giant squid Fri, 03/6/09 5:54 PM (permalink)
there's a store in albuquerque called talin which has food from all over the world. their seafood is great. lately i've seen giant, and i mean HUGE squid
but have no idea how to prepare it. the suckers are usually over a foot long and just as wide. any suggestions would be appreciated. i would ask the guy behind the counter but he doesn't speak English. i can't figure out WHAT language he uses.  thank you.

I think that the squid is cut into 'steaks' and tenderized to heck. I remember eating calamari steaks on the west coast that were usually 4 oz in weight.  It can be known as mock abalone.  Dip in egg and saute, finish with wine, lemon and butter. If you bread it, you can also make a great sandwich with it.

Get used to it. The giant squid are actually taking over:

They once served Wooly Mammoth steaks at a restaurant in NYC... back in tha 20s. It was chopped out of a glacier. Wish I had been there!

Only one giant squid has ever been captured alive! Or... maybe it had just died recently?

Those are Humboltd Squid Xannie. You don't want to meet up w/ one of those while your swimming!!! :~)

Oh... I'll have mine w/ lettuce and tomatoes, Henze 57.. and frinch fried potatoes. A big cosure pickle and a cold draft beer. Good god almighty... that sounds good to me!

doggydaddy, you are correct, it's called humboldt squid.
i tenderized the bejeezus out of it and the hubster said"good eating"  then again, he's a fisherman and has never eaten anything he didn't catch that wasn't good eating.

papajoe, that's the reason i gave up swimming back in the 70's in corpus. never knew what was nibbling on my ankles.

Lol Xannie, it wasn't a squid. They don't nibble! They BITE! Even the small ones. One about a foot long took a thumbnail size chunk outa me. That's why I love Calamari so much. I'm trying to get even. :~)
                Joe

They don't hang out in the surf though.

Slice thin like fettuccini and then flash fry at 400 degrees in peanut oil and then dip in your favorite sauce.
                      calamari extraordinare!!!

Yea, me.  Just off Eureka, CA in 2006..  The body was about a foot long or so, and I still have a nickle sized white scar and divit on the back of my left arm where the #&%$* got me. I blame my ex-wife for chumming.  To add insult to injury, after dining on my tricept, it took off dousing me in a coud of ink.  I like to think that I punched it, but in all honestly I think I just peed in the ocean while crying.

I have since declared war on squidkind and order calamari whenever I find it on the menu.  I now refer to this as Squidegeddon, and victory shall be mine.
