looking for cheap table-top steamer Mon, 06/20/11 1:17 PM (permalink)
Anyone out there have a table-top hot dog steamer they'd be willing to part with really cheap? The lawn and garden center that is two driveway away from my stand is doing a hot dog giveaway on July 1st, and they've asked me to do it. I can't see towing my trailer over there to give away 150 hot dogs (especially since I would have to ask a friend to tow it for me). So I figure I'd just run off something portable. Since I can't fit a grill into my sub-compact KIA, I figured I'd rig up something to steam them with.

Before I go trying to cobble together a steamer out of a camp stove, turkey pan, and bakery cooling racks, I figured I'd try to find an actual hot dog steamer. Nothing on Craigslist nearby is in my price range, so...

Figured I'd ask just in case someone on here has one sitting in the garage or something.

Thanks,

Stubby

How about a BBQ grill with real wood. Hickory chunks and all. They may even supply it.

I honestly want to keep my signature flavor. I'm hoping that this will drive some day to day business my way, so I want to try to keep the taste of my dogs the same. To do that I need to steam them.

what about an electric roaster?    From Wal Mart about $30 when on sell.  http://www.walmart.com/ip/Rival-18-Quart-Roaster-Oven-in-White/13173586    maybe $10 at flea-market.    Also, Wal Mart has electric flat griddle $18 to $30; use a couple of foil pans on the griddle.

Restaurant Equipment has a full size food warmer for $87.  http://www.equippers.com/       I can't find a link to gas warmer/roaster.

You can get a crock pot - just not sure if your HD will like it or not.

Why not take your trailer over?  Show it off so folks recognize it.  I bet they have a mower that can tow it.

Stubby  I can't say for certain but I may have one, and I live sorta close by....
I am in the process of remodeling a trailer, and I have a commercial hot dog steamer - it does dogs and buns....
I will have to talk to the gf to see what our plans our for it....We may use it, we may not.....I am leaning no b/c we are going to be flat grilling our dogs.....But at the same time we are going to need something to steam our buns...I just thought this unit was rather large...Let me talk to her and see what she says...PM me if you are interested.

Thanks everyone for your feedback! I ended up finding a local rental outfit that had the steamer I wanted for $25 per day, which was worth paying for to have the right equipment.

Schmelly - I am definitely interested (though maybe not for this time since I found a rental, although the rental can be cancelled still). Can you send me details through p.m.?

Blissful Bite: there's not a mower in Massachusetts that could move my trailer an inch. They'd need a combine! Seriously, most small tricks don't have the tow capacity. My trailer's rated at 5000 pounds, empty. Add all the water, ice, drinks, the food in the fridge, etc... well, you get the idea. I have a friend that towed it for me a while back. He's in construction, so he rows trailers all day long. We get to where we're going, I get out of my car, he gets out of his truck, and I ask him, how'd it tow? He says, it towed just fine, but damned that sucker's heavy!

It really should have tandem axles. No one can figure out why it doesn't.

Sounds like a nice trailer!  It must have a stack of leaf springs.

I hope all goes well for you on Friday.
