As to who has the best, I can't say.  They all taste the same to me.  But a pie expert like Buffetbuster can discern the differences.  A few years ago, when making his year end "best" choices, he thought the chess pie at the Bon Ton Mini Mart in Henderson, KY was the maybe the best pie he ate that year.  That was a surprise to me; to my way of thinking, it was just another chess pie.

Thanks LouisBon Ton Mini Mart does indeed make an excellent chess pie, right there with Sylvan Park in Nashville for the best Ihave ever had.  I will dig around and see if I can find a couple photos of these versions.

      Thank you!  And that's a tough question.  I'd probably lean toward the lemon, but this plain one is a delicious, mellow pie, and I had all the ingredients on hand--very easy to put together on a whim.

          love2bake, that pie looks sooo right!!  Love the presentation too.  Mine usually end up beign staged on the "Deputy Dawg" cartoon plates my mom still has from when I was a wee lad in short pants!!  I've made a lemon chess before from a recipe that CajunKing shared with me.  I made it for a pie contest in NYC and they didn't know what it was supposed to be.  None of the judges had ever heard of it before.  They kept asking me to repeat the name.  "Chest pie?  Cheese pie?" 
           
          I also tried one at a restaurant in my hometown that was listed as cheese pie on the dessert menu.  Great homemade pies there and this one sure tasted like chess pie but I think the person making the daily pie board thought that they surely must have meant "cheese pie"!
           
          I am wondering and perhaps between you, Buffetbuster, CajunKing and The Mayor, you can explain to me the difference between chess pie/sugar cream pie/buttermilk pie.  I've always had this idea that they show up and get drunk at the same family reunion together as they seem so closely related to one another.

            BillyBoy - Yes they could be drunk cousins
             
            Chess Pie usually has cornmeal added to the "custard" mix which then floats to the top and creates a wafer thin "crust"
             
            Buttermilk Pies have then slight bite of the butter milk, and usually very mild flavor
             
            Sugar Cream Pie  is made with plain cream and usually nutmeg

              Based on what I've either read or observed, I think Cajun pretty much nailed it!

                  Ha!  I never thought about that about vinegar pies.  Very cool, Cajun.    My grandma made vinegar pie, and I have the recipe but haven't gotten the nerve to try it.  Guess I should...
