I'm sorry I missed this one!

Interview with soup man doesn't go down well

Friday, January 20th, 2006

WNYW/Ch. 5's Anne Craig had her hands full Wednesday while broadcasting live from the new soup shop owned by Al Yeganeh, who inspired "Seinfeld's" Soup Nazi character.

The "Good Day New York" interview, if we can call it that, ended with the soup seller calling Craig some ugly words.

Yeganeh, known as much for his gruff personality as his lobster bisque, got brusque with Craig when she ventured behind the counter.

"You should know you can't touch this food," he said.

From there, it went downhill.

In Yeganeh's defense, Craig also looked like she was trying to stir the controversy pot.

"Did someone wake up on the wrong side of the soup bowl this morning?" she asked him.

Later, she uttered the words "Soup Nazi," which brought the already simmering soup man to a full boil.

"I'm going to be rude to you because you have no brains, lady," he told Craig. "You stupid, idiot b-."

Craig turned to the camera and covered her mouth, while Yeganeh continued to blow. Though the audio wasn't heard, it was clear he used the F-word.

Now Craig fan Erwin Michael Green wants people to boycott the soup shop.

"I was so appalled at how someone could be so callous and rude to not just anyone but to someone who is a professional and classy individual and also a woman," he explained in an E-mail.

While the incident created a few moments of exciting TV, one can't help but wonder if Craig didn't help escalate a bad situation. And, if it was clear the segment was going south, fast, why keep going back live?

Just asking.

After the famous Seinfield episode, I'm not sure I would recognize the "real" soup Nazi, Al Yaganeh. But this must have hilarious to watch. Sounds like Al made it a point to stay in character. What a great promotional idea. Now half the people will come for the soup, and the other half will come for the "show". He just doubled his customer base.

While I am a big fan of the notion that no press is bad press, I think that when she used the phrase "Soup Nazi," there was genuine unhappiness. If I am not mistaken, the guy is Jewish. He has made it clear in every way possible that the word "Nazi" is not to be used by interviewers, and with good reason. I am thinking that it just might be the most derogatory thing you can call a white man.

There may well be something to say about the guy having an "act," but remember, he was like this BEFORE Seinfeld made him famous outside of NYC.

There was a screen capture of him with the article.

I have eaten at his place and Nazi is much too nice a term for this nut case. His soup is to die for and he is a bowl of nuts,

Remember, there is no such thing as bad publicity. Seinfeld has legs like no other show in recent memory. This guy is going to make an absolute fortune just on tourists alone. His soup really was delicious (and overpriced) at the old dump. This spiffy new place should compete nicely with the other insanely overpriced soup joints in midtown like "Hale and Hearty" and "Devon and Blakely".

Two things...He is a nut case and a GREAT soup chef.

When in the city we mess w/ him just to watch him go off. Be slow w/ the money, ask for a different bread ( soup nazi freaks over this for some reason), be slow in line, and make small talk w/ the next person in line. I know it is baiting the lion but it is just too much fun to not do it.

I love doing it which makes me a bad person who will be sent to the lower regions w/ no electric fan but it is SO much fun. Really want to tick him off? Ask if the soup comes from a mix.

1. How does this relate to the soup nazi guy?
2. Are you sure Picasso was never called an asshole? I bet he was, many times, particularly by ultra conservative purists in the art community, and even more times by the women he treated so terribly. I recommend Portrait of Picasso as a Young Man by Norman Mailer for some perspective.

I think that it relates to the Soup Nazi, because he is a talented artist, but his canvas just happens to be a large pot. He has been condemned as a Ahole, but as he is a genius in his own right, should his attitude be overlooked.

This guy is toast or a much better actor than anyone on the left coast. I've eaten there many times and he is always in need of medication. God gives and takes away, this guy is a fantastic soup chef but is as nutty as fruitcake. Put up w/ his crap and enjoy the soup.

I won't be eating his market soup as w/o his crazy crap it's just not the same. Got to have his nuts behavior to truely love the soup.
