Hello all ,

I would be interested to know when the next Hot Dog Tour might possibly be .

I notice that I missed one in January .

John , can you give an idea of when another might be planned.

I'm looking forward to attending one of these in the future.

We barely scratched the surface of North Jersey hot dogs last Fall in a great tour led by John Fox. I hope we can prevail on him to do another before the year is over.

I think we should have a mass of Micro Tours that take place one weekend! God knows how I'd like to attend one of them NJ tours, but if we created a mass amount of areas, then there would be several folks reporting back on their experiences! Country Wide Reports! Could be fun! Cover hundreds of areas, maybe make a challenge and do a dog face off at the end?

I did the NJ tour in (was it sept?) We had a blast! The thing was, after I went I mentioned it to several friends and many said they would have come along if they had known. With an outside group of people going together on a specific date , it seems to work better than trying to get a group of friends to go. Plus we got John Fox on that tour!

I'd do it again.

Maybe a Mid-Hudson Texas Hot tour of New Paltz, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh...and maybe a side trip to Middletown for those wanting to try a Coney Island dog from there?

RE: 2005 Hot Dog Tours 2005/05/04 20:28:21
One thing that discouraged us from doing the CT tour was the distance between each place. While it took awhile for us to get to NJ, Once we were there, John picked places that were close together, I think that was a huge plus (In addition to showcasing a very different dog at each place)

The tour was designed to show different brands of dogs, or the same brand cooked differently.

If you want "different dogs" in Connecticut you HAVE to travel to different regions.

From Bridgeport to New Haven and north to Meriden, just about every place serves a Hummel's beef/pork dog.

If you stay in this area, you'll be eating only Hummel's all day - which defeats the purpose of a tour.

Hello all ,

I'm glad the interest is there .
I also know of people that would've gone on the last tour but their schedules did not permit.
I agree with seafarer that you only scratched the surface on how big this could be .
Uncle Vic has a neat idea too . Folsk in other areas of the country can do their own Hot Dog tour the same day and we all report back with the results.
Say the word Coney Island Lou , a Mid Hudson Tour is not out of the question , but I do have my favorites in North Jersey. Rutts , Callahans , etc.

Great ideas

I'm definitely up for another tour some time soon. I was without my computer for a week and am just getting caught up. In Jersey, there seem to be clusters of hot dog places. It's convenient when they are closeby. But, like Conn., there are some places that serve the same dog cooked the same way. One good thing about going to Callahan's is that another hot dog joint, Hirams, is literally right across the street. Both places deep fry the dogs, but use different brands. Also they are different as far as atmosphere. Callahans is a family type place while Hirams is a little bar that is known for hot dogs and hamburgers. Both would be good to hit. But in that area of the state, you mostly find deep fried dogs, although there are a number of hot dog stands specializing in dirty water dogs.

Hello all ,

I think it would be great if we get Mr. Fox , our expert , to lead the way.

Say the word and we will get the ball running.

I love the ideas of Callahans and Hirams , we can knock off two in one stop . I'm pretty sure you did not get to them on your last tour .

The intinerary you had last time seemed to be a good one for everyone . Quite a few shops in a short period of driving .

I say leave the planning to John Fox and we all get onboard with a date in mind.

What do you all think??

I'm in for any hot dog tour planned by John Fox - the man knows his hot dogs and the man knows his way around New Jersey. Just one caveat: deep fried hot dogs are at the bottom of my list of favorites-let's make sure we get to go to a few places with boiled, steamed, grilled or whatever hotdogs.

Forgot to mention in my last note: today's NYTimes has a bit on a hot dog stand in Dag Hammersjold Park, near the UN buildings in Manhattan, where they serve a variety of styles of hot dogs - $4.75 each...

Haven't seen today's Times yet, but that doesn't seem altogether ridiculous. Some of the Sabrett cart guys have hit the $2 mark, especially when they feel they're dealing with tourists, and the $2 slice of pizza (without extra toppings) has been here for some time. And my sons think nothing of going to a cocktail lounge and dropping $14 for a martini. So I'm not shocked.

Also, and I don't know if I've noted this before, a couple of years ago there was an article about the fees the hot dog vendors pay the city for the choice location. Topping the list was the guy who has the cart in front of the Metropolitan Museum. As I recall, his fee, established in an auction, was $106,000 for that year. Only in Gotham, friends. Stop me now, before I start in on the $14,000 pre-school.

I was looking at the calendar, and it would be near impossible for me to participate in a hot dog tour any Saturday soon. I work 5 out of 6 Saturdays, and late spring until early fall I am asked to work my day off, which I do for overtime. I have a few weeks off, but this year my wife was able to get the same weeks off, so we will be planning to go away. But I will be happy to give suggestions and addresses, and sneak over to meet some of you if you make Frank n Fries in Rahway one of your stops. They make an excellent grilled beef and pork dog with a good thick chili.

I have a crazy idea. If we can't make one of these outing and live
in different parts of the United States, what do you think of sending
a hot dog, sauce and bum frozen with a small piece of dry ice to John.
If he would go for this and rate the "Dogs" with the best in the
Country.
He and his friends could do the taste testing.
Just a idea

Why don't we plan for Sept , and allow Mr. Fox to set it up , if you would please sir.

Count me in for September 17th- I've already made a big red mark on the calandar.

BTW: for info to my friends in Orange county. We were in Newburgh today and had a couple of Texas hots at Anna's- they were a great disappointment . They've apparently switched to a new hot dog and the sauce tasted an awful lot like ketchup. I've been talking that place up on these pages for the past few years, but now I'm not so sure although I will give them another try sometime in the next few weeks.

John and Coney Island Lou ,

Sounds great , I would love to meet you guys for a dog or two .

I'm on vacation June 6th to 10th .
Otherwise it has to be a Sat. as I work in the Big Apple .
Give me a date and we will see if it works .

I'm in Highland Mills , not far from Middletown and I'm there about once a week

Lets hope John Fox can get Sept 17th off as it works for me also
I would suggest we pencil in that date tentatively.

Also if we get a big enough group from OC to the Hot Dog Tour I can inquire about a Motorcoach .

I organize Bus Trips to Nascar races , AC and ball games for our local K of C and would love to try and set this up .

To Raine ,
I know where you are located , my wife and I have been to Charlotte and Rockinham for the races . We will be visiting the area in August looking at relocation options . I have under four to go with the City of NY and counting the years, months , days , hours and minutes.
Let me know where you are and we will try to stop by .

I doubt if we could fill a bus up from here...BUT...hows about hiring a bus for the tour itself???? We certainly have far enough notice now.....I bet we could get 25-30 people to commit at $25 a head....also....maybe we can get a certain webmaster to help with making this an OFFICIAL Roadfood Event...mebbe????

Hello Coney Island Lou ,

That sounds doable for me . $25 per sounds just right . How do we see about getting it in as an official event .?

I can get the bus from West Point Tours . We can have one pickup in Orange county for us and then the second pickup at the meeting point.

John,

I read about Frank n' Fries over on HollyEats and drove over their on my way home from work about a year ago. It looked as if they had gone out of business. I think there was a "For Sale" sign in the window or maybe a "For Rent" sign -- I don't remember. Are they back? Did they change locations? Was I having a bad dream? The location I drove to was on W. Grand Ave. in Rahway. I haven't been back that way since but I'd still love to try it.

The owners are trying to sell the business in order to move to Florida. They are trying to get the potential new owners to buy the business as well as the building. And to use the same hot dogs and chili. In the meantime they are open. Their hours are 11 to 3 Mon. thru Sat.

John ,

We will make this happen .
I will reserve a bus next week when I return from a little R and R.
They will ask for a pickup point in Jersey and the locations we will be visiting . Now what I need is a starting point , and we will end at same spot for the tour . I can add the other locations we will be going to at a future date . So for now I just need a starting point . Where will it be ? Any assistance from Roodfood would be helpful , and perhaps they would like to do shirts or hats for everyone . Or one of the establishments we may visit may want to help "support " this effort .

Coney Island Lou will keep us up to date on any word from Roodfood.
Mr. Fox will be our guide.
West Point Tours will be the motorcoach line .

Any other ideas folks , feel free to email me seperately if you like.

Either way, feel free to email me regarding any details about the Big Dog Tour. I mentioned it to my girlfriend Lil at work and she sounded real interested so far. She's originally from Bergen County, NJ, and all she talks about is Hiram's and Rutt's.

As long as you can find your way to the Garden State Parkway, it will be fairly easy. North to exit 138, make a right off the exit, go a mile, and the Galloping Hill Inn will be on the left.

Hello all ,

I have talked to one of the powers that be on this site via email .
A favorable response to our Hot Dog Tour meet in Sept was received .
I will not get into all the logistices , except to say that I think we should come up with a name for the group and or meets .
We should not use Roadfood.com in any type of literature at their request .

I fully understand their request , as they will not be attending the dog meet . Legalities and all .

I will keep on telling friends about the great forums and to join the gang though , word of mouth is the best form of advertisement .

So back to the idea , I suppose we should have a name for our group . We could possibly put on T Shirts and or hats for the event .

We could also involve a charity and have this run as a fundrasier .

Does anyone know of any former Hot Dog Eating Champs down on their luck ? That type of thing .

As we get closer to the event , I think another Mini meet will be neccesary to organize .

Coney Island Lou , Seafarer John , Brooklyn Bill and myself really put out some great ideas over lunch last week .

And if John Fox has a day off during the week and anyone else interested , can join us for another organizational meeting .

Just throwing this all out there for discussion .

And for a name or two

Northeast Doggers

I will think of more but you get the idea.

Lou ,
I love Hot Dog Nation !!!

John ,
They will not give me an approximate cost until I give them the full intinerary. So the sooner you decide the locations and times let me know and I can get an exact price on the bus .

I have a few ideas regarding places, but I thought that since I've been to all of them, that we would leave it up to the people who are planning on coming as to where they might want to go.
