When we lived in Illinois we used to travel to Dewig's in Haubstadt, IN. to purchase all of our meat. Great place, a true butcher shop where they would cut your steaks to order. Since we've sold our home and travel the country in our RV now, I'm looking for the country's best butcher shops. You know, the little out of the way places, or can't miss shops, where you get good service and don't pick your meat out of a bin of already pre-packaged stuff. We've been here in central FL now for a couple months (with the exception of evacuating twice for hurricanes)and the beef at Publix and Wal-mart just are not cutting it with the two of us who are so used to good corn-fed beef of the midwest. So come on all...give me your best meat markets nation wide......we may be coming through your area soon!

In Simi Valley, CA, it's Green Acres Market. One of the best butcher shops I've ever been to. My dogs agreed----they always brought out a huge bone for them!
Good meats and they are very willing to cut them any way you want.

Between my hometown of Catonsville, Md & the next big town over, Ellicott City,(suburb of Baltimore) there lies a slaughter house/butcher by the name of Treuth's. They do beef, pork & sometimes lamb and cut anything to order. Can't say I've ever gotten a bad piece of meat from them.

Best Meat Market: Any bar or pub near a military base

Seriously, at one time here there was a wonderful meat market by the name of Austin's Grocery. Local beef and pork, any cut made to order, fresh seafood, free range chickens, etc. and any special order you cared to make. Alas, the owner died a few years ago and the place has closed.

Drier's Meat Market in Three Oaks, Michigan has wonderful ham and decent variety of sausages. All home made. They have been around awhile, in fact, they are listed in the national register of historic places.

Gary's Meats in Lowell Michigan (For your homemade Jerky or Beef cuts), O'Briens in Ada, MI for homemade sausages (Kielbasa Rocks!), Burton Meat Farm in Grand Rapids for Beef (Make sure you have a Spanish speaking translator with you, or you may be waiting a few)... Couple more I could list, but these are the tastiest around me!

In the Buffalo, NY area, choices for good meat shops are limited. It's either the supermarket or Federal Meats which is a small local chain.
The best I've found is Niagara County Produce on Transit Rd in East Amherst NY.
They have great hours, plenty of parking and a great staff. Probably one of the biggest deli counters I've ever seen. The fresh meats look truly amazing. The best part is that their prices are much better than the supermarkets.

This place started as a prodcue stand years ago but seems to carry everything now. Their cheese and parsley Italian sausage is pretty good.

I totally agree Michael. One of the first times I went there was right before Christmas one year. I pulled a number which was 35. Just then they yelled out the next number to be served. It was 40 which meant I was 94th in line. It took about 2 hours and there really isn't a lot of room in there to stand around. In the end though it was worth it. It was the best crown pork roast I've ever had.

Two other good options in Columbus are Weilands on Indianola in Clintonville and Riffe's on 5th Ave in Grandview. There are aslo some good stands at the North market in the Short North but I find their prices to be a little high.

Of all the grocery chains in Knoxville, TN, only one still cuts portions of meat to your order and that is Food City. Walmart, Krogers, Food Lion and whatever the rest of them sell prepackaged products only.

Food City also does a better than decent job of displaying their products. They also give me free kidney suet and other beef fats for my bird feeder which I extremely appreciate. So do the birds and the raccoons which raid it at night.

I've never tried Florence, but it's supposed to be great. We use Simchick (First Avenue, between 53rd and 52nd), which is fantastic. Widely considered to be the best is Lobel's, at Madison between 82nd and 83rd, but you'll probably need to sell your RV and perhaps your spouse to pay the bill.

I've been to Weilands and I agree with you. I used to go to Riffe's for lamb on occasion. And The place in the North Market (is it Blue Creek Farms?) is expensive, but they're nice. As to the waits at Carfagna's, I try to avoid Saturday mornings and the days just before holidays, unless you're there to pick up an order.

In my area, it's Hi-way meat market in Womelsdorf Pa. All they sell is Prime and Choice meat. They have been around for over 40 years (that's what it says on their van) and they will cut it the way you want it right in front of your eyes.

I can drive a few miles from my home, out into the countryside to a small home-owned meat processing facility, and buy most excellent cuts of whatever kind of meat. The owner buys range, or ranch raised stock and insists that it be raised on a natural diet; no growth hormones, steroids, or other chemicals. He places the stock on his a feed lot where they're fed a diet rich in corn and other kinds of grain until suitably fattened and the meat is hanged and well aged before it's offered for sale. The customer has the option of buying anything from a whole beef to a single steak, cut to his preference. In addition to walk-in trade, he sells to better restaurants and meat speciality shops where one, indeed, pays a premium. The cost of buying on-site is about the same as a supermarket and you get a MUCH better product; well worth the short drive.

Please visit Bringhurst Meats. http://bringhurstmeats.com/index.html . They're across the road from a horse pasture in an area of Berlin, NJ called Tansboro. I've been in here several times and they are an old-style butcher shop. They've been there since 1934. A friend of mine who's the fire marshall down there also works some of their pig roasts, and his brother-in-law is a butcher at Bringhurst, too. The slaughterhouse is right out back. Anyone I've met who's involved with this place are all very nice people. I have found the quality of their meat excellent - the way it's supposed to be. I can't always afford them, and they close fairly early and are not open every single day. So to go there is a treat. I can never find chicken backs in a regular market for crabbing in the summer, but Bringhurst always has them.

Need a calf's foot for that boeuf bourguignon? A whole suckling pig? Or maybe just the ears? Goat for Jamaican food? Then go to Snow's Meat Market at 515 N.6th St. Kansas City, Kansas. You can get any part of cow, sheep and pig, and they will process other meats for you. It's a very good, old fashioned family owned market. I ordered all of my meat from there as a restaurant chef. They made a particular kind of Turkish sausage for us that we provided the recipe for. The Snow's are proud of their business and it shows in their products and service.

I just found out the Snows retired! So now my second favorite meat market is now my number one favorite. Bichelmeyer's at 7th and Cheyenne, Kansas City , Ks. They make some killer sausages as well as having all parts of beasts available. Sad about the Snows, but I hope they enjoy taking it easy.

"Iowa Meat Farms"??? Is that where the best meat in Iowa is shipped, or merely an indication that we've got great meat? I'm happy other parts of the country get our great stuff, but we are really lucky that beef and pork of fine quality can be found in most all stores in central Iowa! By merely asking, butcher's in any of the "supermarkets" will cut meat to order.

In Knoxville, TN the ONLY old-fashioned, authentic meat market left in town in Lay's Market on East Jackson avenue. They can give you any special cut of beef or pork that you want; they also have whole pigs during BBQ season! Want a 2" choice porterhouse that will melt in your mouth? Go to Lays. If you can head over to Le Mars, Iowa there's a great market called Fairway. Their meat is spectacular, not pre-packaged, you pick what you want out of the case and if it's too thin or two thick the butchers will be happy to cut whatever you want. I brought porterhouse steaks and Iowa pork chops all the way back to our winter place in California with me.......a real treat!
