fire codes Thu, 10/8/09 12:12 AM (permalink)
i am fixing to start my 3rd year in march and i have read alot about fire codes and fire supression systems , but was wondering if anybody has advice or experience with this in kentucky or indiana,   maybe its just me, but i have never had a problem with any fire codes,  i operate out of a tent and use electric fryer and have a fire extinguisher and maybe because i do the smaller town festivals i just dont have the problems like a lot of other vendors are having with fire codes etc..., but i am thinking about building a flashy stick joint for next season to sell elephant ears out of and just checking to see whats information is out there

I use an open flame (charcoal grill) on the city streets here.  Just needed an open flame permit, ash can, and a fire extinguisher.

For others can you tell more. By stick joint,do you mean  permanent place or trailer. What kind of equipment. Bigger fryers, or small counter top elec fryers.

Check with each and every HD your going to encounter. Because you'll find many have different codes. And yes that sucks but that's the way it works. No one here will know the requirements of any HD except those that are in the venue they work.

Most likely, once you have a permanent location, all the codes change. They get stricter on permanent than they do temp (ie......fairs). In "our" local county we can get around that by closing one month out of the year & still be considered a temporary concession stand. January seems a good month to close because of the cold. It just took a quick visit to the city codes dept & talking to the local HD to find this out. Typically, brick & mortar locations are harsher in the regs.
