cabbage, CARROTS all together in a seperate pot with a few bags of chicken bouillion and caraway seeds too.
Some good quality grainy mustard and McSorley's ale, what a night.....In NY, St. Patricks Day is a party....

Oh, the green cabbage is .19 a pound.

I haven't noticed corned beef prices this year. I took one out of the freezer to thaw, so I haven't had to check. I don't usually put onions in with the potatoes, carrots and cabbage, but there's no reason not to toss in a few whole, peeled, medium-size onions. I do that when I make pot roast.

The other night I picked up a Bea's brand (Chicago-based, IIRC) corned beef point for $1.79 a pound.  Didn't see any flats and the rounds were $3.29.

I like it cooked all day in the crockpot with the setting on low.  Just add enough water to cover and the spice packet, nothing else.

I'm not a cabbage eater and if I'm going to have a potato I'd much rather have baked instead of boiled.

I put Onions on my cereal so you know it's going in the Crockpot with the Corned Beef, along with Carrots, Celery & some Beef Broth. I add the Cabbage in the later stages so it still has a little body when done.
Bought a Colorado Premium Brand  Flat Cut CB Briskit @ Fresh & Easy for $2.29#. Have seen them as low as $1.29 other places.

I've bought everything Wednesday night, corned beef flats for $2.29.  I put corned beef and spice contents in a large pot, cook until tender.  I then cut up my cabbage in medium to large chunks and spread in the bottom of a large electric skillet, on top of that a layer of onions, a layer of small creamer red potatoes, and a layer of baby carrots.  Remove the corned beef from cooking liquid and cover lightly, strain cooking liquid and pour over vegetables, cover and cook until tender.  Place sliced corned beef along the top of veggies and serve.  EASY clean up!

The average grocery store price for corned beef here in NE PA today was $1.99/lb. for flats and $2.99 for rounds.  One store had point cuts @ .99/lb.

Cabbage ranged from .19 to .25/lb.  I didn't buy any corned beef because my neighbor will be giving me his leftovers but I stocked up on cabbage.

A local grocery store has corned beef at $1.89 lb.Cabbage at 29 cents. Will stock up on the corned beef. I never have anything in the pot but the corned beef and cabbage, with potatoes in a different pot.Thats how Grandma Kelley served it, and I guess thats why I do it that way.

These are the prices of corned beef and cabbage where I live:
Thin cut corned beef per pound prices:
                      Reddi Gourmet - $1.89
                      Freirich – $1.99
I bought one of each and am soaking and rinsing them in preparation of making them into pastrami.
Thick cut corned beef price per pound:
                      Old Fashioned - $.98
                      Freirich - $.98
I think I’ll buy one of each tomorrow and jam them in the freezer for smoking in the summer. (I might have to throw out some bait)

The price of cabbage at all local supermarkets is $.09 per pound.

I cooked a corned beef the other night and it was faboo.  I paid $1.79 a pound and I didn't cook carrots or onions with it.   The cabbage was 4lbs for $1.00, so 0.25 a pound.

I decided to cook it today. Put a Crockpot Liner bag in the pot - boy do they make cleanup easy. Put carrots & celery on the bottom of the Crockpot. Put in the beef- fat side up. Added 2 cans of Beef Broth plus enough water to cover. Cut large pieces of a whole onion & layed on top. Added spicepacket that came with it plus a good dose of Pickling Spice to give it a good aroma while cooking. The Bride doesn't like the smell of corned beef cooking by itself. I'll steam some Cabbage on Tuesday and enjoy the Day.

I bought a couple corned beef rounds for $3.17 per pound, it looked much better than the briskets, which seemed incredibly fatty.  I know brisket is more traditional, but I'm going a bit healthier....if you cook it low and slow, it's pretty good.

                              cabbage was .26 per pound.

We'll have one of the rounds on Tuesday, the other, in a month or so.

WM has the points for 99 cents a lb and cabbage at 19 cents. I bought 8 heads of cabbage and 10 points. They freeze really well. I have a 4 lb point cooking right now.
