Gravy fries are popular in South Mississippi. There was a restaurant that served Drydock Fries--fries, roast beef and gravy, and cheese sauce--yummy! Unfortunately, it is closed. However, gravy fries are found in many of our local restaurants.

I love wet fries as well and find them often on the menus of Roadfood type places. Try adding some crumbled Gurkee's (sp) fried onion rings or some well done bacon bits on top of the gravy. Even better!

Fries and gravy. Ahh, yes, I remember now. When I was younger, growing up in the NYC area, the deli's served gravy with fries when you ordered "open" roast beef, turkey, or brisket sandwiches. The sandwiches were served open faced with french fries and gravy over all of it.

I am from Newfoundland, on Canada's east coast. French fries with ground beef and gravy(brown)is a favourite. There are some who prefer dressing(bread stuffing like for poultry) instead of the ground beef. I like both but usually go for the ground beef.

Fries and gravy are a big deal up here in Canada. That also includes poutine (fries, gravy and cheese) as well as fries, gravy and meat. Even the fast food joints up here (McDonalds, BK, KFC) do fries and gravy. Heck, Frito Lay even makes a Fries and Gravy potato chip. I prefer KFC's poutine over McD and BK. It has to be tried at least once in your lifetime.

I get strange looks when I order gravy on my fries in the dallas area but so what . that's the way I like them. It's hard to find a good brown gravy though, most taste like they come straight from a can. The best brown gravy down here that I have found is at the chain "Texas Roadhouse". It's also hard to find a good Hot beef sandwich here.

Big in Jersey diners, as well. Guess I am too southern. I want my gravy on mashed potatos. Fries are for ketchup, ranch dressing, wing sauce, vinegar, cheese and bacon, wing and ranch mixed, garlic sauce, thai peanut sauce, dutch mayo, or bbq sauce. But that's it!!

Hi everyone,
I can't say enough about fries with brown gravy which are a Jersey diner staple. Although no one's mentioned fries with melted mozzarella and brown gravy which I'd always thought were disco fries. That by the way is an awful name and we always refer to them as fries with cheese and gravy, and we always get them with mozzarella without even asking. Although one time at a little deli and grill in NJ I had fries with yellow cheese sauce and brown gravy and they were good too.

Just a little side note to my ramble. The first time I heard about them, I thought the combination sounded disgusting, but I ordered them and they are delicious.

Captain Morgan -

I think gravy is in the eye of the beholder. At Nick's in Philadelphia it is more like a thick au jus, other places it is like a traditional gravy. I use the rule that if the restaurant calls it gravy, then it is gravy.

Boy, talkin' about bringing back memories! When I was in high school in the sixties, we ate lunch at a little restaurant called The Clay Restaurant.(we just called it Clay's). A big plate of steak fries smothered in brown gravy, chased with an RC Cola in a bottle was standard fare four-five days a week. Clay's was on Main Street across from the old Henry Clay High School in Lexington, KY.

I always have french fries (preferably shoestring) with gravy (kind depending on the type of..) with a Hot Roast Beef or Hot Turkey Sandwich. (Two slices of bread with gravy) I still use a little bit of ketchup.) Imagine the shock looks I get when I order fries with gravy and I live in Minnesota. I first encountered a US-style fish and chips restaurant about thirty years ago, and I didn't know the "rules". So I put malt vinegar on both the fish and the fries, and dipped both in the tartar sauce.

Fries and gravy can be found in a lot of places around here (central NY). It might not always be on the menu, but you can order it up easily enough. My mom used to go to a diner in our hometown when she was a teenager (50's-60's) and have fries and gravy... the diner is still there (though under different management) and you can still get them. I stop in on occasion for a burger and fries w/gravy, it's true comfort food for me.

The first place I came to know fries with gravy was at The Salt City Diner, a 50's joint on Rt. 57 in Liverpool, which is now an Irish Bar. I was Freshman in High School when it opened (1986.)

IT was good stuff. It was about this time I began to open up my mind to diners, including Doc's Little Gem, the B'ville Diner and Serpico's.

I think I can almost attribute fries and gravy to my awakening and love of diners as roadfood. Although, the idea of roadfood (eating at mom and pop stands while traveling) I attribute to my parents and my early childhood travels.

Over the years we have used the restaurants at truck stops as an easy stop when fuel is needed for both the vehicle and US. I usually ask for a cup of Brown Gravy with my French Fries when ordering a Burger or other entree. I like to dip the FF rather than smother or slather them with the gravy.
