RE: Smith & Wollensky
Which one are you planning on going to? I assume it's in Houston?
I believe that I posted about this before. In New York, S&W was once -- and perhaps still is -- considered by many to be among the best steakhouses in the city. I used to think so.
Last winter, however, my wife and I went there for dinner on a Saturday night. I am not exaggerating when I say that, on a dollar-versus-quality basis, it was one of the worst meals we ever had. The steak was almost inedible. The vegetables were ice cold in the middle even after being sent back. And the baked potato was hard and rotten. Just terrible. This went well beyond "a bad night" that any restaurant can have.
Now, others will disagree, I'm sure. And I can't speak to S&W in Houston or nationwide; the last time I ate in the DC restaurant, I enjoyed it very much. But, my most recent experience was incredibly disappointing. It gave "bad" a bad name.
