Do you add crackers to your soup? Is it permissable to crunch up crackers and add them to your soup?carl reitz

Crackers should not be crushed into the soup. They should be eaten along with the soup. The only exception to crackers in the soup is the oyster cracker, but do not bury your soup with oyster crackers; use them a little at a time.



Adding sauces and spices to food can be ill-mannered. When you are in a fine restaurant or in someone's home, it is very rude to ask for a bottled sauce to pour all over your meat.


Now that I have written down 2 rules as taught to the Florida Seminole student athletes, I am going to hide in my bathtub with a mattress over my head because I can just hear the responses on this!
(by the way, Carlton, I can see that you love to stir the pot!

I crumble them when I'm at home, or in a chili parlor in a bowl of red. If I'm having chowder I don't use crackers. I use oysterettes and I just drop them in.

Like saltines with butter alongside of chicken noodle & even my MD crab. However, if it's tomato, it must be "Fritos"(the little originals) and they are floating in the soup & crowding out of the bowl

The only thing I crunch crackers in is chili.. I am very fussy about soup, so I don't like anything interfering with the taste of the soup itself..

that does not mean however, that I would deny children at my table the availability of crackers for their soup or even ketchup..

Only thing I add crackers to is Chili (Along with onions and cheese)... And thats only if I added a bit too much HEAT when making it... As for soups, NEVER... If they need crackers to add substance, they're not worthy enough to eat in my book!

I never add crackers to chili, no matter how hot and I add 'em to soup only if it's a mediocre soup. Except for a few cream type soups, the ones I make at home tend to be quite chunky, probably should be considered stews. I like a good crusty, buttered roll or the like as an accompaniment, not crackers.

Crackers are served with the gumbo at my favorite oyster bar. I don't use the cocktail sauce on the oysters (too overpowering) and I don't put the crackers in the gumbo but I sometimes I finish the meal by dipping the crackers in the cocktail sauce.

The only thing that I crumble crackers in is Oyster Stew. I prefer saltines to oyster crackers. I eat crackers on the side with my vegetable soup. I like crusty bread with chili or stew. My Mom eats cornbread with her vegetable soup. When I have potato soup, I don't usually eat bread or crackers.

Crackers crushed up in chili I was told when little was called "turtle soup" that scared me so I never adopted the procedure. I love butter on crackers with chili and vegetable beef soup and potato, oysterettes(we actually don't have "oysterettes" anymore, just oyster crackers) in oyster stew. Oh and those little captain's wafers with salad. Other than that, I can do without.

Oysterette question! Didn't the box have a little man peeling potatoes at one point?

i add crumbled saltines only in one style of chicken noodle soup that i make and whole oyster crakers---spareingly to my fish chowder---oddly,not in the clam chowder though. otherwise,its whole crakers,lightly buttered WITH soup--i like to crunch!

I always have OTC brand Oyster Crackers with Bisque, Gumbos, Chowders and Chili at home. They are much bigger and firmer than regular oyster crackers and stay crisp. The only place I have seen them is at the Oyster Bar at Shaws Crab House in Chicago They have them on the bar in big beer goblets.

Oh my gosh, cracker etiquette. Will this spawn posts about offering your guests crackers with the soup you serve, or heaven forbid, ketchup for their kids who won't touch a thing (soup included?) without it.

I occasionally will have a bit of cracker served on the side with my soup. I like the oyster crackers many places serve with clam chowder. A friend at work breaks up so many saltines and adds them that we ask her if she would like some soup with her crackers.

Miss Manners reminds us that if you're home alone, "ettiquette" doesn't come into play at all. We got these tiny little Israeli crackers, about 1/4" across, and they're good. They come in a plastic jar. I believe the brand is Osem.

I'd forgotten about these! I found them once in a European Deli & bought a jar, they were great. Hmm, going to be over that way on Friday, might just have to make a stop.

I like using crumbled saltines to add "body" to brothy soups. I wouldn't do this in a situation where the server of the soup might construe it as criticism, but otherwise I don't know why it would be bad etiquette. Many soups incorporate some type of bread as a thickener, like ribollita (sp?) and tortilla soup, and there are soups to which some form of bread is added for extra oomph, like the crouton in french onion soup. Nobody frowns on these practices; isn't putting crackers in soup basically the same thing?

While we're talking etiquette, here is a trick for those individual packs of crackers you get in restaurants. To avoid spraying crumbs all over the table, crush the crackers while still in the plastic, then carefully open the package along one side, and pour cracker crumbs into soup.

One can't eat tomato soup w/o putting saltines into the soup & letting them get soggy. Yum!

I like a lot of crackers crumbled or oyster crackers in my soup and chili. I wouldn't do it at someone's home, but if eating at an informal restaurant or at home I am going to eat it the way I like it...and that is good and crackery!

I crumple crackers in chile or soup inva restaurant or at home and put oyster crackers in oyster stew. I would not do it as a guest in someone's home

That is the most reliable clue to spotting Americans in a European restaurant: they are the only ones salting and peppering their food before they taste it. And unless things have changed much in the past 20some years, the only people in Amsterdam wearing Heineken T-shirts are the Americans. Happy holidays!

My dad never eats soup -- he eats cracker mush. He's in a nursing home now and the aides know that they need to keep crackers in his room to put in his soup or he won't eat it!

Oysterette question! Didn't the box have a little man peeling potatoes at one point?

I always thought he was shucking oysters. Since I hated oysters when I was a kid, I thought the "Oysterettes" were made from the real thing.

Trader Joe's make a wonderful oyster cracker, bigger than the regular store brands,nice & crispy. I love oyster crackers in oyster stew, clam chowder, saltines in tomato soup(made with milk instead of water).

Although, they are not crackers, I always put fritos in the bottom of my bowl before adding chili. Try it ,you'll like it.

My husband puts tons of crackers in all of his soups, I personally can't stand soggy crackers in my soup and have them on the side with butter or cheese.

The comments about seasoning food before tasting reminds me of my uncle Austin. He and my Aunt Joyce would come to our house for dinner every week when I was growing up and he would always dump catsup all over his food before he tasted it. Mind you, it was my mom's homemade catsup and was wonderful, but she was always so mad at him for not tasting the food that she worked so hard to prepare before smothering in catsup.

Unless one is dipping a grilled cheese sandwich in said tomato soup
