No, it isn't chicken noodle. It is Hot and Sour soup from your local mom and pop Chinese restaurant. Satisfying and hot enough to make you sweat out those cold cooties. YUM.

Having some right now....tongue is already tingling.

I have to agree with Michael. There's a reason Grandma's chicken soup with motzah balls is known as Jewish Penicillin. Of course, when fighting a bad cold, I admit to adding several drops of Tabasco sauce to increase the sinus opening qualities. Cajun Kosher, got to love it.

I love hot and sour soup, but it is just a a little too rich and thick for a cold fighting soup. If home made chicken is not available, my next choices would be a good bowl of rice noodle chicken or rare beef Pho, or Thai Tom Yum chicken soup.

Try Portuguese kale soup. A little thinner than hot and sour, and red pepper and linguica and chourico for kick.
A good basic recipe can be found in Howard Mitchem's Provincetown Seafood Cookbook.

I prefer homemade chicken noodle. As the first sign of a cold I make a batch of homemade Ceasar salad dressing. It's got enough garlic in it to kill anything. It actually has seem to work for me and I can't really recall the last cold I had. Knock on wood.....

My daughter called me the other day and said she was sick and coming home. The second thing she said was a request for me to make her a pot of chicken noodle soup so she could have it when she got home. She went through the whole pot. 'Nuff said!

PS-----I love hot and sour soup, pho and the others. But there is something about just straight chicken noodle soup when you're sick.......

While the Lipton's chicken noodle soup boils, I sautee about 7 coarsely cut-up cloves of garlic in olive oil and add a chopped-up bunch of green onions and a couple of tablespoons of powdered ginger. I pour out most of the liquid from the Lipton's and add the garlic, ginger and scallions. Salubrious! And no one will come near you, so you won't feel bad about spreading the cold.

Oh my goodness...........it sounds so dreadful that I am going to have to try it but will use fresh chopped ginger instead

One of the classics in Asia, not really a soup, is ginger tea. Take a good chunk of fresh ginger, slice it up thin, and steep it in boiling water for a while. It works wonders. If you do a little Googling, it seems there is a scientific basis for why things like chicken soup chase a cold.

I would also recommend some Chineese BBQ Pork with LOTS of Hot Mustard. I've also thought about Beef Broth with a heaping spoon of grated horseradish.

When I'm sick I always crave miso from the Japanese restaurant down the street. (Hayashi, if you're in Williamsburg VA)

Hello All,
My wife makes a nasty onion soup when she is coming down with a cold.
It stinks up the house, but really nips her colds in the bud or shortens them.
For my part, I use Zicam, or just suffer.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

I'll go for anything brothy with lots of vegetables--but not so many that the consistency is more stew than soup. A tomato-based vegetable soup (preferably without grains or pasta) would probably be my favorite. You get lots of vitamin C and antioxidants from the tomatoes.

Chicken tortilla isn't a bad choice either, unless it's one of those weird mutated Northern versions with a thick, creamy broth. I won't make chicken noodle for a cold, though . . . I like it too much when I'm healthy!

I like to mix wasabe into miso soup.

Or, healthy amounts of tabasco suace in my campbell's chicken noodle.
I like progresso and all, but actually, when I'm ill, I usually can't stomach all those big chunks.
The more broth the better.

Campbells's tomato with some cream and a grill cheese improves my attitude. I do not know how it makes my cold or flu feel. I generally have a nice glass of Canadian with ice with it. It may not improve my cold but my attitude improves immensely.

Yes, that is the best thing ever for a stuffy head. A bowl of decent hot and sour is a distant second, though. Oops, forgot, tom kha kai is another great one too.

There was once a Tan Tan Mein that would clear up anyone's cold.

Sadly the restaurant closed and the Tan Tan Mein of that quality has never been found again.

Sure wish the Shezwan Palace that used to be on Pico Bl in West LA was still in business.

The search continues.

I had a Mexican chicken soup that cleared out my nostrils last Winter.
The jalepenos used were like an electric charge: there was plenty of volts to keep my nose flowing. By the time I finished my bowl, I had drained out most of everything stuck up in my sinus cavity.

I wish I could remember where we were eating out.

I will have to go with Hot & Sour too, as mushrooms contain anti-oxidants and spicy food is also known to be good for you, especially for clearing out the sinuses.

Chicken soup: Chicken thighs, water, add 1 WHOLE BUNCH of dill washed with the root and one WHOLE bunch of parsley with the root, WASHED WELL!!!. Tie 'em up together. Add a peeled chopped parsnip and a peeled chopped turnip, 1 whole onion, a bag of baby carrots, 1 tbsp of salt boil for about an hour or 2, take out the herbs, I like it with Matzoh Balls or egg noodles or fideo noodles.

Was feeling blah and cold yesterday and went to the drive-thru at Chick-Fil-A and got a bowl of their chicken noodle soup. Ate it at my desk for lunch and it was wonderful. Thick and full of noodles, carrots, and the chicken tasted very fresh. I will definitely eat it again.

I've tried most of 'em, including home made chicken (Mimi Sheraton's recipe) and Portuguese Kale. All have their comfort merits, but for a cold, Meowzart is right. Gotta get that Hot and Sour down at the first sign of congestion.

Agreed, I love hot and sour soup, and will have to try it as Chinese penicillin sometime.

If you live in the Southwest, posole (pork, white hominy, usually red chile) and green chile stew (beef pork or chicken, green chile, potatoes, and tomatoes) are also good for what ails you.
