from NY to Montreal Mon, 11/1/10 2:35 PM (permalink)
We are driving from Staten Island, NY to Montreal.  We are leaving on a Wednesday morning.  Need to be in Montreal the next day.  We're up for four hours of driving on Wednesday, and no more than four hours of driving on Thursday.  We plan on hitting Louis' Lunch in New Haven.  The route we're looking at is I-91 straight up, then hitting I-89 around Lebanon, NH.  Good idea?  bad idea?  Are we better off going to Louis' Lunch (my partner is determined to eat there) and then heading west to Saratoga??

thoughts, my fellow roadfood eaters?

From Staten Island to Montreal ----- I can not imagine why you would head toward Conn.  I would think you would go straight up the NY thruway to the Northway.  New Haven is way out of the way----especially just for lunch.

Just checked Googlemap and they recommended the Thruway/northway also---7 hours straight north.  Unless you get snowed in.

I am an hour east on city on LI and I made it in 7hrs a couple of months ago, so I am thinking 6 with a straight run north from Staten Island. Eat when you get there!

We were planning on going through Connecticut because my partner has been DYING to eat at Louis's Lunch (and several hot dog places in that area), and it only adds about an hour to the trip, so we figured we'd just continue up 91.  We're never really up that way, so I gave in!

You'll add a few hours to trip going that way, but a couple of my favorites that are a short distance off i-91 in Massachusetts are:

Ditto for sure on White Hut and Nick's Nest ... Local favorites, though I've heard first-timers say they don't "get it."

Very true Greg, especially Nick's Nest. Gotta love the history there...and the White Hut as well.

Another short detour off I-91 and a genuine one of a kind roadfood stop is...

                  Ted's

It is another place some love, some hate. Count me as a lover.

If I were you-------I would make a seperate trip to Ct.  It will take you
miles out of the wAY, AND THE TRIP IS AWFUL.  Take a weekend to Ct in the spring---go to Mystic and visit the quaint towns up that-a-way.

Plenty of great places to eat in Montreal.  EH !!!!

Agree with Ancient Mariner. Heading up I-87 is the easiest way to go from Staten Island to Montreal.

That said, here's an idea: Take I-91 North TO Montreal, and then take I-87 South FROM Montreal back home.  Compromise!

I'll second the recommendation to stop in Northampton, MA.  Also Ted's or White Hut.

If you're taking I-87, you could always stop in Glens Falls for a hot dog or 3:

Also, just north of Glens Falls, off Exit 25 (not Exit 24 as previously written) of I-87, in Chestertown, is a great little place for Italian or Steaks - "The Place":

The Italian food there is superb.  Great basic red-sauce favorites (Manicotti, Lasagna, Chicken/Veal/Eggplant Parmagiana, etc.).  The sauce is superb.
