existential definition of pizza... Fri, 03/28/08 8:48 PM (permalink)
In honor of Papajoe, I ask:
What is Pizza?

Tomato/sauce? No, what about white pizza?
Cheese? No. Many NewAge pizza does not have cheese.
Bread? Well, what kind? Pizza dough? What about French Bread pizza? English muffin pizza?
Shape? Cirlce? What about sicilian pizza?
Slice? Full pie?
Thick? Thin?

So many varieties so I ask

What is the essence of pizza?
(and the meaning if life while yr at it...)

    Thanks NYNM! And, good questions.

I think we DO need a definition. Everytime someone here at Roadfood suggests a different kind of pizza, someone else says that it is not a pizza. Sooo, what is a pizza? Let's settle this once and for all!

Life? Does it have a meaning... is the first thing we need to determine. :~)

      Stuff on flatbread.

Anything else, someone will come up with an exception.

To paraphrase Justice Potter Stewart,"I'll know pizza when I see it".

I just know someone will claim pizza should never have ketchup on it.

I came across this which seems OK to me:

A flat yeasted bread topped with a variety of toppings, commonly including tomato sauce, cheese, meats, and vegetables

I have frequently eaten pizza with ketchup and french fries on it and it is delicious!

Pizza is whatever I make. I will only go as far as to say it should start out as a dough ball of flour, salt, water and yeast. After that, whatever comes from humankind's mind can be pizza with the exception maybe of ketchup which we all know goes on hotdogs and has too much sugar.

                LOL Davy!

Billy, that french fry pizza sounds almost as good as mac n cheexe pizza.

Don, there is a real popular flat bread pizza place somewhere. And there is info about it somewhere here at roadfood.

Perhaps this should be a new thread, but then again perhaps not. If it were a new thread the question would be what was your first experience with pizza? I remember mine although it was over 50 years ago.

My Uncle Ed a WWII vet came home with a beautiful Italian war bride and so we went to visit and have dinner. The dinner was pizza, something unheard of before in our rural community.
They lived on the third floor of an apartment, something else my four year old eyes had never seen before. My aunt was wonderful and presented before us something called a pizza pie.

I remember it well. It was simple but delicious and consisted of a remarkable thin crust which had some bite to it, yet melted in your mouth. There was a very thin but rich layer of tomato sauce, topped with cheese. To this day I have not had its equal. I don't think I ever will.

I think, having read several books on my favorite food...a definitive definition is almost impossible, given the many ingredients and variations on the theme.

In honor of your wonderful post and my love of pizza from metro NY I offer a great doo wop classic by Norman Fox and the Rob Roys entitled "Pizza Pie" (1959):
