One day in Lehigh Valley - Fri, 02/18/05 6:49 PM

We FINALLY can just get in the car and take-off tomorrow. (insert sigh of relief). Both of us have been just way too stressed at work. We couldn't do a weekend, but we decided, because of the Crayola Factory (just need to smell crayons and behave like a 3 year old), to venture up to Easton, PA. I did a search and got some great ideas for Jimmy's Hot Dogs and then probably a comparison at Yocco's. The candy store in Easton is a must too. From searching the web I saw the winery trail and we'll be getting to at least two of them, Clover Hill and Vynecrest Winery. There's a brewery too, but Bob has that info. My question is: what about Breakfast? Any hotspots or bakeries? My native PA pals - how does our itinerary look? Any must see's we're missing? Thanks for any info! Sue

We ate at Jimmys on the Delaware this week while in Easton PA. Hot Dogs were great, but the Chili was awesome!

Go to Yocco's if you have to, but reviews are decidedly mixed. (I'm with the Nays). There are threads on Roadfood.

With a name like Aleswench, you might be interested in the fact that there are 2 really good Beer Stores. Shangy's, in Emmaus, and Tanczo's, on Jacksonville Road in Bethlehem. Shangy's gets all the press, but I like Tanczo's even better.

You might also want to hit the Allentown Farmer's Market. Lots of good Pa Dutch food. One of my 10 favorite roadfoods of all time is the Chicken strips from the BBQ stand in the center of the indoor market.

Sorry I can't help you with Breakfast, when I'm passing thru that area it's usually either lunch or dinner time.

Aleswench,
I've been told of a fabulous diner in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, just across the river from downtown Easton. Take the free bridge; anyone can tell you where it is from there.
Only Partly Knowingly, Ort. Carlton in Distant Athens, Georgia.

The Key Diner in Phillipsburg is very good. It's right on US 22.

I can tell you that if you're ever in Kutztown you really have to have breakfast or a big brunch at Letterman's Diner.  Unreal portions, great price, excellent food.  A true Roadfood place.  You will walk out of there wondering how the guy makes any money.

Two other breakfast spots are NormaJ's, on Route 309 about 3 miles north of Route 22 in Allentown.  It's tiny but a local favorite for breakfast for decades.

North on the next eastward exit of Route 22 on Cedar Crest Boulevard is Morgan's, another one of those old country hotels with a breakfast menu that's different than the usual diner offerings.  The pecan waffles are a popular choice.
