US 58 will take you through Hillsville VA ( just north of Mount Airy NC ) and my recommendation there is the Hillsville Diner on N. Main Street ( US 52. ) It's only open for breakfast and lunch ( closed on Sunday, I think ), but the food's pretty good. Certainly better than anything that you'll get at a chain restaurant. BTW, if you spot Aunt Bea's Barbecue on Main St., don't go looking for good food in there. Their "que" is awful.

Mary's Diner in Danville, VA is excellent - think they are open 7 days a week. A little bit off Hwy 58.

I hope I'm not too late to help. On old 58 (not the bypass) at South Hill there is a place called Wilson's Barbeque. The Q (especially the sliced) is very good, but I love the vegetables. They are right next door to a farm stand and everything is totally fresh and well prepared. I love the place.

Boy, US 58, one of my favorite roads!! The only place I can think of off hand is a little burger/ice cream joint in Damascus, VA. Can't recall the name, but it's right at a point in town where the road makes a 90deg turn. Pretty cool little joint.
