ice packs... Sun, 01/15/12 10:15 PM (permalink)
Some time back, someone (I think it was Lorna) posted about the ice packs she uses. I'm looking to replace my trusted "blue gel" packs with something that will keep things colder longer.

I'm not using them in a cooler, I'm using them at the bottom of a cold table (with my cold condiments in 1/6 pans above them) so longevity when exposed to heat is important.

I found something online (through another hot digger group) called "Techni Ice", but it got very mixed reviews on Amazon.

So... Anyone got a recommendation?

Thanks!

Equipment Inovators has ice packs called OmniIce that are really good. Designed specific for the food industry but they are expensive. They are rather large (24 1/2 x 11 x 2) so they may not work for you. I run three of them in my ice box on my cart and they last all day.

The way I look at it is Ice cost me about $3.00 per day for 40lbs of ice. I have one of those "Ice House" vending locations near me that is half what a C-Store charges. I could get away with about 20lbs for my meats, condiments, etc but I dont chance it. I still buy another 20lbs for my drinks for 60lbs total.

Five days a week is $780 dollars a year in ice if I work 52 weeks. So in the end ice packs save you money even if they are expensive like the Omniice ones are.

You can get Nordic Ice online at Amazon and at Cabela's. I think Cabela is cheaper. I do not have experience with the other brands but the Nordic Ice beats the crap out of the Blue Ice we used to have from Coleman. Our meats will refreeze (mostly the turkey). The 16 oz is the size we have, I think. Cabela's has 3 different sizes.

The Ice House places that we have run into has "soft" ice. Melts fast. If you put it in your freezer overnight, it will harden it and make the ice last longer.

Send him a $20 bill and self-address label. Ask him to repack in one of the empty boxes and send to you.
