    Hello All,
    Shelly, you are not alone.
The whole earth and all its beings
are bound in this uncomfortable transition.
I wish you luck, patience, and prosperity.
As Ringo sang, "It don't come easy..."
But I hope all your work and efforts are
    joyful and prosperous.

Yep... funny how yesterday was cold and dreary... and tomorrow will be nearly 100 (typical New England weather here)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. I nearly ran out of Gatorade and water last week when it was only in the high 70s.... will make a killing tomorrow!!!

And as far as personal comfort... hope you have one of those battery-operated spray fans with you. If you had a gross of them, you could sell those too!!!

Keep cool, and keep your meds nearby too for that COPD!

Well, i made it!!! And not a bad day i must say. I did bring extra ice and yes i did sell alot of drinks. I would have helped if my exhaust fan would have worked!!! Maybe someone knows what i am doing wrong with that..... It runs off a marine battery. Which i bought a brand new one because my last one was giving me sooo much trouble and now i am having problems already!!! Anyone have any suggestions?? My worry about today would be the bad lungs, but i was okay and since there will be days i won't breath well, i decided i better pick my days off carefully and as i said.... I made it!!!
I am now going to clean the grease off my body. Hope you all are keeping cool.

Oh and i didn't even have to use my inhaler when i was out!!! That really surprised me.

Look for a deep cycle battery and don't discharge more than 50%. Discharging batteries down to nothing will ruin them and they won't come up to a full charge. Look at Northern Tools for a generator or several batteries and hook them up parrell. With the sun out full blaze solar panels will help with keeping the battery up to charge. Cold wet towel around the neck will help alot. Of course drink alot of water. Saving for a generator will get you power for exhaust, fans. Any questions or problems email me. If you want to stay with using battery power, join 12VDC Power http://groups.yahoo.com/group/12VDC_Power/ These folks live on just solar and battery power and are experts with using battery power. Richard, I have a deep cycle battery. I have a generator. It is a honda eu2000i. And i tryed hooking it up last week and i couldn't get it to run the exhaust fan. Also, i am having trouble when hooking it too my refridgeration unit (with nothing else) it doesn't seem to run it properly. Any suggestions? It's getting too hot to be messing with this stuff now. I will check out the link you suggested also. ty.

Shelly, I feel your pain! My 650 is like a stainless steel sauna. Down here in the south, temps have hit 100 or close every day for the last week. Your exhaust fan should run quite while on your 12v battery. I just plug in the built in charger every night. Is yours made that way? If your fan is 12v, your generator wont run it unless it has a converter (or inverter?) to change AC to DC. My refrigeration unit is a cold plate one, I plug it up at night and it stays cold all day. Also, are you able to keep your entry door open? I do mine when it gets especially hot. Still I roast...lol

                  Hope you keep well!

You and me both, Dave. It was the middle of May in 1967 when we arrived and I'll never forget the wall of heat that greeted me when I hit the tarmac. Little did I know it was going to get even hotter. p.s. Congrats on your new Cheeseburger status!

Well, I don't mind if it's 100 outside, but my air conditioning has been broken at work, so makes for a really long day. So I get home to cool off and 45min later the power goes out, so for 2nd time yesterday I was back in 90+ indoor temp. Power stayed off for 4 hours as I tried to take a nap. UGH.

Wish me luck, I have to go back to work now for about 8 to 10 hours... It's probably over 100 now, from all the equipment running. (logging in remotely I see it's 111f in the equipment room)

Yes, i plug in everynite. But lately i just seem to be having trouble with everything and i don't know why!! I have a 12volt marine battery (i just bought a new one 100.00!!)And i used it two days and one nite i didn't plug it in (thought i may OVER charge! and next thing you know, i have exhaust for 1hr. ystday and then bam!!!) So i don't know what the problem there is. Then my cooler hasn't been running as it should and THAT really worries me. I am defrosting today and i will see what happens tomorrow.
Also, you have a/c in your unit? I want to put one in the back window but i don't know enough about how to go about it. Do i have to like grout it in? (not really grout, but that was the only word i could come up with. having a senior moment) Please help me out Carolina. Since you have the same unit. Thanks in advance

I looked up your generator which is : AC output: 120V 2000W. (2.0 kVA) max. (16.6A), 1600W (1.6kVA) rated (13.3A). Lots of numbers that may not make sense. You have 2000w max on it which would be 20 (100 watt light bulbs). You need to look at what is hooked up to your generator and add up the number of watts or amps that is hooked to it. The generator is also rated in amps which is 16.6 max. Most electrical items are rated in amps. If you look at the tags on motors, compressors or any electrical appliance there will be a model number, a serial number and usually number such as 4.0 A That would be 4 amps. Add up the amps and see if they are higher then 16.6. My guess is your way above it. The generator you have is for camping, usually to run a few lights and a couple of other things to make camping more comfortable. To compare a home outlet is usually about 20 amps and when you go above that you trip the circuit breaker. If your in a brand new house you may have a 30 amp outlet. Now consider, can you run EVERYTHING that you have on the stand off of one house outlet? Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners have something called a starting current that is much higher then the tag. The link that I suggested are people that like to stay off of commercial power and live what they call "off the grid". If you throw your question into the board they like as much specifics that you can give them. The generator, model, the battery, the type equipment your using to charge the battery and what you are running. These folks run shops and homes totally off of the commercial power and a few are designers and experts. If what I gave you here isn't enough, the 12 vdc board will walk you through a total running system. RJF

Today is 92 degrees and humid, I had been working around my stick burner (wood bbq pit) since 5 this morning. The work space around the unit was @ 121 degrees.

I love the BBQ business but the humid summers are killers

Like you said pick your days and take some precautions and you will do fine.

It's 99 degrees right now here in Hoschton, Georgia. The humidity is only 29%. It's supposed to cool down on Tuesday. I think we're gonna have a long hot summer. pb

First of all i would like to thank Richard for all his investigating. I really appreciate it and i now have a better understanding of it all. Ty again.
To all the rest of you toughing it out, I commend you all. Sat. as i said went pretty good. Breathing was okay, Heat was a bit much and the fact my exhaust wasn't working didn't help. I was thinking i would probably pack it in a bit early but i was doing pretty well so i hung in, and the came home finished up and went and had a couple of cold ones!!! and then passed out. (and not from too many cold ones. ) I will go out tomorrow which is suppose to be worse than Sat. (provided my breathing is good) and then i will gauge how my week day HOT weather measures up to the Sat. (different people) Maybe tomorrow people that work in the area which i think is mostly what i get will order in, in which case i will leave early. We will see. I am playing it all by ear. Don't want to miss any biz, don't want to piss anyone off by not being there, just gonna roll with it. And Cajun, i LOVE bbq too, but i think i will leave that to you my friend. Too hot for me.
But God i do love my job too. Spent the day defrostin unit, cleaning it all up and getting it ready for the new week. So isn't it a 7 day a week job??? You have to love it to do that many days. Good luck to all. Keep cool and keep in touch.

No ac for me Shelly. I dont think it would work very well with all the heat generated inside, plus I dont use a generator, I like to stay mobile. You have a very good generator, do the figurin to see if your generator would run a small ac unit. Look for a unit thats roughly the size of your back window. The hole may need to be enlarged. The unit will definately need to be sealed around the edges and properly supported as well. You might want to call the people at Custom, they might have a diagram of something similar that they have already done. They are real good people. I am sure they would help you out. If you get one, let me know how it works out. If I get suddenly rich, Ill get one and tell you how it works out!

To all the fellas (and gals too) that were in Vietnam or in the Service at any time I want to say thank you for serving our country. Hats off to you all and If I ever see any of you at my place, the foods on me!

I just looked at the numbers for a window air conditioner. They are rated by BTU, the lowest I found was 5000 BTU and it ran at 4.8 amps, (that doesn't include start up) which means your generator is going to have to be dedicated to the air conditioner IF it handles the startups and even at that with the small margin of extra amps you maybe looking at a new generator in a season. The next unit is 6000 BTU and it wants 6.1 amps. Either a generator is going to have to be devoted to your air conditioner or your going to have to get a more powerful generator. The work space around the unit was @ 121 degrees.I love the BBQ business but the humid summers are killers Like you said pick your days and take some precautions and you will do fine.

I feel your pain. I decided to clean the pit today so I stood in the sun for an hour with a propane torch cooking the junk off of my shelves in the pit. Then I took it over to the car wash and washed it and of course washed out the bay I used when I got done. The irony of the entire day is this: I worked by myself as usual on Friday and did more in a single day than I had ever done before. I mean some major dollars for a 16 foot trailer. I sold 60 pounds of pulled pork in sandwiches, a bunch of beef and 24 slabs of ribs. But Saturday I was dragging all day and left my only helper by himself at 4:00 PM, he is an ace in the hole but works two other jobs as well as clean up for me. I kept thinking all last night and early this morning I need two days a week off and had almost made up my mind to start closing on both Sunday and Monday, although Monday's are always good days. Then today while I was cleaning the pit at the stand 20 plus cars came in to buy BBQ in less than 1 1/2 hours. So of course I start thinking well maybe I should be open on Sunday??? But I'd have to have help I just couldn't work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. No way.

We're having a cool summer here in Anchorage so far. Temps have not been much above 55. I would love to see a nice, hot beach day on the East Coast and then grill supper and eat outside!

Richard, Again i thank you. I am not dumb but this is NOT something i am good at figuring. So thank you. If i do get an a/c and i have not decided yah or nay but if i did, i would only use the a/c and if needed switch off to whatever else. again, appreciate your help.

Carolina, if i decide to get the a/c i will let ya know. As for the generator i got a great price. and i also decided right away to reinvest whatever money i make at this pt. to get things i need or want to make the biz. better for me and it. so i saved and saved and bit the bullet and got a tip on a website that i saved big time. www.wisegenerator.com (it may be www.wisegenerators.com don't remember) great prices. and i shop it big time.

Dr. i can't imagine what you had to go through with the cleaning you had to do. OMG, now that is some serious pork sandwiches ha!! You do all that yourself?? You are my hero. I love bbq and i would love to have the patience to truly learn it and live it, but besides the little smoker (propane, because i would never have the patience for charcoal) and that is all the bbq i can do. Now remember Doc, all work no play makes for a dull guy!!! Everyone needs some r&r!! Have a great one tomorrow.

Shelly, I don't know how much room you have in that 650, but they sell stand alone AC units (don't require a window or anything). Totally self contained and normally good for 1 room. Though a little pricey, you could use it at both work and home.

Here's one I found on Amazon for 318 bucks (10K BTU).

Shelly, I'm certain your not dumb, I've covered several college degrees and ended up in a wheelchair trying to put up with the heat and my own movement troubles. After all of these years of college, my brain works, but dam if I could sell a single hotdog! Your one up on me! Heres one on me, a site to build a "air conditioner" http://www.instructables.com/id/Homemade-air-conditioner/ The site has several of these. Its an ice chest with water and ice. The cold water is pumped through a copper pipe and looped around a fan. The fan blows across the cool pipe and you get cool air. Cheap, just needs a source of ice.
