I had strep throat last fall and got some popsicles from Meijer's. There was a box that had root beer popsicles and I had to get those as they are my favorite. The problem is that there were two other flavors I don't care for in the box. The left overs are still in my freezer!

Yes, I know, I wish they would make a box with only Root Beer!

According to the archives of The Straight Dope from Nov. 14, 1975 ( http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_356a.html ):

Dear Cecil:
OK, Popsicles and Fudgesicles I understand. So what's the difference between a Creamsicle and a Dreamsicle? --C.S., Chicago

The sherbet-like shell of the Creamsicle is identical to that of the Dreamsicle, but the payoff inside is ice cream in the former, ice milk in the latter. The difference in price, lasttime I checked, was about a nickel. --CECIL ADAMS

Mar,

I, too, loved the Banana flavor but I believe that was a Fudgesicle, not Popsicle, flavor.

We had the kind that you made at home from Koolaid using a Tupperware popcicle mold. Fill it up, put it in the freezer, and you have popcicles. Of course waiting for them to freeze was a major downer for a kid.
We would also chase down the "Goody Goody" ice cream truck. The old guy that drove it wore a full long sleeved gray uniform complete with a service hat...all in the heat of a Texas summer! His changer device was almost as interesting as the contents of his truck...almost. Double sticked cherry popcicles, and fudgecicles were the order of the day, and one could tell where the kids had been by what had melted on their white T-shirts. And all of this for a dime!

No, Howard, you can still get banana Popsicles. There's a box with banana, lime and rootbeer-flavored Popsicles, unfortunately only available at one store in my area. I always have a box in the freezer during the summer and can't quite decide which one I like the best. I don't know if they even make a lemon flavor anymore, but that's one I'd sure like to try.

I also remember a white lemon flavor. Also I remember when popsicles went from single's to a double format with two sticks which could be shared.

According to the Popsicle website ( http://www.icecreamusa.com/popsicle/ ), Popsicles are currently available in various boxed combinations in the following flavors: banana, blue raspberry, bubblegum, cherry, cola, cotton candy, fruit punch, grape, green apple, kiwi, lemon-lime, lemonade, lime, mixed berry, orange, raspberry punch, root beer, sour cherry, strawberry, strawberry-kiwi and watermelon. Also, three additional flavors are available in multi-flavor Popsicles (pineapple, sour black cherry and a mystery flavor). Some of the multi-flavor Popsicles have as many as five different flavors in a single pop.

Thanks, I seen that before, I can only find about 2 of the kinds You mentioned and I checked every BIG Supermarket within 20 miles of my house.

I wonder maybe they don't make every one of those, every year?

Maybe they rotate them eevery 2 or 3 years?

Or make some of them aare just Regional.

Does anyone remember the SkyBlue flavor? It was the color of antifreeze and was vaguely vanilla flavored. It was my favorite along with root beer.

The blue popsicles were raspberry-flavored. We could only buy them from the ice cream truck, not from stores.

Re: Creamsicles and Dreamsicles: If memory serves me, Creamsicles had orange sherbet on the outside and vanilla ice cream (or ice milk) inside. Dreamsicles, on the other hand, had orange popsicle on the outside with vanilla ice cream (or ice milk) inside.

Banana Popsicles they were. My mother always split them between my brother and me. Both of us always wanted the entire thing.

I have seen Popsicle put out a Rootbeer only box in limited runs. The bigger stores had them here in Ohio last summer, but not this summer.

Hope you find them!

I remember that my Elementary School had a box where ice cream was sold and if you made good grades and had good behavior in the 7th and 8th Grade , you got to work at the ice cream stand. I remember Banana Fudge Popsicles the best, they were like Fudgesicles, but were banana flavoured. I remember that they were so cold that they always stuck to your tongue if you weren't careful. Our Harris Teeter store sells boxes of the regular Banana Popsicles still and they are oh so good.

Zataar, you are right. Originally (I'm talking about the late 50's, early 60's), there was a blue popsicle that tasted like vanilla, or cream soda. THEN the blue raspberry came along and has stayed that way ever since. I, for one, wished that they had stayed with the original blue. A blue cream popsicle, a hot July, at East Beach in New Bedford, Ma - heaven for a six year old girl!

OMG! I forgot about the first Blue popsickle until You mentioned it! I think it was suppose to be a imitation berry flavor, but you're right, it tasted more like cream soda than berry! What You are talking about had to be at least 45 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Does anyone remember popsicles that tasted like 7 UP? I loved those ones! I grew up in flint Michigan and I got them from men selling them from those push carts with bells on them. I saw a guy with one about a year ago in Chicago and I pulled over and asked for one but alas! no 7 Up popsicle. They had push ups though. I didn't like them as a kid though....Is there a compnay who makes 7 Up popsicles?

I liked banana. Dream (or Cream)sicles came also, I believe, in strawberry. And didn't someone make a similar treat that had some kind of crunchies in the outer coat?

Hello All,
My experiences with popsicles were first in the 60's. Loved the root beer, banana and cherry.
Rick F., I remember the strawberry thing you are talking about. They also had a chocolate.
But I can't recall what they were called.
Take Care,
Fieldthistle

I thought the middle (clear) section of a rocket popsicle (those red, white, and blue popsicles) tasted like a 7-up popsicle. But I don't remember any 7-up flavor, except the ones we made in the freezer in Tupperware with 7-up and a little orange juice.

Don't know if they have them by you, but Waldbaum's and ShopRites carry them. Creamsicle brand, Orange and Raspberry flavors. Don't know if they are as good as they were, but I'm going to pick some up next time I'm there and find out!

Thank You!

The closest store to me is almost 20 miles, that seems strange, this store is across the stateline in Indiana, maybe they are not available in Michigan. I will check this out the next time I get that way.

Thanks again!

Today at Waldbaum's, buy one box of twelve (orange & raspberry), get another box free. Just had a raspberry and enjoyed it. Tomorrow night, I'll try the orange.

I'm in the unique position of having been an ice cream driver who grew up in a mom and pop grocery just outside of Chicago (River Grove, Il). The Popsicle cases I delivered were marked O-C-G (orange-cherry-grape) or R-B-L (root beer-banana-lime). These are the combination packs still being marketed. When I was a kid in our store, the popsicles were sold from bulk pack boxes, two sticks per break apart pop and one flavor per box. We always had 6 or 8 flavors in a roll top freezer. The odd ones that stick out in my memoty are licorice (oddly a white popsicle) and a pale blue berry flavor.
Cheers!
Bill

As a kid in the 70's I remember vanilla & rootbeer being the fun , exotic flavors. I also remember Good Humor trucks selling cola ice (italian ice in a cup)--whatever happened to those? I would love to get my hands on some now!

Cinnamon (or Red Hot) Popsicles, back in late Fifties/early Sixties. Very dark red in color (much more so than cherry) and *very* hot, just like the candy. Sometimes wonder if I dreamed the whole thing; no one else seems remembers them but they sure were great.

Hey there So---------for those bannana popsickles-----make some simple syrup----equall amounts water and sugar in a pan heat until it is WELL dissolved---use this to make the popsicles-it blends better then just sugar---then mix water--simple syrup and bannana flavoring to taste and freeze---easy as pie---hmm actually easier then pie!

Hood in New England produces a variety pack with Orange, Root Beer, Banana, Grape, Blue Raspberry & Cherry.

Root beer & Banana definitely my favorites.  I don't understand the toxic waste dump raspberry, but I keep buying the pack for the others.

The Strawberry Crunch Bar .. they make a few different kinds .. the best one had more golden crunchies on the outside with strawberry surrounded by ice cream on the inside .. the cheaper kind was overly pink crunchies and too much pink inside very little ice cream .. pictures of both on yahoo doing "stawberry crunch bar" image search

Fun subject. I was at my local food market today, and bought some blue rasperry popsicles. They also had banana. In talking with one of the workers at the check-out, I asked her what flavors she remembered.( I am 50, she is probably 60) She distinctly remembers pineapple flavored( I do too-loved them) and she said when she was young, there was a 7 UP flavor....

Well, since we seem to be talking generically, and not about the trademarked brand, I will give my memory from the mid-60's: Good Humor Tiger Stripes. For years, I thought it was a rootbeer ice pop, but root beer ices I have had are not quite the same. Then, a few years back, I found what was missing: it was not just a root beer ice pop; the stripes of brown and orange were root beer and orange ices. Still never tasted anything like it (although A&W serves a drink with those flavors, and you can always add some orange juice to root beer).

Yes.   Red cherry Orange orange Green lime Brown root beer and Purple grape.   I did not care for the banana seemed artificial, even if I didn't know the word.  Cost a nickel, and I had to share half with by brother, which is hard to split the sticks sometimes with small fingers.  When it broke top and bottom, I gave him the short half or no sticks usually.   But we always did every other time who chooses the flavor.  Root beer was my personal fave, followed by any color that made your tongue or your bare belly turn color.   Then we would rinse our sticky fingers in the wading pool in the back yard or run under a hose.   The corner store was only a block and half away and sometimes a round trip could take an hour.  My mom wasn't concerned in the least how long we were gone, probably glad to get rid of us actually.  Now, I wouldn't let my kids out the back yard alone.

Wow...I thought I was the only person to remember vanilla popsicles. Yes, they had those and the root beer. I would break them both in half and eat a half of each together. That way...I could have it twice !!  And it was always very hard to get a vanilla one. I don't know if they sold out of those 1st, or they just didn't order as many to have in stock. Or maybe the store owner and his family ate all of those up before they made it out to the store ?

Think I remember the cream soda ones too. Oh yes...and the pineapple was great too. I haven't kept up with the new flavors they have today. I want to go back !!
I remember the banana yummy fudgsicle type too.

I never had a Popsicle in the early years. It was always Hershey's single ice pops from the corner store...in root beer. I remember some ice pop in cola. I don't know if it was Hershey's.

The biggest challenge was when purchasing a Hershey's single-serve ice cream cup. I had to try & fish around for the little individually-wrapped wooden sticks that could be anywhere...to eat it...while not falling in to the big giant freezer case.

Rootbeer and Banana were my two favorites.

Walmart's "Great Value" pops have a banaba flavor, but are nowhere near as flavorful as the "old school" ones.

I liked root beer and banana too.  Never had vanilla.  Now I get them at Giant Eagle (supermarket) and I get the box of cherry/orange/grape.  Never without popsicles in the freezer........refreshing after a 2-3 mile power walk on a hot humid day!!
