I like a nice salt crusted baked potato with real butter and sour cream, then either steamed brocolli or steamed asparagas on the side.

Those are my favorites, but I will take most anything such as corn on the cob and/or a nice garden salad.

A nice red wine or a nice cold beer too !

A baked potato is mandatory. a bit of butter only, please, with some sea salt and cracked pepper. As your steak juices accumulate on your plate, use the potato to sop them up.

I've also got one of those perforated grill wok things, and I really enjoy mushrooms, onions, and various colors of bell peppers given the treatment before I throw the steak on. Sometimes I toss in a couple grape tomatoes to warm through at the last minute. Season the vegatables with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt and cracked pepper. Maybe even a small splash of balsamic vinegar.

A baked onion. I hollow out a hole in the top of an onion, stuff in a builliion cube, fill the hole with butter, wrap in foil and bake or cook on a grill until soft. Low carb sub for baked potato.

Sauteed mushrooms on the side and greens like radicchio and the like.

I've gotten into salads with steak ever since going to The Red Star in Fells Point (Baltimore, MD) and ordered their steak salad - Grilled marinated flank steak with mushrooms, sweet roasted onions, and grape tomatoes over chopped greens with a balsamic herbed vinaigrette finished with shaved regiano cheese.
It's quite good. I get mine medium rare.

A small baked spud with butter, salt and pepper or corn on the cob in season are my favorite choices. I also love steamed green beans with a touch of butter or yellow squash with a sprinkle of pepper. A salad is good too. I like mine with oil and red wine vinegar, s&p and a few curls of parm-reggiano cheese.

Mushrooms, frizzled onions and the mandatory baked potato...butter only. No sour cream on my baked potato, Mom!

I also don't particularly like cheesecake, but then that's a whole 'nother thread.

When I worked in a (fairly high-end) restaurant kitchen in the late 60's,we would serve a baked potato that came in boxes labelled "Idaho Chef's Special".They were big, probably twice as big as the ordinary Idaho and they required a long baking time.We never cooked them in foil. They were full of potato flavor and didnt need to be "loaded" to be filling.
In my restaurant visits in the last 20 years I dont see these wonderful specimens anymore.I would expect them to only be at the big league steakhouses, served a la carte and expensive, but even at those venues the potatoes I have gotten have been considerably smaller and fairly tasteless.
Question is,have these potatos disappeared or am i just not looking for them in the right places? Did they become uneconomical due to their expense or cook time requirement?

Hello All,
I like mashed potatoes, with a spoonful of corn on top of the taters, with lots of pepper sprinkled on top.
Something about the combinations of flavors and textures of steak and mashed potatoes that comforts my soul.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

My husband makes great oven-roasted asparagus that goes great with steaks. Last night we had ribeyes and I sauteed sliced mushrooms in olive oil and butter with a whole lot of diced fresh garlic. That's what we usually have when asparagus is not in season.

The best steak meal I have ever eaten was at Peter Luger's, and I try to replicate whenever I can. If hash brown potatoes are available, they are first choice. If not, (garlic?) mashed will do -- although I am not partial to the skin-on mashed that seem to be gaining popularity. It seems like the chef is trying to cut corners by not peeling the potatoes. Fresh brocoli should accompany, when available. A good cab to wash it down surely wouldn't hurt.

I love a good baked potato with butter, sour cream, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, bacon bits and lots of salt. Also, a ton of sauteed onions and mushrooms with a splash of burgundy and a side of creamed spinach.

We've been grilling asparagus lately. drizzle olive oil and throw some salt on it, and then grill it- after removing it, throw some balsamic on it.

I like my steak best with a fresh cold crisp summer salad of onions, tomatoes, cucumbers and dill marinated in apple vinegar. And, of course, a grilled ear of sweet corn. Also, lots of Worcestershire or A1 sauce. Don't forget the beer in a frosted mug!

That sounds absolutely divine!

Potatoes are an absolute must with steak. Either a baked potato (as described above), creamy mashed potatoes with butter, salt, and a sprinkling of pepper, or steak fries with (minimal) ketchup.

Depending on what is in the fridge, my favorite steak sides at home are usually sauteed asparagus in garlic and lemon juice, or corn on the cob. When dining out or in the winter, baked potato and sauteed mushrooms.

I also love a nice salad, but since that is eaten long before the steak arrives, I don't consider it a side.

I agree with berndog on the Mushrooms, I enjoy the fight that ****akes put up due to their more meaty texture. However with Steak, my favourite side is a good Picallili. Picallili is so delicious, if it wasn't so blatently ridiculous, I'd eat it by itself quite happily.

old no.7-Now that it's been revealed that your from across the pond, I have to ask, is Picallili the same at your end as it is at ours? Round here Picallili refers to a minced sweet pickle relish with a variety of spices added (mustard seed, dill, etc.). Welcome to Roadfood buckaroo.

For me it would be a well done baked potato. I like them a little extra done where the skin is think and just a little crusty. I also like mushrooms with steak! If the place offers a stir fry I may try it also.

Broccoli rabe sauteed in olive oil with garlic & red pepper flakes in the winter. Large asparagus in the spring. Arugula with a lemon vinaigrette in the summer, with the arugula serving as a bed for sliced sirloin & the beef juice augmenting the vinaigrette.

Cauliflower? Really? See when I said "sweet pickle relish", I literally meant pickle as in a small cucumber like vegetable. As in dill pickle, only sweet and minced up. Cauliflower and other vegetables sounds like your picallili might be a sweet version of our giardinierre (sp?). Interesting. Any brand names we could look up on the internet for purchase?
