frozen custard

And, while I'm going on......... In Rochester, NY, where I grew up, there's nothing like Abbott's frozen custard down by the beach. I've tried making a replicate, and I'm a professional chef, but I haven't quite got it. Wish you could get their recipe.

Ugh Thanks a LOT. Now I want an Abbott's. When I moved to Syracuse, I was thrilled to find an Abbott's outlet!! It's *good*, but none of the satellites (Fairport, Syracuse, etc) taste quite as good as the Lake Ave location. I know it doesn't make sense, but it's true. I know POSITIVELY that baked goods will vary from location to location because of the humidity, water, ovens etc. Might it be the same with frozen custard production or any other food preparation?

Terroir in frozen custard! Seems more likely it's something like employee training; the further from the main office, the less supervision... As to making frozen custard at home, could be a challenge. Rival made a soft-serve home machine for a while that looks a bit like the Taylor freezers. I actually have one that I bought at Value City for like $12 that I've never tried. The recipes with it are more like regular homemade ice cream, but most old cookbooks have some custard-based ice cream recipes that could work.

tjr, As I enjoyed a sandwich today at the Corydon Culver's, The owner mentioned to me that Culver's is making their move into Kentucky ! He said that a new store is in the works for Hurstbourne Lane (not sure which side of I-64)...and TWO in the Lexington area. I will keep an eye out for the Louisville store. I do think the custard there is as good as any available in Kentuckiana!

There is a frozen custard place in Freeport, Maine. They close in October, but reopen for 3 days at Thanksgiving time to sell their Pumpkin Pie custard. It was very very good.

Al, Thanks for the heads up about Culver's. Looks like they've already got the location for one of the Lexington stores, Hamburg Place. There's not a whole lot of space for new drive-thru style stores on Hurstbourne except maybe way south by Meijer. Or maybe it'll be up by the new hospital and Costco, near the new Red Robin. As to being the best in Kentuckiana, probably true but ain't saying all that much. Actually I've enjoyed Zesto more than the frozen custard places we've got now, but at least Culver's has special flavors so that's a big plus.

We enjoy Culver's here, but my favorite frozen custard back home is a St. Louis tradition: Ted Drewes--absolutely delicious! Maybe because I can only get it on visits back home, but it seems special to me.

I believe Kopps ships, but it's expensive. See www.kopps.com for details.
