Lums Hot Dogs Extinct? - Fri, 07/8/05 5:45 PM
Are there any Lums Restaurants still around? They were quite popular in the 60s and 70s with their hot dogs cooked in beer. They also were early to feature many imported beers which was a bit of an oddity in those days.

Lums was a magnet for college students. One could be oh so sophisticated dining on these "gourmet dogs" and pontificating on the merits of the imported beers.

What are your memories of Lums and are there any still around?

Check under topic of "long-gone regional chains" for several earlier posts on Lums. As far as I can tell from the previous posts the only remaining Lums is in Davie, FL near Ft Lauderdale. The guy who owns it was one of the original Lums franchises and he believes he may be the last one. One of our RF-ers even called him to try to see if he would divulge some of the original receipes. Owner was quite willing to talk and seemed really proud of the fact he'd stuck it out.
You may remember that they also had the Ollie burger which was quite big and packed w/ "secret" spices. You can still find the burger at some Ollie's Trolleys around a few cities (DC area being one I know of).

I am visiting my daughter in Bellevue, NE (a suburb of Omaha) and there is a Lum's on N. Fort Crook Road. I haven't seen one for years and wanted to get a menu - came across this post and wanted to add this location for Lum's fans.

Lum's didn't need hot dogs since they purchased Caesar's Palace for $60 million.

That's a lot of hot dogs!

Those that bought stock in Lum's back in the 60's and still have it are doing quite nicely.

I also am trying to locate any memorabilia from Lums Restaurant to add to a memory book I am making for my husband's birthday. When we were dating back in the 70's, we used to eat at Lums in Rocky Mount, NC. I would dearly love to have a menu or anything that has their logo on it.

I was wondering if QFan might be able to provide with me a little more information on the location of the one in Ft. Lauderdale so I could give them a call.

If anyone out there knows where I might be able to find something from Lums, I would be eternally grateful!!

Thanks,

JoRose

Sad to say -- when I tried to call their # a few weeks ago, I received a "This # is no longer in service" message.

Here was their breakfast menu:

Good luck.

Lum's was in Gatlinburg, TN for several years and I certainly enjoyed their dogs steamed in beer.

They were good but they are gone.

I was wondering if anyone out there has anything from an old Lum's Restaurant they would be willing to part with such as a napkin, straw, menu, glass, matches? I would be willing to pay and am not asking for anything free. If not, would anyone have any suggestions how I might go about locating something? I have searched e-bay but haven't found anything there so far.

Any information and/or help will be greatly appreciated.

JoRose, just got back from vacation and only just now picked up your post. The Lums in question is in a town due west from Ft Lauderdale on I-595. Go to the University exit and then go south toward the Nova Southeastern campus. Don't remember the cross street to look for, but it's a ways from where you get off the expressway. Also you can go to City Search or Mapquest and map it. If you manage to get there you have to promise to post your tasting notes on RF so the rest of us can vicariously remember those steamed dogs or Ollie burgers plus frosty mugs of root beer. Best of luck!

I admit I was curious. I was just reminiscing on another forum about Lum's before I hit this. Must be a generation gap cuz my Lum's didn't have wraps. Living away from the NE area must have time-warped me. However thru college a Lum's and a beer was the perfect end to a day of scholastic endeavors/avoidance.

I could never really taste the beer, but liked the idea of it...and wondered if the alcohol really burned off?

Lum's ...WoW! I used to work @ Orange Motors Ford in Albany NY (60's/70's)and there was a Lum's across the street. At lunch we would go and have a couple of Dogs and a pitcher of beer. Great stuff. Sure would like to be able to have those dogs again.
When I went back there in the 80's, that Lum's was gone and up the road there was a Lum's and it was sort of like a Denny's...No,(good)hot dogs.

Lum's is still open in Plattsburgh, NY right near Exit 37 off I-87. It's too not bad, we go there once in a while. They still have some of the "traditional" Lum's menu items.

Wally
Still open in Plattsburgh too!

P.S. The comment "it's not too bad" coming from a local such as myself is more of a postive comment than you might otherwise expect. Sorry bout that, its part of my heritage I guess.

You know, I'm not completely sure. I haven't been there since early last summer. I think they might still do that. Maybe if I have a chance tomorrow, I'll stop there ask ask to see a menu.

One on Commercial Blvd. near Floranada elementary school; one near the corner of Oakland and Federal. I don't remember when they closed, just that we went there.

Oakland and Federal? Where? I remember one up around Atlantic and US1. Or was it Sample Road? Somewhere up there. But I grew up behind Coral Ridge mall. I can't recall a Lums there.

I just hung up the phone with a Lum's Restaurant. They still serve the Ollie Burger and Hot Dogs steamed in beer. The address is 4125 SW 64th Ave. Davie, FL. The phone is (954)583-7872.

We use to have a Lum's on Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga, NY in the late 1960's. The manager of the place was a former Buffalo Bill, Tom Day. We use to purchase the Lum's hot dog basket along with a pitcher of beer during my college days. I loved the sauerkraut on the steam hot dogs in beer!

The entire Buffalo, NY area at the time had 4 Lums restaurants but sadly to say, they vanished by the early 1970's. I always wondered what kind of hot dogs they steam in beer back then. Does anyone know of the brand utilized?

My guess would be that they got their hotdogs through Dirr Gold Seal Meats.

I have come across Lum's in:
Newark, DE
Elmira, NY

I checked the online phone directories and both are still listed.

There is also a chain of fast food restaurants called Ollie's Trolley, which the sell the Ollie Burger (but no hotdogs steamed in beer. I've run across those in:
Cincinnati, OH (and Covington, KY)
Washington, DC (and Arlington, VA)

I went to high school in the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC in the late 60's. My best friend and I used to go to Lums after playing basketball to have a frosty mug of apple cider. Onion rings and roast beef sandwiches were also memorable menu items. I hope to go to the Lums in Florida sometime in the next few years and see whether they still have the "right stuff". Great memories.

I remember LUM's from the late '60 to sometime in the 70's! The one I remember specifically was located in Saugus MA on US 1 - known unofficially as "Restaurant Strip".

My dad liked going there, and so did I, though I remember thinking LUMS was a strange name (I was about 4)

There was a Lums just outside the gate at Ft. Benjamin Harrison near Indianapolis in Lawrence, IN off Post Road in early 70s. I was at an Army school there and we got [exactly] one hour for lunch. They had a small, private dining room with a television that they held for 3 or 4 of us. We'd call in our lunch orders during the mid-morning cigarette break and race over at noon to watch/play Jeopardy. Always hated to have to leave before Final Jeopardy. There was also a Lums north of Hartford here in Connecticut but it's long gone. I think Lums also operated under another name in other parts of country. Does anyone remember that?

Sure do miss Lums. Michael J., you're one lucky dude! Try on Fort Bragg, during the Vietnam fight. I was there. Unfortunately, no Lums outside the gate. Just PX nickel beer, it went down well!

I worked for Lums in Belleve, Nebraska for five years starting in 1976............I met my first love there and the memories are fantastic!! I have a Lum's beer mug and a menu somewhere. The Chop Steak dinner was $1.95. An 8 oz hamburger patty topped with onions and green peppers and mushrooms. Baked potato. Garlic Bread and a salad!!!

The Lum's in Bellevue has not been updated so when you go in it still has the fake brown beams on the ceiling. Red carpet. The Ollie Burger is not real. The menus are now paper. It seems more like a mom and pop restaurant.........The reason the hot dogs were steamed in beer is because the steamer was right below the tap for the beer. When we would pour a beer and it had too much head on it we would toss the foam into the hotdogs.............

I believe that the national Lum's organization was bought by Wienerwald back in the 1970s. Perhaps some of them went by that name for a while?

I remember getting hotdogs steamed in beer at the original Lums in Miami back in the late 1950s. I can't remember the name of the street, but it was just across from a Tropicana plant, and within walking distance of Bayfront Park where I worked on a charter boat. It was a small place with a counter and a few tables. I used to get a couple of hotdogs and a glass of beer.

There was one located on the other end of the block from the original location of the Elbow Room in Fort Lauderdale in the mid-70's. Had a few there myself.

The last Lum's I remember was when I lived in Vero Beach, FL, in 1970.

On a drive back to Miami from Daytona Beach, I made a detour and stopped at Lum's, in Davie. I had never been there before, but I have eaten at several now-extinct Lum's restaurants in the Miami area over the years. The manager told me that the Davie restaurant and one in Plattsburgh, NY are the only two left.

DAVIE, FL LUMS:

LUMS Entry Area:

As you can see, they still prominently announce the availability of Ollie Burgers and hot dogs steamed in beer. I was not really hungry, but I ordered a hot dog. This is what I got:

LUMS HOT DOG:

Pretty sorry looking, eh? A flimsy roll, disintegrating before I had even touched it, and a pale, bland dog. What a disappointment. I cannot recommend even bothering to go for the hot dog if you are a mile away. I had hoped that it would be more like the one in the Roadfood.com review, http://roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=4195

This is the photo from the review:

That looks MUCH better to me.

Sosmeone should have their butt kicked for allowing that Lum's dog to be served looking like that.

Big Lum's fan here, particularly Ollieburgers. I visited one in Hamilton, OH (on Dixie Highway...the building is now a used car lot) on a regular basis in the mid-70s while a college student at nearby Miami University. After that one closed, I kept track of where the nearest one was - until there weren't any more of them - so I could get my Ollieburger fix. In succession, I "closed" Lum's stores in Cincinnati's Western Hills (Glenway Ave.), Dayton, OH, Fairborn, OH, and Columbus (across from Ohio State campus) over the next decade.

We also had an Ollie's Trolley in downtown Cincinnati, which I followed from a location on Court Street (in the 1970s), to Sixth Street (in the '80s) to its current location on Liberty Street at Central Avenue. The last move involved a change of ownership, and the quality has suffered a bit with that change. You can still get a reasonable imitation of the original Ollieburger there, but it isn't as good as they used to be. The seasoning seems accurate, but the meat quality isn't there. It was (and still is) in an actual trolley, not a storefront.

There are, I believe, two other Trolley locations surviving, although they are in storefronts, not trolleys: Louisville, KY and Washington, DC. I haven't tried either one, so I can't verify their authenticity.

I worked at the Lums Restaurant in Horseheads, NY for 14 years.  Sadly, we closed our doors on Dec 4, 2004.  Too many other restaurants in the area popping up. Back when the restaurant first opened, they did steam the dogs in beer.   We did our lumdogs on the grill but would always honor special request to steam in beer.  We also had one of the best fish frys in town and would do beer batter on request.  During our last week, we had people stopping by to get their last Ollieburger.  We would always have travelers coming in who had been frequented a Lums restaurant in their youth and most would ask for a frosted mug of draft beer-which we always had!!  I see my old customers around town from time to time and they always tell me how much they miss Lums.  Not only for the food but for all the friends that were made.  Ahhhh...........good times.  If anyone reads this who frequented or worked at the Lums in Horseheads, NY, please write back!!! ps  my username is Lumdog because that's what my husband used to call me when I worked there.  I am now an RN and love my job but there will always be a special place in my heart for my time at Lums.  There are days I would go back there in a heartbeat if it was still there.  (I was a waitress)  We are near Watkins Glen which is famous for NASCAR races and we always braced ourselves for race week.  We would be so busy with drivers and pit crews.  Some of the most memorable visits for dinner included Richard Petty, Geoff  and Todd Bodine (who are from our area), and Jeff Gordon.  Just a little tid bit for you race fans.

My dad was Air Force and was stationed at Hurlburt Field from 1967 to 1969.  We used to eat at Lums a lot, and when he retired to Montgomery, Alabama, we'd spend a week or two every year in Ft. Walton.  We always ate at Lums at least twice while down there.  Their food was really good, including the beer-steamed hot dogs, but the thing I loved most was their french fries.  They sprinkled some kind of seasoning on top of them that made them just delicious.  I wish I knew what that seasoning was.  We've never found any fries since that are as tasty as Lums' fries were.

All along the Gulf Coast, many restaurants sprinkle Cajun Seasoning on fries. Hopefully, some ex-Lums employee will see this and tell us what the seasoning was.

Ollieburgers and Ollie fries had proprietary seasoning and sauce packets that were purchased from the company by franchisees, pre-packaged so the secret wouldn't be revealed publicly.  I don't know if that secret ever got out - it may have - but I doubt that an employee at a store could tell you the recipe.
