good places to eat in Santa Cruz??? Mon, 12/3/07 1:04 PM (permalink)
I just moved to Santa Cruz & I eat out pretty much every day. I love Mexican food but I’m tired of getting greasy burritos from random, cheap taquerias? Where can I find some high quality Spanish / Mexican food?

Have you tried the New Leaf Community Market?

Not necessarily for Spanish/Mexican ... it might be a viable alternative.

Most of the taquerias around here are disappointing, but have you tried El Palomar Taco Bar?

I have not been there recently, but Manuel's in Aptos is well regarded.

My brother-in-law is now a Banana Slug alum, and this is what he suggests:

"I'd say the best taqueria to eat at is Taqueria Santa Cruz. There are two, one is on Mission St. near Safeway and the other is on Soquel, south of downtown. Try the Super Shrimp Burrito, it's excellent. My favorite sit-down Mexican is Tampico, which is on Pacific St. next to the bus station. I've also heard that El Palomar is pretty good, which is also on Pacific, but I never ate there. For really good Brazilian lunch and dinner, try Cafe Brazil on Mission St. east of Bay. They also have vegetarian options, as do most places in Santa Cruz. Good luck!"

Both the taco bar and the restaurant at El Palomar are good. Taqueria Vallarta is our favorite taqueria although I also like Tacos Morenos and have heard that La Cabana is great.

Palapas was excellent last time I was there but that was long ago.

However, for the best authentic Mexican food, best to go to Watsonville.

Cilantros and Jalisco were excellent when i worked down there.

I don't know of any Spanish restaurants around.

            Cheers,

            Bhorn

Also a good absolutely NO atmophere Chinese by the theatres in Scotts Valley...also great value$$$. Scopazzi's in Boulder Creek is great...and the Redwood Keg liquor store puts out a mean Tri-tip sandwich in their deli...and the Red Pearl has good Chinese take out.

                Soquel, CA (831) 476-3801
                http://www.cafecruz.com/

If you are going to go to Watsonville according to locals Carnitas Trejo is by far one of the best places for great Mexican food. Also the Super Taqueria chain are great for tacos and burritos. Closest is in Watsonville.

                Carnitas Trejo
                370 E Lake Ave
                Watsonville, CA (831) 768-8863

Up Hwy 17 in Scotts Valley for Mexican:

                Cafe Carlos
                6016 Scotts Valley Dr
                Scotts Valley, CA 95066
(It's behind the Chevron Station and Scotts Valley Diner (ex-Dennys)

                for Chinese:

                Abc Chinese Restaurant
                219 Mount Hermon Rd # A2
                Scotts Valley, CA (831) 438-3406

The Scotts Valley Market has an excellent food buffet. The food is outstanding. There is BBQ, Chinese, Mexican, salads of all types, home cooking style dishes, sandwiches, etc.

                Scotts Valley Market
                14 Victor Square
(It is actually on Scotts Valley Drive where Wendy's and Starbuck's are located)
                Scotts Valley, CA (831) 438-4324

While we're on Santa Cruz food...

Bakeries- there are several very good bakeries in this area.

Kelly's French Bakery (Excellent pastries and sandwiches plus they serve Peet's coffee)
                402 Ingalls St.
                Santa Cruz, CA (831) 423-9059

Speaking of Peet's ...a Peet's Coffee & Tea will have very good pastries. They are as good or better than any bakery's and unless it is the end of the day or the end piece of a (zucchini, banana, pumpkin) bread loaf it is all very fresh. There is a Peet's in Scotts Valley (214 Mt Hermon Rd.) Santa Cruz (1409 Pacific Ave.) and Capitola (819 Bay Ave.).

                Beckmann's (Excellent turnovers and breads)
                2341 Mission St.
                Santa Cruz, CA (831) 423-2566

The Buttery (Excellent cakes, added sandwich deli, IMO they overcook their pastries though)
                702 Soquel Ave.
                Santa Cruz, CA (831) 458-3020

                Aldo's (Excellent breads and pastries)
                4628 Soquel Dr.
                Soquel, CA (831) 476-3470

If you like PIE look for Gizdich Ranch pies at Shopper's Corner, Sunnyside Produce and Deluxe Foods. Or at Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville

                Shopper's Corner
                622 Soquel Ave.
                Santa Cruz, CA (831) 423-1398

                Sunnyside Produce
                2520 S Main St.
                Soquel, CA (831) 476-8904

My daughter just moved to Santa Cruz as well. She's at a place called the Crows Nest. It's not Mexican/Spanish, but you might give it a try.

Stumbled upon this fun Hawaiian plate lunch place with great atmosphere and plenty of locals dropping by last time I was in Santa Cruz...

Not in Santa Cruz and not Mexican, but north on Highway 1 and hang a right, you'll find Duarte's Tavern: http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx?ReviewID=214&RefID=214

Its cream of green chile soup is to die for, and, IMO, you can't go wrong with the rest of the menu, breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Homemade roadfood at its finest. The drive up is pleasant too.

Use the restaurant, not tavern entrance.
