The Ground Round in COmmack New York shut down a few weeks ago- it looks like they're doing major renovations inside- I have no idea what will open there- I dont know about the other Ground Rounds on Long Island/

Garry, I can vouch for the one on Springboro Pike (OH 741) near the Dayton Mall on the east side of the highway. There was a Ground Round restaurant, but it became an Atlanta Bread Company restaurant.

That was the only Dayton location of which I was aware; there might be one in Cincinnati still.

the above is actually a list of Ground Rounds still open. The company has been taken over by a group of its surviving franchises who have banded together . Sort of a reversal of the normal corporate franchising model where the paerent company creates the franchises.
Ate at the one in Allentown recently (we had a gift certificate). The food hasn't changed that I can tell- typical mediocre mid-range casual eatery fare. I can get better food more cheaply at many independents (and worse food at some other independents).

There used to be one in Parkville, northeast of Baltimore. It's been gone for several years, though. We used to live nearby, and visited twice, I think. It was . . . okay. brookquarry says "mediocre." That sounds about right. Not only did it close, but the entire building was removed. Down to a few pipes poking out of the patch of dirt in the middle of the parking lot. Been like that for a few years now.

One of the remaining ones in Maryland is the one at the Fredericktown Mall in Frederick. We've had one meal there, and were very disappointed. Everything was overdone and very very greasy. (Not in a good way, either.) We haven't been back.

Does anybody know how Ground Round got its start?

I have it in my mind that it evolved somehow from Howard Johnson's.

I use to enjoy Ground Round so much. Several of them were located close to our phamaceutical locations and they were fun to go after a hard day for a drink, play the pinball machine, get a burger, have a drink and enjoy the salted peanuts in a shell. I sincerely hate to see them go down the tube. I hope they make it.

ground round was Howard Johnsons attempt to enter the (then new) casual eatery market. When they first opened, I actually thought they were pretty good- a step above diners and a quicker meal than more upscale places. I believe the chain suffered from the parents decline. i was spun off or sold. In recent decades the franchises by us (Aleentown, Bethlehem) have been pretty mediocre- little differant from Applebees or Chili's.
