hojo clam dog

Not sure if hojo's have restaurants anymore. We used to have one that had a clam dog on a toasted bun. It was fried clams on a bun.

We remember them well. Our boys practically lived on them on several roadtrips many years ago.

    cheers, John

Not to drift too much but I lived on their "rusty" (my term for them when I was a munchken) hot dogs when on road trips. No more HoJo's in NC that I have seen lately, all Chinese buffets now.

Thirty years ago HoJo and Marriott were about the same size...management does make a difference.

The menu item was called a 'Clam Roll'. 2 oz of clam strips, battered and fried inserted into a N E Style (top-cut) Frankfurt roll that was buttered and grilled prior to being 'filled' with the hot Clams. There was no reference to Hot Dogs in any of the descriptors or menu-listings in the New England area back when I was 'stuffing' them!! (mid-1960's)

    Al,
I still go by the old HoJo building in Hickory, NC when going through the area. Now a Chinese buffet but I was kidded about my reference to their hot dogs as "rusty" all my life. They were simply well done on a grill or in a fryer and not boiled.

As I travel I always recognize the old HoJo's...that orange tile roof. Can't remember seeing one still doing business as a HoJo though.

Yeah that building shape...like the Stuckey's chain of candy and roadside stops can be found all over the country. I haven't seen an active Orange Roof in years, but someone raised the question about a 'restart' of the HoJo ice cream line a short time back.

We always grilled the Franfurts in real Butter... Tossing them in the deep fryer was a real no-no...but I worked at a Company store, not a franchiser. (Rt 95 Northbound, Rowley,Mass)'63-'65

    Yea, Stuckey's and pecan rolls.

The Stuckey's building in Blacksburg, SC beside I-85 is now a pornographic book store. How things change. Same exit as the Milliken Magnolia plant, have to giggle when I exit. I'm sure it pisses off Roger Milliken when he visits.
