Maybe I'm just on a bad losing streak or it's a regional thing but lately I find plain, ordinary real french fries are becoming a thing of the past. First there were these "flavored/seasoned" fries popping up everywhere and I started ASKING for "plain french fries". (Did this start with Burger King or did they just jump on a bandwagon?)
Now, there's these "things" showing up, even at somewhat upscale places where I previously had real fries (latest example was the $14 lunch serving of fish & chips at the Triumph Brewpub in Princeton, NJ but it's happened at two different places before that, even when I've asked for "plain" french fries) that are "batter-dipped/coated" or some other term I've forgotten in my anger and amazement. Sure, whatever they do to them makes them "crisp" but they are rather flavorless, crispy nothings. No potato flavor.
Did the simply french fried potato really need "improvement"?
